MARTIN -- Oscar 1918 - 2007
It is with great sadness the family of Oscar Martin announces in the calling of Oscar by the Lord to the great fishing hole in the sky. Oscar passed away September 28, 2007 at the age of 88 in Hanna. Oscar was born December 11, 1918 however his birth certificate said different, December 22, 1918. So he got to celebrate his birthday twice each year. Born to Dan and Sophie Martin, the fifth child, south of Hanna. At a young age Oscar’s family moved to Huxley then to Trochu. However Oscar moved back to Hanna in 1941. So he spent most of his life in and around the Hanna area.
Oscar had many passions including gardening his geraniums and tomatoes, fishing at any of the local fishing holes after supper, on weekends, spring, summer, fall and winter. You could find Oscar at the Hanna pool hall most Friday evenings and Saturdays playing on pool table number two or three. He loved playing most card games however cribbage was his favourite. Anyone who came over to the house would be challenged to playing on the shuffle board in the basement. Oscar enjoyed many extensive holidays with family, friends and relatives around the world. He also had the gift of gab and a different sense of humour whether at the coffee shop, the gas station, mall, at any local function or over the fence. That was Oscar. Later in life Oscar could be found at the Hanna Canada Grey playing the VLT’s, which some times got him into a bit of trouble. Gramps will be remembered by his grandchildren by his slobbery kisses and the constant whistling to an unrecognizable tune.Oscar only had a few jobs. His first job in Hanna was delivering milk. Then he started in the fall of 1942 a long career as a CNR car inspector at the Hanna shops, where he was employed for some 35 years. After his retirement he drove for the Hanna Co-op, then later delivered flowers for Ginny’s Flowers. Oscar loved to drive the highways and back roads stopping all of a sudden to discover and recover a tarp strap, tool, or whatever, that would have fallen off the vehicle. He was a man that lived through the depression of the 30’s so his possessions were of great value to him so it was hard to depart with his treasures. Oscar always had a room full of treasures. Oscar was a member of the Hanna Rod and Gun Club for many years. He was the chairman of the CNR Railway Car-Man Brotherhood of North America (RCBNA) from 1954 ‘til his retirement.
Oscar and Ann were married October 31, 1943. They were blessed with two children, Glenda in 1949 and Murray in 1956. Oscar was predeceased by his parents Dan and Sophie, sisters Bertha and Martha, brothers Alberta, Ron (Reynold), Leonard and son-in-law Lyman Trout. Oscar is survived by his family, daughter Glenda Trout and family Cheryl, Kevin and Corry; son Murray (Karen) and family Elise, Heather and Jessica; by his sister Ella and brother Emil; a sister-in-law Tillie; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral of Oscar Martin will take place at the First United Church in Hanna at 2 p.m. Friday, October 5. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to diabetes, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Cancer Fund. This was Oscar, and Oscar’s life. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Home entrusted with the arrangements.
