It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alf Battensby of Black Diamond, on October 14, 2000. Alf is survived by his loving family, son Bill of Black Diamond and his children Bill (Debbie), Teresa (Tim) and their children Jamie and Matt; son, Bob (Gail) and their daughter Karen of Armstrong, B.C.; daughter, Bonnie (John) Sutherland and their children Mike and Aimee of Penticton, B.C. as well as many friends and relatives. Alf was predeceased by his loving wife Constance Mary in 1978, granddaughter Brenda in 1973 and daughter-in-law Elaine in 1998.

Jay Alexander Paul
Jay Alexander Paul, of Aldersyde, passed away on July 3, 2000 at the age of 51 years. Jay was born at High River on March 4, 1949. He was predeceased by his father Jack Paul in 1972. He leaves to mourn his mother Dot Paul, Claresholm, his sisters Gayle McWilliam, Port Coquitlam, B.C. and Marilyn and Tom Curry, Claresholm and his brother Jack and Bonnie Paul, Medicine Hat as well as his special friend Sandra Pye, Calgary, his 'second mother' Myrt Ethel Johnstone, and his nieces: Brenda (John) Shields; Melody (Phil) McDonell and Charley (Kevin) Stokes and nephews: Tom (Diana) Sandeman; Darcy (Reeny) Sandy; Brian (Nicki) Sandy and Tyler Paul.
Jay attended school in Okotoks and Surrey, B.C., graduating from B.C.I.T. with a diploma in Building Technology. Jay's life's work was in the commercial construction industry. He worked on various projects across Canada and Nigeria, Africa. He recently teamed up with 2 friends Larry and Brian Jacobsen to form BARJAC Contracting. Jay enjoyed golfing, making wine and hosting Regattas on his duck pond. Jay took great pride in his acreage and Log home. He will be sadly missed but will be cherished in our memory.
Funeral services were held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, Okotoks on Friday, July 7 at 2 pm. Jay's cremated remains were interred beside his father at Okotoks Union Cemetery. Merle Elizabeth Shields
Mrs. Merle Elizabeth Shields, of Black Diamond, passed away at the Oilfields Hospital on April 1, 2001 at the age of 84 years.
Merle will be dearly missed by her daughters, Donna (Elton) Boggs of Wynndel, BC., and their children Glen, Shirley (Robert) Page, Tammy (Bill) Grant; Joan (Melvin) Adams of Turner Valley and their children Sharon (Derek) Oancia, David (Lori), Darcy; daughter-in-law Grace Patterson of Airdrie and her children Carol (Jay) Steele, Kevin (Sue), Brian.
Merle is also survived by 12 great grandchildren, one sister-in-law and nieces, nephew and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents Roland and Reitta Crawford, two sisters and one brother, her first husband Hugh Patterson, her second husband Vester Shields and her son Arthur Patterson.
A funeral service was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, 200 Woodgate Rd. Okotoks, on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 2 pm. The Rev. Doug Powell officiated. Interment followed at Okotoks Union Cemetery.

Ronald Charles Nutkins
Mr. Ronald Charles Nutkins of Longview, passed away at the Oilfields Hospital, Black Diamond, on April 5, 2001 at the age of 68 years. Ron is survived by his daughter Colleen (Peter) Boot of Normanwells, N.W.T. and their children Meagan, Christopher and Chelsea, and son Robert (Linda) Nutkins of Penticton, B.C. and their children Brandy and Darryl. Ron is predeceased by his wife Marilyn Verne Nutkins on May 25, 1991.
As a young man, Ron was in the airforce for five years. He then was a fireman with the Calgary Firefighters for 17 years prior to ranching in the DeWinton area.
A memorial service was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, 200 Woodgate Rd. Okotoks, on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 2 pm, Pastor Art Siemens officiated. William (Bill) Nitschky
Mr. William (Bill) Nitschky passed away peacefully in hospital on April 10, 2001 in his 98th year. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Edith who passed away 10 very long years ago. He will be lovingly remembered by his son George and family in Ottawa, including daughter-in-law Peggy, grandchildren Linda, Gary (Salt Spring Island, B.C.), Geordie and Stephen (Sheila) and great grandchildren Paddy, Aleisha and Ryan. He will also be fondly remembered by nieces and their families in Denmark.
To maintain the privacy and independence that he exhibited in life, Bill requested no visitation or service. A very sincere thank you to Dr. Cunning and all staff members at the Rising Sun Extended Care wing at the Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond, for their dedicated, attentive care and the many kindnesses they showed Bill over the years and in his final days. Elton Russell Wight
Elton Russell Wight of Cherhill, Alberta passed away suddenly at his residence on April 23, 2001 at the age of 62 years. He is survived by his mother Louise Wight, High River; his brothers Clarke (Nita), Calgary, Wallace, Brisbane, Australia, David (Kathie), Longview, Neil (Karen), Longview and by many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Gwen Frazer, Calgary and her family Herb Frazer, Ken Frazer and their families, Wendy Somers and her family David, Michelle and Kisik, Josh and Katie. Russell was predeceased by his father Vernon Wight on February 23, 1986.
Russell was born at High River on April 5, 1939 and received his schooling at Longview and Turner Valley. He worked on farms, pipelines and sawmills before purchasing his own farm at Cherhill in the 1970’s.
A funeral service was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, High River on Saturday, April 28 at 2 pm. The Reverend Susan Lukey officiated. Alvina Ohlhauser
Alvina Ohlhauser of Turner Valley, Alberta passed away at the Oilfields Hospital May 8, 2001 at the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her son Cody (Joanne) of Turner Valley. Alvina is also survived by her sisters Lily of Trochu, Alberta, Gertie, Medicine Hat, Alberta; Violet, Brooks, Alberta and Erna, Columbia City, Washington. She was predeceased by her husband Leo in 1993.
Alvina was born in Odessa Russia July 12, 1912. At the age of one year, she immigrated along with her family to North Dakota, U.S.A. In the early twenties, she moved to Carbon, Alberta. She married Leo Ohlhauser in 1940 and pursued a busy career as a ranch wife. A pleasant memory her many friends will remember is Alvina singing and working away in her garden.

Viola Marie Knisley
Viola Marie Knisley (nee Doern), passed away peacefully at High River Hospital on Sunday, May 13, 2001 at the age of 88 years. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 16, 1912. She lived most of her life in Morden, Darlingford, Holland, Cypress River and Russell, Manitoba before moving to White Rock B.C. and then to Okotoks, Alberta.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur and son Raymond. She leaves behind her daughter Marilyn (Bob) McGowan, daughter-in-law Joan Knisley, five grandchildren, Doug (Donata) McGowan, Kirsty (Tom) Oldham, Dana (Gord) Hay, Lisa and Tricia Knisley as well as 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Marge Pattle, Rena Collins and Willa Garty.

Edna Florence Scott
Edna Florence Scott, of Gladys Ridge, passed away peacefully at the High River Hospital on May 25, 2001 at the age of 88 years. She is the loving mother of June (Anderberg) of Kamloops, B.C., Graham E. (Shirley), Calgary, Frank R. and Allan R. both of Gladys Ridge. Edna is also survived by her daughter-in-law Lynn of Calgary, 10 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford T. in March of 1974 and by her son William George in September of 1979. Edna was born in Ontario on May 19, 1913 and moved to Alberta in 1948. She lived in Calgary until 1972 when she moved to Gladys Ridge.
The family extends their thanks to all the staff of the High River Hospital for her care during the past year. At the family’s request, there will be no funeral service. Cremation will be followed by a private family graveside service at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. James Forbes Graham
James Forbes Graham passed away May 27, 2001 at his home at Carewest Sarcee in Calgary at the age of 88 years.
Jim was born March 25, 1913 in Cahir, Tipperary, Ireland, the third child of George and Maude Johanna Graham. He moved to Edmonton in 1927 with his family. In 1939 he married Maxine Adele Crozier in Edmonton. Jim joined the Air Force in 1943. After completing his service with the Air Force, he joined Imperial Oil Limited for a successful thirty-three year career.
Jim loved hunting, fishing and travelling in the great outdoors. For his excellent wildlife conservation work in the Okotoks area with the Okotoks Fish and Game Association, Jim Graham Provincial Park was named in his honour.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Jim is survived by his three children, Pat Zorn (Carl), Jim Graham Jr. (Brenda), and Colleen Thurgood (Brian); his sister Betty Robinson (Harry); his grandchildren, Randy Zorn (Vicki), Michael Zorn (Helen), Laura Ashmore, Trish Truant (Dean), Michelle Goemans (Eric), Scott Graham (Amy) and Andrea and Elise Thurgood, and his great-grandchildren, David, Nathan, Rene’ Zorn and Maxx Truant. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Maxine.
Jim was a very social person and always loved people around him.

Kelvin Craig
Mr. Kelvin Craig of Okotoks, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Rockyview Hospital on May 27, 2001, at the age of 69 years.
Kelvin is dearly loved by his wife of 31 years Rhona; his children Kelly of Calgary and David of Okotoks; one granddaughter MacKenzie Marie; one sister Shirley Browne of Calgary; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Glenda (Rod) Zohner of Edmonton; nieces and nephews, Lynn Murray of Calgary, Richard Stewart of Rocky Mountain House, Lori O’Connell of Texas, Karen (Steve) Verdi and family of Calgary, Robyn (Will) Steed and family of Vancouver, Sandi (Tony) Mercir and family of Edmonton, Kerri (Blayne) Kutyn and family of Edmonton, Jodi (Bill) Morris of Edmonton as well as three aunts.
Kelvin is also survived by six very special dear friends, Beverley Ford of Calgary, Allen and Ruth Menard of Calgary, Brian Huth of Aldersyde, Jean and Art Collins of Okotoks. Kelvin was predeceased by his parents Richard and Lavina, and sister Joyce Stewart.
Kelvin was a true Calgarian born and raised. He had a great love of the outdoors. He will be dearly missed by the many friends that knew him.

Richard Gevers
Richard Gevers of Calgary, formerly of Okotoks, passed away at the Signal Pointe Care Centre on May 24th, 2001 at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his daughters Joan (Adrian) Van Esch and Sadie Vissers all of Calgary; his son Henry Gevers, Claresholm and by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Anneke Tip of the Netherlands. Richard was predeceased by his wife Grietje on October 27th, 1991, grandson Peter Vissers.
Richard was born at Wolvega Netherlands on January 29th, 1912 and emigrated to Calgary in 1953. He moved to the DeWinton-Okotoks area and was employed as a custodian with the Foothills School Division.
Evening Prayers were said at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Okotoks on Monday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Okotoks on Tuesday, May 29th at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Father John Bastigal Celebrant.
