DEMPSTER, Robert Donald
May 8, 1935 — December 16, 2011

On December 16th, 2011, Robert Dempster passed away quietly with his family at his side.
Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marlene; daughter Susan (David) Hayashi, grandchildren: Robert Hayashi, Rebecca Hayashi, Melissa Gee, Michelle Gee, and sister Joanne Beiler.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 10025 — 105 Street Edmonton, AB.
Sincere thanks to extended family and friends who have supported us though this difficult time. Thank you to the Cross Cancer Institute and Norwood Hospital for the wonderful care Bob received. DEGEN, Susan (nee Semeniuk)

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Susan Degen, who left us quietly in her sleep on December 26, 2011, at the age of 48.
Susan is survived by her loving husband, Aaron Copeland, her sister Donna Semeniuk and brother Ed Semeniuk, all of Edmonton, Alberta. Susan also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins along with several extended family members and friends. Susan was predeceased by her mother Jeanette Semeniuk and her father Edwin Semeniuk.
Born on November 24, 1963, Susan spent her entire life enjoying the city of Edmonton. She will be fondly remembered for her sweet personality, child-like innocence and for her love and compassion for animals and the joy they gave her. She made friends easily with her inquisitive nature and magnetic personality — once you became Susan’s friend, you were friends for life. Susan also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, catching up with the people she was close to, and collecting candy.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Susan’s life on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Serenity Funeral Service, 10129 Princess Elizabeth Avenue, Edmonton, AB.

HAZLEWOOD, Evelyn

On December 16, 2011 Evelyn Hazlewood passed away peacefully at the age of 75 after a battle with Cancer.
She is survived by her husband Donald of 53 years; her mother Ruth Bergquist; sister Anna (Ken) Cook of Birch Bay, WA; her children Linda (John) Randolph and Robert (Cathy); grandchildren, Christina (Herbert) Godden, Jennifer Randolph, Christopher Hazlewood, Robert and Tim (Janelle) Wood; great-granddaughter Quincey; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her father Edvin, brother Gerald and nephew David Bergquist. Evelyn was a lifetime member of Skandia Lodge #549.
A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dutch Canadian Club, Nordic Room, 13312 — 142 Street, Edmonton, AB. A private family interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family would like to thank the caring staff of unit 5A2 at the University of Alberta Hospital.

WHILLIER, Oda

Oda Whillier passed away at the Grey Nuns Hospital at 7:40 p.m. on December 19, 2011.
Oda is survived by her loving husband, David, and her two sons: Randolph and Dexter, her daughters-in-law and five grandchildren.
A time for family and friends to pay their respects will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Service, Edmonton South, 5311 — 91 Street. A Celebration of Oda’s life will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Capilano Hall, 10810 — 54 Street, Edmonton.

WERBISKI, Mary Jean
(1907 — 2011)

On December 20, 2011, at the age of 104 years, your work on the earth was done, Baba. Now you are at rest, in the presence of your Lord and Saviour.
Lovingly remembered by one son, Albert (Lillian); ten Grandchildren: Douglas, Grant, Shannon, Janet, Sharmon, Pamela, Timothy, Marilyn, Patricia, and Daniel, the first generation of blueberry pyrogy-eaters; and ‘SuperGrandma’ to 16 great-grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Peter in 1984, daughters Zella and Leona, and infant sons, Paul and Edward.
A Viewing will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Service, 5311 — 91 Street. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Abbotsford, BC at Woodlawn Funeral Home, followed by Interment at Hazelwood Cemetery.
As a child, Mary could not continue in school because she had no shoes, nonetheless, was always creating with her hands and never missed an opportunity to study and learn — all lifelong, staying connected with current affairs, and even voting in the last election. Mary had particular concern for the welfare of orphans, thus Memorial donations in Mary’s Memory, may be made to an orphanage of your choice.

LANKOFF, Frieda Linda

Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Mrs. Frieda Lankoff of Sherwood Park passed away at the age of 66 years.
Frieda is lovingly remembered by her husband of 48 years Ed; two daughters: Elaine (Frank) Gruger and Karen (Kurt) Gorcak and two grandchildren: Jesse and Jessica. Frieda will be greatly missed by her brother Art Bittner; two sisters: Rose (Heinz) Frank and Helen (John) Simpson and sister– in-law Marie Bittner. She was predeceased by her parents August and Wanda Bittner and her brother Rudy.
A Celebration of Frieda’s Life will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Millwoods Community Church, 2304 — 38 Street, Edmonton with Pastor Josh Viste officiating.
If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Millwoods Community Church or the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

KOWAND, Michael
April 20, 1964 — December 21, 2011

It is with great sorrow and sadness that the family of Michael Kowand announces his passing.
Michael fought a brave and courageous battle against melanoma and we are blessed that his passing was peaceful. He is forever loved and remembered by Tatjana, his loving wife and “Angel”; his beautiful daughters Kyra and Madison; his devoted mother Gerda; loving siblings: Siegfried and Linda, Reno and Maureen, and Gabriele. He will also be greatly missed by his wonderful nephew Luke and his wife Lindsay along with his nieces Amanda (Alan, Karl and Kassey) and Sasha (Brad, Helena). He will be greatly missed by Tatjana’s family: Harry and Renate Schulz, Mark, Grant, Kim, Emma, Will, Joe and Mary Kozak. Michael was predeceased by his father Karl Kowand.
Michael has many friends scattered throughout the world and we are grateful for their love and support this past year. Many thanks to Dr. Dusang and Dr. Smylie, and all the staff at the U of A Hospital and Cross Cancer Institute, for their caring and compassion. Thank you for helping Michael on this journey.
A Celebration of his Life will take place on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 9907 — 114 Street Edmonton. We graciously decline flowers. Instead honor Michael’s memory by donating to the Cross Cancer Institute, Humane Society, or Stollery Children’s Hospital. This would be appreciated.

HINZ, Adolf

Adolf passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the age of 87.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Hilda; his children: Anita (Sig) Klar, Anneliese (Larry) Seuter, Ron (Diane) Hinz and Angelika Ramer, as well as his ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. located at Zion Baptist Church, 9802–76 Avenue in Edmonton, with Pastor Lee officiating.
Memorial donations in memory of Adolf may be made to Faith Mission Inc.

DICK, Lloyd Arthur
September 9, 1964 — December 21, 2011

It is with the deepest sadness that I announce the passing of my husband and my best– friend, the love of my life. Lloyd was a man that lived for his family. Our children, Wynne and James Thompson-Dick were the focus of his life and his pride and joy. Lloyd was a devoted community league basketball coach for twenty years, he loved watching his boys grow up.
A Service to remember him will be held December 30 at Dayspring Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Memorial Donations can be made to The Thompson-Dick Family Trust at TD Canada Trust Branch # 8244, Account # 6463972.

THOMAS, Veda Melba Lavina

On December 16, 2011, Mrs. Veda Thomas passed away at the age of 99 years.
Veda was born in Battenburg, Alberta (Gibbons area) on June 23, 1912. She lived the majority of her life in the Ritchie District working endlessly as a Mother and a volunteer. She was caring, loved life and laughter. Veda belonged to the Strathcona Legion Ladies Auxiliary for over 60 years. Veda is survived by her children: Ian, Donna Bacon, Douglas, Ashley and Ava. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo; her son, Lyle and her son-in-law, Robert Bacon. She was the last surviving child of Ben and Ida Yeo.
Cremation has taken place. Inurnment and a family gathering will be held at a later date.
Mom spent her life unselfishly helping others. In her memory, please try to do the same.

ROBB, Gene
June 22, 1947 — December 18, 2011

Gene passed away suddenly at the age of 64 in Edmonton. He is survived by his loving friends Jay and Sherry as well as a wide circle of friends.
A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Service North Chapel, 10129 Princess Elizabeth Avenue, Edmonton.
Memorial donations in memory of Gene may be made to The Stollery Children’s Hospital or to the Grey Nuns Hospital c/o Caritas Hospitals Foundation.

LYSENG, Delores Jean

On December 17, 2011, Jean Lyseng of Edmonton, AB passed away peacefully at the age of 70 years.
Jean will be sadly missed by two sons: Daryl and Perry and her daughter Gayl (Len). She is also survived by five grandchildren: Sheryl, Kara, Arianna, Katelyn and William; one brother, Norman (Deanna), and two sisters, Mildred and Alice. She was predeceased by her husband, Evereld; her parents, Martin and Kristine; two brothers, Ken and Lloyd and one sister, Lillian. We wish to especially thank Romeo Felix and Dr. Charles Butts at the Cross Cancer Hospital, the caring staff at the Palliative Care Ward at the Grey Nuns Hospital and the wonderful staff at the Norwood Hospice where Jean spent her final days.
Special thanks as well to her friends and neighbours who have been a great support to Jean and her family. Donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.
At Jean’s request, no funeral will take place, but a gathering of friends and family will take place at a later date.

PASEMCO, Maryanne
1959 — 2011

On December 20, 2011, Maryanne Pasemco passed away peacefully at the age of 52 years. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta.
She is survived by her loving parents, Lorna and Fred Pasemco, her brother, Vincent (Sandra) and children: Jana, Austin, Trevor (Roxanne) Ramaar; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Maryanne was an honour student and a talented artist. She was diagnosed with MS at the young age of 15 and more recently with cancer.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. A special thanks to the second floor staff of Allen Grey Care Centre for their tender loving care and compassion. In lieu of flowers donations may be made, if desired, to the charity of your choice, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, or the Canadian Cancer Society.

BOWEN, Winfred Wesley

Winfred passed away on December 14, 2011 at the age of 75 years.
He leaves behind his loving wife Viola Dorothy; two children: Lowell and Melaney (Vernon); five grandchildren: Saidah, Keenan, Nyota, Nya and Kailen; one brother Alfred (Roberta); five sisters: Christella, Marcella, Joyce (Kenneth), Myrna and Yvonne.
He was predeceased by both of his parents and an infant sister.
A Celebration of Winfred’s Life will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at The Park Pentecostal Church, Baseline Road and Brower Drive, Sherwood Park, AB, with Interment to follow at Glenwood Cemetery. A Viewing will be held one hour prior to the Service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canadian Diabetes Association, Suite 1010, Royal Bank Building, 10117 Jasper Avenue N.W., Edmonton, AB, T5J 1W8.

VANHILL, BERNIE (BERNARD CHESTER)

Words cannot not express our thanks to you all for your kind words, donations to the Hemochromatosis Society, food delivered to the house, flowers, cards, and sharing with us in the loss of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Bernie VanHill.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Gwenyth Dodge-VanHill, sons Collin and Chris (Lisa) and daughter Lisa (Kyle), their mother Marilyn, Baba Kay and granddaughters Vanessa and Haley, nieces Karen and Wendy and nephews Lester and Terry. Also left to mourn his passing are Gwenyth’s daughter Kate (Alan), son Neal (Kristine), and grandchildren, Brendan, Nicole (Bruce), Bennett, Miranda and Emmett.
Honorary Pallbearers: Collin VanHill, Chris VanHill, Lisa VanHill, Lester VanHill, Kate Butler and Neal Butler. Ushers: Brendan Butler, Nicole Butler, Bruce Hart and Alan Ashton. We want to thank everyone who helped our families during this very difficult time and especially Pastor Doug Hale for leading us at Bernie’s memorial, Neal for introducing the speakers and reading the many messages we received, Patricia, June and Nestor for their musical tributes, Chris, Kyle, Ginger and Lisa for the sandbox, Kristine, Neal and Alan for their many hours of editing pictures for the boards, projection and memorial folders, the ladies and management of Sandyview Farms for the delicious lunch and refreshments at the memorial, all of you who made sure we ate, ran errands, organized and helped out in so many ways, we could not have done it without you. As well, our gratitude to Morgan Construction and Environmental, Map Construction and Thompson Bros (Constr) Ltd. for their continued support of our families.
For your kindness and caring, Dr. Conrad Schulte, the doctors and staff at the Misrecordia Hospital, U of A Hospital, the Mayo Clinic and the Westview Health Centre and home care staff. To our many friends, family and colleagues who visited for coffee and conversation, “consulted” by phone, and project conference calls, and paid tribute to his never ending amazing antics and accomplishments, we all know that he has moved on to a new project now, building us the “Highway to Heaven” until we meet again.

On Tuesday December 13, 2011 Freda Thom went to be with her Lord at the age of 100 years.
Freda is predeceased by her loving husband, Al, in 1978. She is survived by her three sons, Terry (Norma), Brian (Judy), Wayne (Charmayne), grandchildren: Tammy (Peter), Jordan, Steven (Michelle), Keri-Lee (Chris), Kim (Pattrick), Luke, Emily and nine great– grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 1:00pm at Beulah Alliance Church, 17504 — 98A Avenue N.W., Edmonton, AB. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the C&MA Global Advance Fund.

1925 — 2012

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Simpson. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Alice; sons Bart (Janet) and Stacy (Bernice); daughters Cindy (Doug) Brown and Karen (Graham) Watson; and his grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Service — North Chapel, 10129 Princess Elizabeth Avenue, Edmonton.
