Laverty -- Dorothy Elaine 1937 - 2005

Dorothy Elaine Laverty (nee Bazant) was born in Medicine Hat, March 8, 1937 to Leo and Lydia Bazant. She grew up on a farm in the Strathmore area and later in Calgary, near Nose Hill Creek, the third child of eleven. She attended St. Josephıs school and went to become a nurses aid (CNA). Her family was proud. Subsequently she had postings in Didsbury, Elkpoint, Castor and Innisfail. Her family recalls her attending many a family crisis, helping out wherever she was needed. Ultimately she ended up working in Hanna, where she met her husband, Terrance and changed her career. Early on Dorothy was involved in many service clubs; the Verdant Valley Dorcus branch of the Womenıs Institute, Order of the Royal Purple, and later as a thespian with the Passion Play Society. She was a stand-in several locally filmed movie productions. Between 1965 to 1976, she drove the Starland County school bus, braving the cold and mosquitoes. She worked on the family farm in the Hand Hills area and was known to have a gigantic garden. Her family recalls many a week canning and later entire freezers full of vegetables from it. Although moving on from the farm, she never lost her love of the earth and soil, and was known to have a green thumb. She was passionate about greenhouses and attending her garden.
