Engel -- Germaine Doreen
Germaine Doreen Engel (nee Gayse) of Sylvan Lake passed away in Red Deer on September 15, 2005 at the age of 65 years. Germaine is survived by her son Keri (Michelle) Hagemann and family; her daughters Shauna (Pat) Voltner and family, and Rhonda (Charlie) Schwab and family; her mother Alice Gayse; her sister Beverley (Wayne) Miller and family; her brother Barry (Monika) Gayse and family; and her husband Ervine Engel. Prayers were held at the Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church on Monday, September 19, 2005 at 7 P.M. for the late Germaine Doreen Engel. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Father Victor Eze officiating. Inurnment will follow at Drumheller Cemetery on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at 3 P.M.

Erickson -- Arnold Roy 1912 - 2005
Arnold was born September 9, 1912 in Kulm, North Dakota and died September 13, 2005 in Drumheller, Alberta. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara, in 1995, six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by two sons, LaVerne (Arlene) grandchildren Kyrsten and Kjel, and Timothy (Karla) grandchildren Jill (Jeff), Matthew (Shauna) and Mark; one daughter, Flora Mae (Allan) Simpson grandchildren Wendy and Harlan (Leah), and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Lenora (Henry) Goertz; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arnold moved with his family to the Hythe district in the Peace River Country in 1927. He was in the first graduating class from Peace River Bible Institute. His first pastorate was in North Star. He founded churches in Manning, Notikiwin, Deadwood, Edmonton, and Keep Hills. He married Clara Graber in 1939 and went on to pastor churches in Edmonton, Rosebud, Lethbridge and Camrose. In 1981 he and Clara retired to Rosebud to be with their children and grandchildren in helping develop Rosebud School of the Arts and the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. In his later years, Arnold had time to write a history of Prince Bernadotte of Sweden and his family history. He will also be remembered for his many drawings and paintings. Arnold's Godly influences and positive outlook on life made a deep impression on his family, friends, and acquaintances. His lifeıs work is an enduring legacy. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 20 at Rosebud Church, internment at Rosebud Cemetery. Laverty -- Dorothy Elaine 1937 - 2005
Dorothy Elaine Laverty (nee Bazant) was born in Medicine Hat, March 8, 1937 to Leo and Lydia Bazant. She grew up on a farm in the Strathmore area and later in Calgary, near Nose Hill Creek, the third child of eleven. She attended St. Josephıs school and went to become a nurses aid (CNA). Her family was proud. Subsequently she had postings in Didsbury, Elkpoint, Castor and Innisfail. Her family recalls her attending many a family crisis, helping out wherever she was needed. Ultimately she ended up working in Hanna, where she met her husband, Terrance and changed her career. She had four daughters, Patricia, Nancy, Terrie and Erin, and was very proud of each one of them in their own way. Early on Dorothy was involved in many service clubs; the Verdant Valley Dorcus branch of the Womenıs Institute, Order of the Royal Purple, and later as a thespian with the Passion Play Society. She was a stand-in several locally filmed movie productions. Between 1965 to 1976, she drove the Starland County school bus, braving the cold and mosquitoes. She worked on the family farm in the Hand Hills area and was known to have a gigantic garden. Her family recalls many a week canning and later entire freezers full of vegetables from it. Although moving on from the farm, she never lost her love of the earth and soil, and was known to have a green thumb. She was passionate about greenhouses and attending her garden. She had a great love of animals and rescued more than a few strays throughout her life. In later years she loved to travel the mountains, knit and play the piano. She passed away September 12, 2005 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She is predeceased by her parents; brother Michael; sisters Mary, Florence, Virginia, and Judy; nephew Bradley Bazant; and brother-in-law Len Odnokon. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Laverty-Rolf (Douglass), Nancy Main (Darryl), Terrie Laverty, and Erin Laverty (Brian); her childrenıs father Terrance Laverty; grandchildren Daniel Main, Ryan Wood, Kyle Wood, Justin Main, Aidan Rolf, Tyler Parenteau, Lauren main, and Matthew Rolf; sisters Audrey Tiberio (Sebastian), Marjorie Odnokon, Sylvia Gillespie, Sandra Land (Fred); brother Peter (Dorothy); brother-in-laws Doug Carmichael (Judy) and Dale Hagen (Mary); along with numerous nieces, nephews and relatives in the Strathmore area. She will be sorely missed. Life is eternal And love is immortal And death is only a horizon And a horizon is nothing but the limit of our sight. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, September 17, 2005 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with Father Wayne Poile as celebrant. Interment followed in the Strathmore Catholic Cemetery.
Noy -- Bill 1939 - 2005
Bill Noy passed away at the Strathmore Hospital on September 19, 2005 at the age of 66 years. He is survived by his ever-loving wife and faithful companion Vivian, his children Darryl (Sue) Noy, Bev Bureau, Janet Noy (Scott Verge) and Shelley (Paul) Herr and his grandchildren Brittany and Lauren Bureau, Toby and Samantha Noy, Adelle and Calvin Herr. Also loved by his sisters Mary Kettenbach, Helen (Aaron) Wiltzen, Jean (John) Cammaert and Ann (John) Ashton. He was born on January 23, 1939 to Alphonse and Wilhelmina Noy of Rosebud. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961 with a degree in Agriculture and met his wife Viv while there. In University, Bill received many awards including the Tommy Fraser award for Outstanding Sportsman. Bill and Viv married in October 1963 and they returned to Rosebud to farm with his father. Bill was very active in community work, serving on the Rosebud Hall Board, the Rosebud Lions Club, Rosebud Gas Co-op and the Municipal Planning Commission. Bill and Viv retired to Strathmore in 2000. They became actively involved in the Strathmore Seniors Centre where Bill particularly enjoyed many hours with new friends. Bill enjoyed nothing better than a hard day's work on the farm, travelling, windsurfing, snowmobiling, camping with family and friends, a day's fishing at Fork Lake or a card game with friends. He was known as a prankster and his sense of humor was enjoyed by all who knew him. In later years, Bill was slowed down by Parkinson's Disease, which he faced with courage and peace of mind. This is not a sad day - rejoice because Bill lived each day as if it were his last. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Rockyford on Friday, September 23, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Bossert -- Phillip
Phillip passed away suddenly on September 20, 2005 at the age of 58 years. He will be survived by his common-law spouse, Helen Hatch; children Vern (Ann), Jackie, Roxanne (Chris) Gosse, Allan, Karen and Roxann (Chuck); as well as many grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a brother, Orvin (Judy); two sisters, Lucy (Elmer) and Lora; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Bullen -- Margaret (Lawrence) 1923 - 2005
Margaret was born January 12, 1923 in Drumheller and passed away September 19, 2005 in Nanaimo, B.C. She was predeceased by her husband Donald in 2002. Also, her mother and father, William and Mae Lawrence. She leaves to mourn, her daughter Maureen (Bruce) Archer; grandchildren Gregory, Brooke and Madison; son James Bullen; sister Eileen Smith (Jim Kirby); brother Gilbert Lawrence (Ruby Burka). Margaret received her nursing training in Ponoka and then worked in Drumheller Hospital from 1946 - 1971. The family then moved to Duncan, B.C. where she enjoyed her gardening, bowling and golfing. Goodwin -- Gary December 11, 1934 - September 22, 2005
Gary Goodwin passed away suddenly at his home in Morrin, Alberta on September 22, 2005. He is survived by his children -- John (Alma) of Red Deer, AB, Bob (Barbara) of Calgary, AB, Trish of Edmonton, Andrea (Scott) of Calgary, AB and Chris (Christine) of Calgary, AB; his grandchildren -- Megan of Toronto, ON, Jeneveve, Kaitlin and Alex of Red Deer, AB, Shelby of Calgary, AB, Adam of Red Deer, AB, Robert and Joshua of Calgary, AB; and his great-grandson, Aries of Red Deer, AB. He is also survived by his step-children, Shannon, Jim, Farrell, Bill and Paula OıMalley (Goodwin), their families; and Shaun, Darren and Danielle Craig and their families; good friends, Kevin DeMille, Jason Wolfe and Rick Lindgren; and by his best friend and faithful companion, Smudge. Gary was predeceased by his daughter, Geraldine Lee; parents, Jack and Freda; his sister, Marguerite; and son, Darren. Gary was born and raised in and around Oak Lake, MB. After moving to Alberta in the late O60s, he was employed in the farming and road construction industries until he was hired on as a farm labourer for many years by Walter and Elisabeth Linder of Morrin until their move to B.C. He was well-known for his tomatoes (especially beef steak) and many shared in their harvest. He will be missed by his family and his many friends. As per Gary's request, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Courtney-Winter's Chapel with a reception to follow at the Morrin Hotel. Luzyzyn -- Mike
Mike Luzyzyn of East Coulee, passed away September 20, 2005 after recently being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Pauline, and his brothers John, Bill and Alex. He is survived by many friends. Mike was born in Wayne, but his heart was in East Coulee. This past summer he was acknowledged as one of East Couleeıs longest residents. He was proud to have worked 30 hard years in the coal mines. Montgomery -- James Robert 1928 - 2005
Jimmie Montgomery passed away on September 20, 2005. Jimmie was born on February 9, 1928 in Drumheller and resided on his farm near Morrin, with his loving wife, Diana of 48 years, who predeceased him. Jimmie will be sadly missed by his children Brian (Susan), Gerald (Dorraine), and Kelly (Cindy) and by his grandchildren, Tim, Rick, Jennifer, Brett, Kyle and Evan. Jimmie was predeceased by his mother Emily, father Thomas and brother Vance (Clara). He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters, Eugene, Steve (Pat), Nancy, June, Agnes and numerous nieces and nephews. Jimmie as a hard working farmer, loving husband, father and grandfather. He was very dedicated to his family and will always be remembered for his strength and support. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, hockey and loved to follow his kids and grandchildren in all their sports and activities. Seitz -- Anton Martin "Tony"
Anton Martin Seitz, or "Tony" as everyone knew him, was born February 7th, 1929 in Senlac, Saskatchewan the first son of Jacob and Eva. He went to be with God October 1st, 2005 at Drumheller Alberta. Tony was raised on the farm along with his eight brothers and sisters. Tony was a hard worker from a young age and continued this work ethic throughout the rest of his life. He worked as a mechanic in the air force and continued this trade until his retirement eleven years ago. His parents Jacob and Eva, his sister Catherine and brother John all predeceased Tony. He is leaving his wife Lucille and nine stepchildren to mourn his passing. Also his children Gail, Angie (Darrell) and Butch (Myrna); grandchildren Jennifer, Toni, Jody and Christopher; great grandchildren Logan and Nathan; and his first wife Alice. Along with his brother Vince (Susan); sisters Margaret, Helen, Theresa, Caroline (Ed) and Evelyn (Elmer); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Prayer Vigil was held at St. Anthonyıs Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday October 4th, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, October 5th, 2005 10:00 a.m. Interment at Drumheller Cemetery, and reception at Rosedale Hall. Starchuk -- John Peter (AKA -- Jack) May 15, 1929 - September 27, 2005
Jack Starchuk passed away on September 27, 2005 at the age of 76. Born and raised in Drumheller, he lived and loved his work as a Surveyor, which took him around the world and gave him much solace. Survived by his twin brother Jim; his three children Jack, Bethia, and Wendy; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and his good friend Madge. We will miss his humble kindness. Chambers -- Harold Spencer 1915 - 2005
Harold Spencer Chambers passed away peacefully at Drumheller Long Term Care on October 7, 2005. Harold was born February 10, 1915 in Drumheller to parents Spencer and Frances Chambers. Harold grew up on the farm in the Rainbow area the eldest of 5 children -- Eleanor, Gordon, Gladys, and Ken. Harold attended Cotter School, after which he purchased the Len Ewing 1/2 section and began his farming career in the early O40ıs. In 1945, Harold married the love of his life, Gertrude Steward. They then continued to increase their land holdings and started their Black Angus cattle herd. Through 1946-1966, Harold owned and managed the Burn Brite Coal Company. Community was very important to Harold and he was involved in many community initiatives. He was councillor for the MD of Starland from 1954-1960. Harold also plowed snow for the MD, opening Hi-Way 9 from Morrin to Delia with his cat in 1952. Harold used his cat to dig dams, dugouts and for well-site reclamation. He was president of the Rainbow Mutual Telephone Company in 1946, which was later taken over by AGT. Harold was very innovative, bringing in 32-Volt electricity and running water when that was unheard of in our area. His children being important to him, Harold was president of the home and school committee in Delia. He was very involved in the Baptist Church, singing in the choir for many years. He also had hobbies in crystal radio sets and model aircraft. In 1963, he and 9 others founded the Big Country Antique Museum Company, which established the Homestead Antique Museum that opened to the public 1965. This became Harold's greatest passion and he devoted countless hours working down at the museum site. Harold is predeceased by his mother, Frances, his father, Spencer, and his sister, Gladys. He leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Gertie, and their four children -- Marilyn Wattenbarger (Louis), Carolyn Mammel (Don), Melvin Chambers (Sandy), and Diane Thomas (Ron). Also his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harold is also survived by his brothers Gordon Chambers (Eva), Ken Chambers (Phyllis), and sister, Eleanor Gaschnitz. The family would like to thank Dr. Lyle and the staff at the Drumheller long term care for their years of care and support. Special thanks to Sophie Savrtka for the time she spent with Harold and her support to the family. Special thanks also to Eleanor Gaschnitz for all the time she spent with him. Cowles -- Harold Edward December 7, 1914 - September 30, 2005
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Harold at Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 90. Harold was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by his mother Henrietta Legacy, his father Harold Cowles and his brother Carlton Cowles. Married for 68 years, Harold is survived by his wife Helen Cowles, and daughter, Beverley Larson. Grandchildren -- Kevin and wife Judy of Chilliwack, Jeff and wife Kathy of Drumheller, AB, Graham and wife Carrie of Sooke, B.C.; and six great-granchildren, Dale, Marissa, Kyle, Tyler, Reanna and Eric. Harold and his family settled in Drumheller, AB in the early 1920's. He met and married his wife Helen (Kerr) and had one daughter Beverley. He worked as a finishing carpenter and enjoyed working with his hands, building and fixing many things from radios, cars, appliances and woodworking. He also enjoyed music and played the banjo, violin and saxophone in his orchestra called The Blue Jays. They played for many dances around the Drumheller community. In 1956 they moved to Calgary and in 1963 to Surrey, B.C. Followed by their daughter and her three sons in 1970. The past four years were spent in Chilliwack close to daughter Beverley and grandson Kevin's family. Harold will be missed by many other family members close to our hearts as well, and, joining us at this sad time. The family wishes to thank Dr. M. Gruno, as well as the nursing staff on the third floor of Chilliwack General Hospital for the care they provided.
Hunter -- Arthur Edward
Surrounded by his loving wife and family, Art passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2005 in the Drumheller Health Care Centre at the age of 73 years. Art will be remembered for his witty sense of humour and friendly conversation, his fondness for fishing, baseball, hockey, and playing cards, and for his determination to make the most of each day. His tender and comical gestures will forever be cherished by his wife, Dorothy, and his positive and caring nature will forever be a lasting gift to his children and grandchildren. Left to cherish Artıs memory are his wife of 46 years, Dorothy; daughter Kelly (Tony) Owens and children, Tyler and Janelle; son, Gerry (Theresa) Hunter and children Layne and Scott; and daughter, Tracy and fiancé Mark Heartt and children Brandon, Tyler, Cassidy and Zachery. Art was predeceased by his parents, John and Grace, and brothers Doug and Wes (Jiffy). He will also be lovingly remembered by his sister, Mabel Wayne, brother Ken (Ethel) Hunter, sister Muriel (Brian) Hole, brother Ron (Shirley) Hunter, brother Reg (Darlene) Hunter, brother Harold (Amy) Hunter, sister Lorraine (Doug) Stanger; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at Knox United Church, Drumheller, AB with Rev. Harold Hunter officiating. MacDonald -- Alexander (Sandy) 1940 - 2005
Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald passed away suddenly on October 9th, 2005 at his home in Lehigh. He was born in Drumheller in 1940, and raised in Wayne. Sandy retired in 1993 from Alberta Transportation after 37 years then went to work for UMA in Calgary in 1994. He was always up for a challenge so when in 2002 Stantec from Red Deer offered him a position on a two year water line project from Drumheller to Beiseker, he took up this challenge with gusto. It was the highlight of his 49 year career. Sandy loved the times he spent having big supper gatherings with his family in Rosedale or putting on a BBQ at his home. When he wasn't reading from his huge collection of western books, he loved to play cards, work in his yard and take Jake for a ride. He is survived by his wife Marianne, his children Colleen (Verne), Bob (Kim), son-in-law Jim, first wife Sophie, 6 grandchildren James, Evan, Danny, Trevor, Kyle and Sydney, sister Linda (Rob) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Alex and Nettie, son Darren, daughter Andrea, as well as brothers Joe and Ken and sister Ruth. There will be a Celebration of Life lunch held at the Drumheller Inn on Friday, October 14th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Foundation (in memory of his mother and daughter).
