Eileen Marjorie Cross

Mrs. Eileen Marjorie Cross of Calgary, passed away at her residence on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the age of 92 years.

Eileen was born Thursday, July 16, 1908 in Calgary and lived in the area most of her life. Eileen and Jim married in 1930; she was always a great support to Jim in all of his endeavors, such as the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company, ranching in the Southern Alberta Foothills, Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and the Calgary Polo Club. Together they spent some 40 winters in Santa Barbara, California, where they enjoyed golf and polo.

Eileen will be lovingly remembered by her children, her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Shan Cross of Okotoks and daughter and son-in-law Nan and Hugh Morrison of Priddis. She will be dearly missed by her eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Patterson of Calgary. Eileen was predeceased by her beloved husband Jim Cross in 1990.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Calgary Health Trust, 1035 - 7 Ave. S.W., Calgary, Alberta T2P 3E9.

In living memory of Eileen Cross, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, “Park Memorial Chapel”, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Telephone (403) 243-8200.

Alice Louise Sandeman

Alice “Louise” Sandeman, formally of Turner Valley, passed away on January 15, 2001, in Calgary at the age of 84 years.

Louise is survived by her children, Barb (Mel) Iceton, Dave (Deena) and granddaughter Cheyenne. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert in 1988 and brother, George in 1982.

Memorial service was held at 2 pm on Friday, January 19, 2001 at St. George’s Anglican Church, Turner Valley, AB with Rev. Robert Griffin officiating. Interment followed in the Foothills Cemetery, Black Diamond.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Louise’s memory to the St. George’s Anglican Church, Box 687, Black Diamond, AB. T0L 0H0, or to the charity of one’s choice. Snodgrass Funeral Home (Okotoks) Ltd. 938-3111.

Lloyd Sinclair

Lloyd Sinclair, aged 79 years of Claresholm, Alberta and formerly of Black Diamond, Alberta passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2001.

Lloyd is survived by his three brothers and their wives Earl and Beryl Sinclair, Courtney, BC, Roy and Sylvia Sinclair, Victoria, BC and George and Jean Sinclair, Fort Macleod, AB, one sister and her husband Joyce and Ken Price, Millet, AB as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Merton Edward Francis Biswanger

Mr. Merton Edward Francis Biswanger, of DeWinton, beloved husband to Mae Biswanger, passed away at the High River Hospital on February 10, 2001 at the age of 75 years. Besides his loving wife Mae, Mert is survived by his brother Harold Biswanger of Okotoks, sisters, Reta (Don) Reynold of Three Hills, Joan (Johnny) Petrashuyk of DeWinton, Marilyn (Donnie) Miller of Calgary. His step-daughter Bertha (Tom) Armstrong of Sarnia, Ont. His uncle William Aldridge of Okotoks, grandchildren, Erin and Brian Biswanger of Whitehorse, Yukon. Mert will also be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews from Nova Scotia, California, Ontario and Alberta. He was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Lillian Biswanger, son Rick Biswanger in 1998 and sister Olive Stoner in 2000. Mert was born on June 20, 1925 in Calgary and attended school there. In 1942, he joined the Navy and went to Halifax where he met and married Mae Josey in 1945. After returning home, Mert worked as a painter/decorator for the Calgary Stampede Board. He then became the Calgary Stampede grounds manager until his retirement in 1990 to the farm near DeWinton.

A funeral service was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, Okotoks, on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at 1 pm. The Rev. Doug Powell of the Okotoks United Church officiating. Interment followed at Okotoks Union Cemetery. If desired, in memory of Mert, memorial contributions may be made to the Stars Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Box 570, Calgary, T2E 8M7. Arrangements in care of Snodgrass Funeral Home (Okotoks) Ltd. Telephone: 938-3111.

Gordon James (Gord) Stewart

Gordon James (Gord) Stewart, beloved husband of Ilona of Okotoks, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Monday, February 5, 2001, at the age of 55 years.

Gordon was born on July 2, 1945. He is survived by his wife Ilona, a son Darin, daughter Tracey, and sister Carol Anderson and family.

'Pat' Harold Patrick Mchugh

Mr. 'Pat' Harold Patrick McHugh of DeWinton passed away at the High River Hospital, on February 8, 2001 at the age of 66 years. Pat was born November 14, 1934 and was raised on the family farm in the Davisburg area. Pat followed the rodeo circuit with Canadian titles to his credit in wild horse racing and wild cow milking. With his flamboyant red hair and his firm handshake, he will always be remembered for lending a helping hand going down the road.

Pat is survived by two brothers Jack and Douglas of DeWinton, sister Virginia Klatzel of Calgary, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Pat was predeceased by his father, Frank, in 1957 and his mother, Mary Jane, in 1996.

Funeral service was held at the Snodgrass Funeral Chapel Okotoks, on Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at 2 pm. Interment followed in the Davisburg Cemetery.

Memorial tributes may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer 1331 - 29 St. N.W. Calgary, Ab. T2N 4N2. Arrangements in care of Snodgrass Funeral Home (Okotoks) Ltd. Phone 938-3111.

Mabel C. Norris

Mabel C. Norris was born August 21, 1914 in Loveland, Alberta, into a family of five sisters and six brothers. She grew up in the Halkirk area and married January 11, 1934 to Jim Norris. She moved to Turner VAlley in 1937, after her husband had come down earlier to work in the oil patch. She worked in the boarding house and at the local restaurant, she was a great cook, owing a lot of her knowledge to working for the Threshing crews in the local farming area.

However, her greatest work came as a seamstress, she could sew anything from a coat to a wedding dress, and it was always done with care and perfection. In 1962, Mabel moved into Calgary to work as a cook at St. Mary’s rectory for Monsignor Smith and Father Past O’Byrne and also Bishop Waldheim, St. Anthony’s and the Brazilian Fathers. Later she would work as a cook for the Zeta Psi Fraternity until 1972 when she became my babysitter until retirement.

Mabel loved the thoroughbred races and was an active spectator and also at one time a race horse owner on the Alberta Thoroughbred Racing Circuit. Above all, Mabel had a good heart and always showed concern for her family and friends. She was the one who was always there when someone was sick or for their family in time of need. In her twilight years, she suffered terrible with Osteoporosis and also had a stroke in 1999, which affected her short-term memory. She moved back to this area in April, 1999 for more active care. Her last several months were filled with pain and discomfort. She was stricken with pneumonia on February 3 and although she put up a good fight and actually showed some signs of improvement by the Thursday, she passed away on Friday, February 9.

She is survived by her daughter Pat and son-in-law Howard, her grandson Dean, her sisters Florence, Calgary, Dorothy, Perth, Ont and Lucy, Renfrew, Ont.

She was predeceased by her daughter Marni, husband Jim and by two sisters and six brothers.

Evening Prayers were said at Snodgrass Funeral Home, High River on February 14, 2001 at 7 pm. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Black Diamond on Thursday, February 15 at 11 am. The Reverend Father James Hagel, Celebrant. An interment service followed at the Okotoks Roman Catholic Cemetery. Arrangement in care of Snodgrass Funeral Home, High River (652-2222).

Gary Gavol

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gary Gavol, of High River, announce his passing after a though battle with a brain tumor.

Gary left us on the morning of Feb. 15, 2001 at the young age of 41 years. He will be missed deeply by his wife Brenda-Lee, daughter Krystal and sons Chad and Jason and Jason’s wife Cara, Gary’s mother Sandra, sister Jennifer, brother Chris form Calgary, father Frank and his wife Helen, Rocky Mountain House, sister-in-law Marlene and husband Bert, brother-in-law Jeff and partner Shannon and many aunts and uncles as well as myriad of friends.

Gary was born in Calgary and spent most of his years in the area of Black Diamond, Turner Valley and High River where he worked in the oil and gas industry, the most recent being the Dynegy Canada (Mazeppa Gas Plant).

A kind and gentle man with a heart of gold Gary would never hesitate to help a friend in need, say a kind word, or give a big hello, Gary’s passions were camping, fly fishing and garage sales. His love for his family always came first.

In the past few years Gary had only begun to explore the world. He and Brenda took a trip across Canada to Ontario with their trailer, a trip to Las Vegas and an adventure in Mexico. His life was just beginning.

Funeral services were held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, High River on Sunday, February 18 at 2:30 pm.

Helen Irene Larsen

Mrs. Helen Irene Larsen of Cayley, Alberta passed away at High River Hospital after a lengthy illness on February 7, 2001 at the age of 69 years.

Born in New Denmark, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Christian and Hazel Rassmussen. She was a longtime resident of New Brunswick, moving to Alberta in 1993. Helen will be sadly missed by her husband of 47 years, Peter of Cayley, Alberta, son Dale, daughter-in-law Peggie, and granddaughter Samantha of High River, Alberta. Also survived by her sisters Pearl Baarup and Elva Rioux of New Denmark and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers Osborne and Clarence, two sisters Annie Weatherhead and Marion Michaud.

A memorial service was held on February 12, 2001 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, High River, Alberta. The Reverend Jeanne Forte of the Anglican Church officiated. Interment followed at High River Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Snodgrass Funeral Home Ltd., High River, Alberta.
