Harold Kingcott, beloved husband of Audrey passed away on Monday, September 8, 2003. Funeral services will be held at Delia Community Hall on Friday, September 12, 2003 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Drumheller Cancer Centre.
Clark -- Lewis Mitchell (Mickey)
Lewis Mitchell (Mickey) Clark passed away at the age of 79 years, peacefully in the hands of his family on September 10, 2003, following a valiant battle with cancer. Mickey served in the Air Force as a young man, then farmed for many years in the Hussar area. He served his community for many years coaching baseball, as a 4-H leader in the Hussar Beef Club, a municipal councillor in the County of Wheatland and later as M.L.A. for the Drumheller Constituency for eight years. He was a loving husband and father and will be sadly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Sherrill; son Neil (Jardi); grandchildren, Nevada, Tanner, Colton and Dustin whom he dearly loved and watched grow with such great pride; brother Lloyd as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Woodrow in June 1930, sisters Virginia in October 1993 and Margaret in September 2001. Interment services were held on Monday, September 15, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Bassano Cemetery. Funeral services followed at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, Hussar at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Hussar Community Hall. Hodge -- Brian 1951 - 2003
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, brother, uncle and friend, Brian Thomas Hodge, on September 10, 2003. Brian was born on August 18 of 1951, in Drumheller, AB. He attended Morrin School, graduating in 1969, and continued on to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, AB. He returned to the family farm in 1971, where he joined his father and pursued his other interests of rodeoing and curling. In 1973, he moved to the Big Valley area, where he helped to expand the family farm. On December 2, 1978, he married his wife, Joanne, in Drumheller. Thus they started their twenty-four and a half years together farming in the Rumsey/Big Valley area. There they raised their two children, Tyrel Jackson Hodge, born on November 29, 1980, and Raynell Cristine Hodge born on April 7, 1984; both born in Drumheller. Brian's first love was bull riding through which he competed in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association from 1972-78. Placing eleventh in the standings in 1977, he narrowly missed qualifying in the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Brian finished his bull riding career at the Calgary Stampede in 1978. After hanging up his bull riding spurs, Brian and his wife, Joanne, began competing in the Central Alberta Team Roping Association. In 1988, they competed in the Alberta and Canadian Team Roping Finals in Grande Prairie where they placed in the top five. In the winter, Brian excelled at curling, winning many bonspiels, and at the peak of his career in 1995, he competed in the zone playdowns, held in Rumsey, AB. There, he won the right to compete in the Southern Alberta Playdowns where he and his team were noted to be the "Lesser Lights" of the playdowns. Against all odds, he continued on to win a berth in the Safeway Select Provincial Playdowns in Edmonton, AB. He curled in the Canadian Cattlemen's Association for many years, and once again he was victorious, winning the bonspiels in 2000 and 2001. During the summer months, most of his spare time was spent on the golf course with his many friends and his family, and once again he never failed to win various tournaments. Brian was involved in many clubs and sports -- Rumsey/Rowley 4H, Big Valley Elks, baseball and hockey, he was an accomplished skier and card player, and enjoyed visiting friends all over Alberta. It seemed that no matter which town you drove into, he always seemed to know someone... and if he didn't, he would ask. Brian is survived by Joanne, his devoted and loving wife, his children, Tyrel Hodge of Sylvan Lake, and Raynell Hodge of Calgary; sisters Maureen (Lorne) Howard of Innisfail, Peggy (Jim) Freeman of Olds, Marianne Hodge of Vulcan, Joanne (Richard) Schinnour of Drumheller, Gloria (Fred) Adams of Caroline, Betty (Tim) Primrose of Rumsey; brother Doug (Lorna) Hodge of Rumsey; mother-in-law Shirley Ilcisin of Drumheller; sisters-in-law Sharon (Phil) Wright of Red Deer, Sheila (Bruce) Hendriks of Australia, and Karen Sanchez of Calgary; and many nieces and nephews, and great nephew. He is predeceased by his mother, Beulah (1996), his father, Aubrey Hodge (1998), father-in-law, Joseph Ilcisin (1996), and niece, Christina (1984). Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 15 of 2003 at the Jubilee Hall in Big Valley, AB. Interment followed at the Rumsey Cemetery. Kingcott -- Harold Roland 1927 - 2003
Harold Roland Kingcott went to be with the Lord on September 8, 2003 in Drumheller at the age of 75. Harold was born at home in Berry Creek, AB on October 9, 1927 to Roland and Mabel Kingcott. He resided there with his family until 1947 when he moved to the Michichi area to work several jobs. During this time he met his wife Audrey Trout. After working various locations as farm help, they settled at their present location where they raised their five daughters. Besides farming, Harold drove school bus for over 20 years. He was actively involved in his church and was always willing to help a friend and neighbor. Harold is lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Audrey, his daughters Mary (Rick) Lilla, Barbara (Terry) Soderquist, Shirley (Kevin) Friedley, Dorothy (Ian) Smith, Linda (Norbert) Klaiber. The warmth and strength of his love will always be with his grandchildren; Neva, Nathan, Kyle, Jackie, Chris, Travis, Kent, Aaron, Sean, Tristan, Juliet, Colin, Brandon and Justin. He is also survived by his sister Mavis (Robert) Hunter, a sister-in-law Muriel Hole, loving members of Audrey's family and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was predeceased by his parents Roland (1970), Mabel (1992), a twin sister, Mary, at birth, his brothers Herbert (1937), Wallace (1984), and his sister Netta (1992). Committal services were held at Delia Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service on September 12, 2003 at the Delia Community Centre with Harold Hunter and David Graham officiating. Sandell -- James Douglas (Doug) January 17, 1923 - September 14, 2003
We will always remember Doug's life as one lived well and with joy. He always had time and had mastered the art of living in the moment long before it became a fashion. Doug's early years were spent on the farm at Little Gem where he was raised by his parents Eva and John Sandell. On the prairies of Eastern Alberta he learned that a days work done well was it's own reward and that tomorrow brought with it the opportunity to complete that which did not get done today. He learned the value of a dollar during the Great Depression, his formative years. Through the years, Doug had many and varied interests. On the farm during his youth he discovered music and played the family organ habitually between chores. Later he played piano in a band with neighbours and even supplied the music for an entire evening when no one else could get there. He was known as an athlete both on the farm and later in Wayne where he played first base with the local team. He also played with the Lacombe Tournament Winning Brooks Buffaloes during the mid 1950's. Doug was involved in the energy industry for many years; first in the mines at Wayne and later as a battery operator in the oilfields at Munson and Leduc. Doug moved to Rumsey in 1963 to farm with his sister Helen when her husband passed away. They worked together on the farm until 1986 when they retired and lived there until 1996 when they moved to Drumheller. Retirement on the farm saw Doug in the garden for hours at a time and resulted in a great deal of produce. Doug has lived in the Hunts Place Apartments where he led a comfortable life and maintained his own place. He obtained permission to maintain a flower garden outside his window and could be found daily at Helen's vegetable garden. Doug turned his attention to cooking and spent many hours in his kitchen where he made cakes, cookies and the occasional pot of stew or pot roast. Doug is survived by his sister Helen Todor; one niece, Judy (Walter) Stoneman; their children, daughter Stacey (Dave) Janzen and daughter Breanna, Darren (Karrie) Stoneman, and their son Corbyn; one newphew, Michael (Carol) Todor; and their daughter Becky. There will be a memorial service at the Rumsey Hall on Friday, September 19, 2003 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
Whitford -- Phyllis Elizabeth 1911 - 2003
Phyllis Elizabeth Whitford passed away peacefully on September 9, 2003 in Drumheller at the age of 93 years. Phyllis was born May 13, 1911 in Konernick near Viking, Alberta. Phyllis moved to Drumheller at a young age and resided in Drumheller until her passing. Phyllis remained in her residence in Drumheller until shortly after her second husband, Percy, passed away at which time she moved into Sunshine Lodge and later into Continuing Care at the Drumheller District Health Services. The warm friendly atmosphere and wonderful care and attention she received during her stay at these facilities were thoroughly enjoyed by her and truly made her feel like she was at home. Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her cooking, sewing and gardening. Phyllis found pleasure in being busy by doing such tasks others would have considered being a job. Phyllis was predeceased by her husbands, Carl Polych and Percy Whitford; and son, Frank Polych; and daughter-in-law, Ruby Polych. She was also predeceased by her father and mother, John and Julia Zack, and twelve brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sons, Walter and Stanley Polych of Drumheller; and daughter-in-law, Fluorina Polych of New West Minister; as well as her brothers, Lawrence Zack of Camrose and Stanley Zack of Salmon Arm; and sister, Kristine Gregory of Edmonton. Phyllis will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Allen (Bonnie) Polych, Karen (Frances) Holt, Sheila (Rick) Paullus, Sherry (Gord) Polych, and Patti Polych, Francine Polych, Debbie (Ed) McIntosh, Carl (Laura) Polych, as well as 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Chapel in the Valley on September 13, 2003 at 10 a.m. with Envoy Roy Bladen officiating and interment at the Drumheller Cemetery. BROOKS-KIRCHGESSNER Marcella (Martha) (nee -- Almon) 1906 - 2003
Mrs. Marcella Brooks-Kirchgessner of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Southwood Care Centre, after a brief illness, at the age of 97 years. Marcella was born in George's River, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, moved to Nacmine, Alberta in 1925, and married William Brooks in 1928. Marcella was a hard worker and frugal during the depression, taking in boarders from the local coal mine. In 1956, Marcella and Bill moved to Calgary after the birth of their first grandchild, Jo-Ann. She worked as a maid in the Braemer Hotel and then as security at Royalite Oil Company. Working as a maid for several families in Calgary, a job she loved and took pride doing. Even in her later years she loved to be active around the house, always on the go and disliked idleness. While living in Glenmore Manor from 1984-1998 she was always helping her neighbors, seeing they had a warm meal or taking care of them when they were ill. Throughout Marcella's son-in-law's lengthy illness 1983-1986, she visited him daily as they were the best of friends. In 2000, Dawn and Tony presented Marcella with her only great-granddaughter Delaine, who gave hours of joy. During her short s tay at the Southwood Care Centre, she tried to help other residents. Marcella always had a positive outlook, living each day to the fullest. She got high off people and loved them of all ages, truly young at heart! Marcella was the loving mother of son, Bill (Lorraine) Brooks; she was a wonderful grandmother to Dawn (Tony) Scott, and Jo-Ann de Repentigny (Denis Couturier) and great grandmother to Delaine Scott. She is survived by great-nephew Ross (Elaine) Ferby and dear friends Allen Hopper and Ally Molyneux. Marcella is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia. Marcella was predeceased by her parents and all of her nineteen brothers and sisters. Her first husband William Brooks of forty-five years passed away June 1970; her second husband Max Kirchgessner of two years passed away May 1979; son-in-law Joseph de Repentigny October 1986, and daughter Dorothy de Repentigny June 2002. She was also predeceased by many other nieces, nephews and dear friends. Makos Magdelene 1916 - 2003
Mrs. Magdelene Makos of Drumheller passed away peacefully at the Drumheller and District Health Services Continuing Care (Nursing Home) on March 4, 2003 where she resided since March 4, 1994. She celebrated her 96th birthday on August 5, 2002. She migrated to Canada in 1928 with baby daughter Elizabeth, from Etes Hungary to join her husband John who had arrived earlier to work in the valley coal mines. When she was able, she enjoyed playing bingo at the Pioneer Trail Centre. Gardening was always her greatest joy. The "welcome mat" was always at her door for family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters of Hungary and by husband John in 1966, and special sons-in-law Jim Hajash in 1985 and Bob Trembecky in 1994, grandchildren Betty Hajash 1952, Bill Hajash in 1971. Lovingly remembered by daughters Elizabeth and Helen and son John and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Malach Josephine, Lorraine 1933-2003
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorraine Malach on March 3rd, 2003 in Drumheller, Alberta. Born March 23, 1933 in Regina, Saskatchewan, she was the only child of the late Stan and Beth Malach. Lorraine attended Sacred Heart Academy and the School of Art in Regina. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Europe on highly coveted study tour awards. An artist of immeasurable talent, Lorraine's pieces adorn the walls of many churches, schools, public buildings, private collections and the Vatican. Each piece, each commission, was carefully planned and researched, sometimes requiring years to complete. She had been working on a large ceramic commission for the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller at the time of her death. Lorraine was a brilliant person. It was her passion for learning and knowledge that set her apart. Her desire to know more about this beautiful universe in which we all live was reflected in her art. We will miss her humour, her wit, her conversation and her exceptional mind. She will be deeply missed by her many friends. Funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Rosary Cathedral, in Regina on Monday, March 10th at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Don MacDonald o.f.m. Presider.
Weigum George (Geo) 1909 - 2003
George was born May 22, 1909 in Grimm, North Dakota. In 1911 his family moved to Orion, Alberta. Later they moved to Huxley, Alberta and then to the Torrington, Alberta district where he farmed most of his life. In 1974 he married Alvina Bertsch nee Renn and they lived in Wimbourne, Alberta until 1988 when they moved to Olds. Following a stroke in 1990, Geo needed long term care so he and Alvina moved to Drumheller. He lived in the Nursing Home until his passing on March 8, 2003. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Alvina; a brother Paul and his wife, Alvina; a sister Edith Leischner of Olds. Two step sons, their families which included six step grandchildren who lovingly called him "grandpa". He will also he fondly remembered by all his nieces and nephews and all who knew him. Funeral Services will be held at the Drumheller Alliance Church on Wednesday, March 13, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the Gideon Bible Society. La Place, Charles (Chick) 1918 - 2003
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles (Chick) La Place on March 8, 2003. Chick was born in Calgary on November 11, 1918, the son of Nunzio and Rachel La Placa. He is survived by -- sons, Donald (Beverly) of Calgary and Robin (Joanne) of Cochrane; daughters, Lori (Doug) Roberts of Byemoor and Erin of Drumheller; grandchildren, Brian (Stacey), Scott, Michael, David, Kara, Logan, Rebecca, Rachel; and great-granddaughter Hailee. Chick also leaves behind -- brother Louis (Mary) of Calgary; and sisters Marie (Hugh) McLafferty of Calgary, Florence (Stan) Cymbala of Edmonton and Eileen Jensen of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Chick was predeceased by -- his parents; wife Luvern (Holbrook); brothers, Thomas, James and Richard; and his granddaughter Dana. Chick spent his young years in the "Crowsnest Pass" accumulating many happy memories that he loved to recount in later years. In 1942, Chick enlisted and served in Europe with the Eighth Field Ambulance RCAMC. Upon returning, he resided in Bellevue and worked in the coal mines. He moved to Calgary where he met and later married the love of his life, Luvern Holbrook on July 4, 1953. He worked for Pilkington Glass until his retirement in 1983. Chick also worked evenings for the A.N.A.F. for a number of years to support his growing family. Chick was first and foremost a devoted husband, father and brother, and he always lent a helping hand whenever the need arose. He was especially attentive to his wife Luvern throughout her long illness. Always the entertainer, he loved making those around him laugh. He also was an avid curler into his seventies, and he enjoyed grooming his beautiful yard. He was an active member of the Ogden's Seniors, the Ogden Legion and the A.N.A.F. Club. After Luvern's
death in 1999, Chick moved to Scenic Acres Retirement Residence in Calgary and spent the last year under the compassionate care of the staff at the Colonel Belcher Veteran Care Centre. Chick's family wishes to also thank Dr. Thornton and the nurses at the Rockyview Hospital (Unit 81) for their special care. Smyth -- Clara Irene (Lippert) - December 2, 1922 - March 16, 2003
Clara Irene (Lippert) Smyth was born in Schuler, Alberta, December 2, 1922 and died of cancer on March 16, 2003 in the Hanna Hospital. Third in a family of four girls and two boys, most of her schooling was taken in Bassano. At the age of 14 she went to work in various homes as a hired girl. She met Ross Smyth while working in the Victor District and they were married on January 2, 1940. They have resided on the farm in the Craigmyle area all 63 years of their married lives. She is survived by her husband Ross Smyth, sons Bob (Eileen) and David (Bonnie); her daughters Wendy (Ron) Gobeil and Norah (Clark) Watts; her sisters, Ruth (John) Taylor and Lil Lewis; and brother Ben (Shirley) Lippert. She was predeceased by their son Bill in 1991; baby daughter in 1951; her parents, Bertha and Fred Lippert; a brother, Henry; a sister, Elsie and her mother-in-law; father-in-law; and brother-in-law. She leaves to mourn her 12 treasured grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Clara was actively involved in her home, her church and community for many years. She held offices for many years in the Victor Ladies Club, 4-H groups and the Craigmyle Church. She was known for her carpentry and fix-it skills in the community. She continued to make bread and cinnamon buns which she distributed generously until her 80th birthday. She was an avid reader and enjoyed music, sewing, making rugs, playing cards as well as entertaining family and friends. Vogel -- William
Mr. William Vogel passed away at the Drumheller Hospital on Sunday, March 23, 2003 at the age of 87 years. William and his wife Lillian farmed for 30 years in the Compeer area and retired to Drumheller in 1975. William and Lillian spent their retirement years in the Newcastle area and he was an active member in his community. He was a great lover of music, playing the accordion for many years. William will be sadly missed by his wife Lillian of 56 years. He is also survived by his daughters Judy (Dale) Berry, Fay Jackson, Joyce (Clifford) Ulsanden, Joe (Pauline) Vogel, Jane Seely, Mary-Agnes Vogel and Bill Smith, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Calon -- Mary Anne Theresa 1917-2003
Mary Anne Theresa Calon passed away on April 2, 2003 at the Drumheller Continuing Care facility. Mary was predeceased by her mother Celestine Calon, father Edward Calon, brothers George Calon and Joseph Calon and brothers-in-law Don Milne and Ray Harvey. She leaves to remember, her sisters, Anne Milne and Celestine Harvey, brothers Edward Calon (Elinor), Charles Calon, Frank Calon (Louise), Paul Calon (Barbara), sisters-in-law Marie Calon and Jean Calon as well as 29 nieces and nephews. Mary grew up on the family farm in the Verdant Valley area and never lost her love for the country life. She left the farm to obtain a teaching degree and taught in many locations throughout the province and beyond. She loved to travel and journeyed to many interesting and exotic destinations around the world. Later, when Mary retired in 1977, she became one of Drumhellers' recognizable people about town. She was an avid, determined walker who put on an incredible amount of miles throughout her lifetime. As a brittle diabetic, there were many times that Mary required the assistance of others. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all those "Drumheller Angels" who were always there in her time of need. Your unfailing care and compassion were proof to Mary that you were indeed heaven sent each and every time she was in need. Mary remained true to her faith and close to her God until the very end. She will be remembered for her devotion to her religion as well as her great love for her family and friends. It was a privilege to witness Mary gracefully accept the diminishing conditions of her life and glide effortlessly to a higher level of grace.
