MORRISON -- Gerald David October 13, 1926 - December 23, 2007
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of GERRY Morrison. Gerry was born in Calgary Alberta to Kathleen (Innes Gunn) and Charles Morrison. Gerry passed away peacefully in Comox, B.C. on Dec 23 2007 surrounded by family and friends. Gerry grew up in Calgary Alberta. The first job Gerry ever had was as a kid shovelling coal in his local church. He then worked as a bicycle courier around the town of Calgary. After he left school he had a short stint in the Canadian armed forces armored tanks division. After he left the army Gerry began working at the Canadian Utilities Company. Gerry went from being a linesman and climbing power poles to a supervisory position. During his 33 years with the company Gerry lived in Hannah, Lloydminster, Stettler, and Vegreville Alberta. Gerry made close friends that are with him still, wherever he lived. After retiring Gerry moved to Comox, BC. Where he met his wife Bernice. Gerry and Bernice spent over 25 extraordinarily happy years together sailing, hiking, kayaking and square dancing for two decades as ‘ocean waves.’ They enjoy skiing, gardening and have traveled the world together. One of their many favorite vacation spots was Hawaii; another favorite of theirs was a month long holiday in Portugal. Gerry was an avid golfer, curler and dart player. They are members of the Comox Valley Horticultural Society where Gerry was a part of the social committee; he made the best tea and coffee! Gerry will be missed by his daughter Patricia Morrison-Wheeler (Wayne) and grandchildren Mitchell and Bronwyn. His son James Morrison (Mathilda) and grandchildren Elizabeth, Jennifer, Robert, Kathleen. Gerry will leave behind a void of emptiness in the life of his beloved wife Bernice Morrison, daughter Denise (Mike) and grandsons Jonathan and Nicholas Cook. Daughter Rhonda and grandchildren Christian and Coleton Flowers. Gerry will be missed by his many friends and family members. Sister-in-law, Jean Morrison. His niece Jo-ann (Gary) and their children Shannon, Robin, Jay. Nephew Doug (Linda). Other family members, including Barbara (Raymond) and Peggy. Gerry was a kind, caring and gentle man and loved by many friends and family. He very much appreciated the visits and support he received from his many friends. We would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Fitz for his care and compassion during Gerry’s illness. A thank you to home support, to the Provincial Respiratory Outreach Program, Comox Valley Hospice, G.F. Strong Hospital and A.L.S. Centre, the A.L.S. Society of B.C. PATTERSON -- Thomas Allan (Tom) December 27, 1958 – January 1, 2008
Tom Patterson of Rosebud, AB, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the age of 49. Tom will be remembered by his parents Frank and Irene Patterson of Rosebud, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Garry Edwards of Calgary and Cindy and Ward Hum of Cochrane, grandmother Josie Hazelton of Calgary and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. POLAND -- Charles Gerald Dawson
Poland, Charles Gerald Dawson, B.Sc. Petroleum Engineering [U. of A.,1956], B. Ed. [after], P. Eng. Dad peacefully slipped away from us on January 3. Survived by his beloved wife Doris [Dory], and loving children Michael [Carol] and Patricia; he is the cherished grandfather of 4, Samantha, Travis, Rosamund and wee Bridget; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Gerry, as he was known to all, was born in Drumheller in April 1934 to Albert and Edith Poland; whose parents were homesteaders in the Hand Hills early in the last century. Gerry was predeceased by his parents, beloved son Doug, and siblings Jack and Betty. Dad had a long and varied career in the oil patch which book-ended 3 years as an educator in Calgary. He loved to ski, play golf, hike and camp, and swim as well as play his musical instruments [trumpet, alto sax, flugelhorn, clarinet and trombone] in various bands. Dory and he were snowbirds in Mesa, Arizona for over a decade and enjoyed other travels over the years. Dad also relished the annual Dawson clan reunions. Dad was a gentleman, had not an enemy in the world; how many can say that? The family would like to thank the caring and highly professional staff at the Colonel Belcher, especially Tecumseh House, for their stellar care of our Dad this past year. SHADLOCK -- Barbara Lynn May 22, 1967 - January 12, 2008
It is with sadness, love and cherished memories that the family of Barbara Lynn (Shadlock) Donovan announce that she passed away peacefully in Drumheller on January 12, 2008 at the age of 40 following a courageous battle with cancer. Barb was born in Drumheller on May 22, 1967. She attended school in Verdant Valley from grades 1-8 and then attended high school in Drumheller. On July 24, 1993 she married Michael Donovan of Oyen. She enjoyed farming and life on the farm with Michael. She had a passion for flowers and gardening and in November 2000 opened the ‘Flower Patch’ at the farm. She later re-located to Oyen where her business continued to succeed until her illness forced her to close in November 2007. Barb loved the outdoor life, animals, and camping at their acreage near Leslieville. Barb’s firey spirit and quick wit as well as her warm and caring nature will be missed by all who knew her. Her strong will, determination and integrity were attributes that made Barb successful at whatever she put her mind to. She leaves to mourn her husband Michael of Oyen, her 22 year old daughter Megan Stewart of Calgary, her parents Fred and Gerri Shadlock of Drumheller, her sister Donna and Gord Thom and their children Stacey and Deana of Brooks, her sister Sandra and Gerald Martynes and their children Abbigayle, Harrison, and Winston of Drumheller, Michael’s parents Harry and Jeanette Donovan of Medicine Hat, Michael’s sister Maureen and Gord Tyers and their children Robert, Thomas, and Keith of Hanna, Michael’s sister Mona and Fred Darroch of Calgary, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Barb was predeceased by her brother Gene Shadlock in 1969, her paternal grandparents Bill (1991) and Muriel (1983) Shadlock of Drumheller and her maternal grandparents Andy (1988) and Polly (2002) Mortimer of Carbon. The angels came and lifted her up to a better place where she is free to wander through fields of green and flowers in bloom for all eternity. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 2:00pm in the Legion Hall in Oyen. URCH -- Charles Robert May 31, 1911 - January 8, 2008
Charles Robert URCH, passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Continuing Care Centre on January 8, 2008, at the age of 96 years. He was predeceased by Kathleen Edith Urch (Nicholson), his loving wife of 52 years, on June 4, 1989. Charlie was born on May 31, 1911 in Bigstone, Alberta, the oldest child of Frank and Rosina (Adams) Urch, where he lived until he was eleven. He settled in Drumheller in 1940 after working in Calgary, Nanton and Okotoks (where he met Kathleen). In Drumheller, he established a sheet metal and heating business, and after twelve years, commenced farming in the Munson area. Upon retiring in 1971, he and Kathleen moved into Drumheller where he could always be found tinkering on projects in his workshop. He loved to work with his hands and there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t fix. He will forever be remembered for his humor, determination and love for life! His memory will be fondly cherished by his children, Ronald (Carol) Urch, Margaret (Bert) Hoy, Barbara (Gerald) Clarke, James (Lorna) Urch, all of Drumheller, and Douglas Urch of Calgary. He will also be missed by his 15 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. The family would like to thank the Drumheller Continuing Care Centre’s caring staff for the excellent care given to Charlie. Charlie was an honorary member of the Anglican Church, a member of the Drumheller Masonic Lodge (#146) and a founding member of the Big Country Antique and Classic Auto Club. A Memorial Service for Charlie will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 13:00 at the FELLOWSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH in Drumheller, Alberta (226 – 2nd Street West). GILES -- Arthur William Eric March 4, 1927 - January 17, 2008
Arthur William Eric Giles has gone to be with his Lord following a courageous battle with cancer. Survived by his special friend and adventurer, Flo Nygaard. His sons Eric Giles, Kimberley, BC and Alex (Dorothy) Clark, Victoria, BC and Daughters Marilyn Hogan, Wesbank, BC and Elaine (Richard) Johnston, Drumheller, AB and daughter in-law Collen Giles, Lethbridge, AB. Grandchildren -- Kevin, Colin and Coryn Giles, Kimberley, BC, Michael (Tdi) Clark, Victoria, BC, Cary Hogan, Nelson, BC, Robert Johnston, Kelowna, BC, Arlene Johnston (Trevor Scott) Red Deer, AB, Donald Johnston, Drumheller, AB, Sean Dwayne, Cory (Renee) Giles and Mathew Giles, Lethbridge, AB, Great Grandchildren Paige, Tifany, and Calvin Clark, Ethan and Dalen Scott, Anna and Mark Johnston, Jace Johnston and Prisea Giles. His brother Glen (Rosemary) Giles, Cranbrook, BC and sister Yvonne (Andy) Renaud, Cranbrook, BC. Numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his first wife Frieda Giles, his second wife of 52 years, Iris Giles (2002), his son William Charles Giles (March 2007), his parents Albert John Giles (1982) and Lilian May Giles (1991). Art was born in Lethbridge, AB and moved with his parents to Kimberley BC in 1937. He attended school in both Lethbridge and Kimberley. He worked as a mechanics helper for Frank Shaw and as a diamond driller for T-Connor Diamond Drilling before entering the Army. After receiving an honourable discharge at the end of World War II, he returned to Kimberley, BC and worked as a baker and a grocer for several years and then for Cominco (now Tech Corp.) until his retirement in 1985. Art was devoted parishioner of All Saints Anglican Church and spent many years as both peoples and rectors warden as well as being on the deanery executive. He oversaw many church camps at Edwards Lake, building and repairing cabins and being on camp committees. He was a member of the Marysville fire department, the Moose Lodge, the Steel Workers Union and Past President of S.O.A.R., Steel Workers of America Retirees, Kimberly Branch of B.C. Wildlife Federation, acted as the parish handy man and assisted with the food bank. Art loved camping, fishing, hunting and huckleberry picking. He was a noted baker, (especially well known for his shortbread). In his later years he played crib and attended many a senior’s dance, even though he always claimed to be “tone deaf”. Arthur will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all his family, extended families and many, many loving friends. In lieu of of flowers, you may make donations to the charity of your choice.
Hodgson -- Gordon Eric May 18, 1937 - January 16, 2008
Gordon Hodgson was born in Drumheller on May 18, 1937 and passed away on January 16, 2008 in Brooks, Alberta. Gordon was born to Eric and Blanche Hodgson of Dorothy, Alberta. Gordie worked in the mines at East Coulee, driving Shetland Ponies, then moved to Hanna to work with Special Areas building roads. This is where he met and married Shirley White in 1960. Jim was born in Hanna in 1961, with Murray coming in 1962. The family then moved to Dorothy and this was when Harry came in 1964 in Drumheller. They then moved to Hussar where Gordie worked for Armsco Oilfield Construction, soon to start with Pan Canadian. Wendy was born in 1967 in Bassano, with Larry coming in 1969 in Drumheller. Gordie worked for Pan Canadian until 1992, then retiring to Dorothy. He then married Pat and moved to Drumheller until 2006, and then moved to the Bassano Lodge and in 2007 was moved to Brooks. Gordie’s highlights of his life were his love for Rodeo; he went to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas for 10 years. He also almost never missed the Handhills, Strathmore and Hussar Rodeos. Gordie will be greatly missed by his family; Jim (Joanne); Eric, Coleman, and Chrissy of Drumheller; Harry (Tammy), Angelina, Andrew of Cochrane, Wendy (Mark), Matthew and Tyson of Calgary; mother, Blanche Hodgson of Dorothy, sister, Ethel (John Davies) of Rosedale, Don (Dixie) of Olds, Doug of Dorothy. Also numerous nieces and nephews. Gordie was predeceased by his son Murray in 1984, son Larry in 1996 and his Father Eric in 1995. A Memorial Service for Gordie will be held from Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. with Harold Hunter officiating. Raugust -- Frieda Marie (Hiebert)
We are saddened to announce the passing of Frieda Raugust at the age of 70 years, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was called home on January 15, 2008 after a lengthy illness and five month stay at the Drumheller Hospital. Frieda was born in Bassano, AB on May 15, 1937 to Abram and Annie Hiebert. She grew up and attended school in Gem, AB. In later years she graduated as an LPN from the University of Calgary. She worked for several years at the Hanna Hospital before marrying Melvin Raugust on November 6, 1965. After marriage, she continued working while raising a family. Once their family was complete, Frieda left the Hanna Hospital and began her career at the Palliser Nursing Home where she stayed until retirement. Frieda and Melvin took over the family farm where she lived and contributed to the everyday operations of a grain and cattle farm. She spent many hours helping out where needed -- driving truck, making lunches, and running to town for parts. Frieda had many interests that kept her busy throughout her years. As a young girl, her main interest was horses which carried on until her passing. She loved competing and showing her older brothers that not only could she keep up with them but leave them behind in her dust! In her later years, Frieda thrived on her career. How she loved working with the seniors and always came home from her shift with a bounce in her step and a smile on her face. After retirement her interests focused on her children and grandchildren. Frieda is survived by her husband of 42 years, Melvin Raugust; five children and 11 grandchildren -- Patricia (Allan) Broom and their children Jordyn, James and Jacob; Pamela (Lawrence) Guilloux and Taelyr and Brock; Tracy (Michael Heysa) and Shianne, Cooper and Easton; Dean (Connie) Raugust and Reo and Sierra; Bonnie (Lance) Farwell and Shaylen. Also survived by brothers Abe (Esther) Hiebert; Dave (Katie) Hiebert; Con (Ada) Hiebert; and Ben (Darlene) Hiebert; and sisters Helen (George) Enns and Kay (Helmut) Kreksch. Predeceased by parents Abram and Annie, older sister Elizabeth, and her sister Anne Peters who went to Heaven’s Gate just one day before Frieda. A Celebration of Life was held on Monday, January 21, 2008 at the Hand Hills Lake Clubhouse with Pastor James Clark officiating. Internment was at the Hanna Cemetery. On January 25, 2008, Mrs. Helen Olinek of Carmenguay, formerly of Rosedale, passed away at the age of 94 years. She is survived by one son & four daughters, Michael (Hazel) of Edmonton; Lorraine (John) Copeland of High River, Bernice (Peter) Rachinski of Penticton, B.C., Joanne (John) Humphrey of Qualicum Beach, B.C. & Judy (Steve) Rowe of Penticton, B.C.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother & one sister, Michael Kostiuk of Spruce Grove & Lena Teminsky of Edmonton; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Kostiuk of Ottawa, ON; brother-in-law, George Teminsky of Leduc; & numerous nieces & nephews. SCARLETT -- Caroline Mae
Caroline passed away suddenly on January 6, 2008 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary at the age of 50. She is survived by her loving husband Les and her children Chris (Karen), Tina (Chris) and Marsha and her grandchilden Chaz, Ethan & Bradie. She will be sorely missed by her remaining family. THOMPSON -- Samuel Madison April 6, 1911 - January 25, 2008
Samuel Thompson passed away peacefully Friday January 25, 2008 at the age of 96 years, at the Continuing Care Facility in Drumheller, Alberta, with family at his side. He is survived by his wife Viola (Hewson) and children, Sandra (Butch) Walters, Gordon (Dawn) Thompson, Margaret (Frank) Lewis, Bruce (Julie) Thompson, Don (Kathy) Thompson, Brenda (David) Daly and William (Gwen) Thompson. Samuel is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, five step children, family and friends. Samuel was pre-deceased by his first wife Ruth, son Robert, brothers Jim and Cecil, and sister Grace and numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Sam was born on April 6, 1911, at the family home, near Victor Hall, north of Delia. He was the second son and was named after his father, so he became known as Sammie, or Sam. Jr. As a young man, he purchased the Diegel farm located one mile north of Surprise School. On March 22, 1944 he married Ruth Margaret Bates, and together they raised seven children -- Sandra, Gordon, Margaret, Bruce, Don, Brenda and Bill. Sam enjoyed farming until the sudden death of Ruth in April of 1979. He then retired to Drumheller and his son, Donald, took over Madison Farms. He married Viola Hewson in 1981, and then travelled extensively around the world visiting Hawaii, Europe, Australia, and the Panama Canal. They also enjoyed trips in their motor home to various locations in Canada and the United States. Sam and Viola enjoyed almost 25 years of marriage. Four years ago, Sam’s body and mind began to fail, and he became a resident of the Continuing Care Facility in Drumheller. The family was told that Sammie was a favorite of the staff, and he received excellent care. Sam enjoyed playing cards, gardening, the music of Johnny Cash and Bobby Hoy, singing in the choir, ice cream of any flavor, fruit (Saskatoons, grapes, and watermelon were his favorites,) attending church, a good argument, a good joke, and visiting with families and friends (even people he didn’t know). All these traits have been passed along to the next generation, especially the love of ice cream and the good argument. Sam raised Purebred Aberdeen Angus cattle for many years. He and his brother, Jim travelled to many bull sale in Calgary, Stettler, Lacombe, Cereal and numerous other towns in Alberta. He took great pride in his herd and cared for them very well. Sam always said that Jim grew the cattle, and he grew the grain. But Jim also said that if he needed to know anything he could ask Sam as he had the great memory. Sam also was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Craigmyle for many years, and enjoyed serving in different positions. He was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. After attending the Passion Play in Europe, he came home determined to support a Passion Play in Drumheller. He was very pleased to have his vision fulfilled. Sam and Viola were also strong supporters of the Rosebud Theatre. A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at the Delia United Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2008.
