DUMANCIC -- Mirko July 4, 1944 – April 5, 2008

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mirko at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer. Born on July 4, 1944 near Osijek, Croatia he immigrated to Canada in 1968 and settled in Calgary with his older brother Marjan. After working in construction for several years he moved his young family to Drumheller where he spent close to thirty years. Mirko and wife Karen then made their dreams come true and moved to the “bush” in central B.C. Mirko was a strong man and a straight shooter and will be dearly missed. He leaves behind, in Canada, wife Karen, son Ivo (Nicole and Xander), daughters Marija and Katarina, brother Marjan, niece Angela (Friso and Anna) and nephew Tom, in Germany brothers Nedeljko and Marko, in Croatia sisters Ana and Katica, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina sister Zora and brothers Jure and Zdenko and their families. A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Mario Basque on Friday, April 11 at 11 am at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 151 – 3rd St. W, in Drumheller. FRIESEN -- Angela Anna October 29, 1922 – April 8, 2008

Angela Anna Friesen, of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the age of 85 years. Angela is survived by her children and their spouses James and Johanna Friesen, Sheila Godin, Barbara and Dennis Wilson, and Murray Friesen; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and two sisters. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob (1979) and her son-in-law Ray Godin. GROSE -- Walter

Walter Riley Grose passed away surrounded by his family April 9, 2008 at Lethbridge Regional Hospital. He would have turned 88 years old in just a few days. Dad is survived by his beloved wife Ellen of Lethbridge married almost 65 years. He is also survived by his daughters; Mary Ellen Barnes (Ward) of Raymond, AB; Jackie Murray (Ross) of Redcliff, AB. Also surviving Dad are his brothers; Leo Grose (Ruth), Calgary, AB and Harvey Grose (Lona) of Redcliff, AB. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Heather Hay (Richard LeCain); Tammy Gresdal (Jim) of Lethbridge, AB; Leeann Wendt (Nathan) in Japan; Danielle Paul (Alvin); Patrick Riley McDaniel of Medicine Hat, AB. He was a member of the South Saskatchewan Regiment serving during WWII from 1942–46.

Dad was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #006 for 42 years consecutive service. He worked for CNR driving and delivering freight for over 40 years in Drumheller, AB.; his home for many years. Upon his retirement he & Mom enjoyed many winters in Yuma, AZ making many friends.He was passionate about his family and was devoted to his grandchildren & blessed with great grandchildren; Katie, Cass, Kianne & Carl Joe; Morgan who he lovingly called Tiger; Jennifer, Jordan & Marick; Darren, Abigail, Thomas & Murrie. Dad’s last days were spent in the company of his family. His nieces and nephews came from far and wide to share stories and time with him. He cherished their company. A Memorial Service will be held in Dad’s honor at 1:30 P.M., on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at MARTIN BROS. Lapohn -- Violet March 24, 1926 - April 3, 2008

Violet Annette (Schaeffer) Lapohn passed away peacefully on April 3, 2008 at the age of 82 years. Violet was born in Westuham, Sask. on March 24, 1926. She is survived by her sister Muriel Pickett of Vicksburg, Mississippi, son Bryan (Judy) Lapohn, daughter Colleen (Dale) Chambers. Violet was predeceased by her loving husband Carl. G.G. will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Jamie (Dustin) Crowther, Shelley (Jim) Jorgensen, Troy (Becky) Lapohn, Karla Chambers, Kelly (Shelagh) Edye, Sean Edye and her great grandchildren Alisha, Christian, Brae-Lynn, Ashley, Bradley, Leyton, Brandon, Darcie, Caleb, Corissa, Casandra.

BERLANDO -- Angelo September 12, 1926 - April 16, 2008

Angelo Berlando of Rosedale passed away peacefully on April 16, 2008 at the Drumheller Regional Health Complex. He is survived by his loving wife Maxine, her son Wayne, wife Mary and children Lauren and Matthew; her daughter Wendy, husband Sandy and Children Shaun, Michael and Stephen. Angelo is also survived by his brother Roger and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his father Eugene, mother Santina, sister Noemi, brother Jimmy and niece Brenda. Angelo was born in Drumheller and raised in Rosedale. Growing up, Angelo loved playing baseball, hockey and enjoyed skiing in the winter months. He also enjoyed building model airplanes, cars and ships. He was an ardent dog lover and had many beloved dogs over the years. In his later years he eventually became a cat lover and they became as beloved to him as his dogs. Angelo worked for a large paving contractor in Calgary. His work involved road and street construction and asphalt paving. He eventually rose to the position of foreman for the company. He moved back to the Drumheller Valley where he worked for FairEye Construction until his retirement in 1986. Angelo loved his work and put in many long hours each day. Angelo was a member of the 10 year Champion Rosedale Midways and truly enjoyed playing ball with all his buddies. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and taxidermy. Angelo enjoyed his annual trips to Great Falls with Maxine and their many trips to B.C. to spend time with his grandsons. Angelo’s grandsons were very special to him and he looked forward to the summer months when each of the boys came to visit. Angelo and the boys would spend many hours fishing, golfing, flying kites and going for long walks with the dog. Angelo had a great sense of humor and will be sadly missed by his many friends and family. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance or the charity of your choice.

Hendrey -- Sharon Rose (Sherry)

Beloved mother, sister, aunt and daughter passed away suddenly on April 13, 2008 in Calgary. Sherry was born in Drumheller and grew up in East Coulee. She attended Drumheller Composite High School and after graduation moved to Calgary. Sherry leaves to mourn her deeply, her son Tyler (Mandy) of Calgary, her partner of many years Frank Barron of Calgary, her sister Jane (Ron) Montgomery of East Coulee, her brother Gary (Lynn) and special niece Nikki Hendrey of Calgary and her father Nick Hendrey of East Coulee, nieces Tammi, Margie, Emily and Jessie, her nephews Jerry, David and Tyson along with many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Maudie, sister Margaret and two brothers Nicky and Johnny. Funeral services were held at the Calgary Crematorium Chapel, 3219 - 4 St. N.W., Calgary on Friday, April 18.

Jorgensen -- Agnes Mae (McConnell) February 18, 1910 - April 18, 2008

Death came as a friend to Mom at the Strathmore Health Centre on April 18, 2008 in her 99th year. Her passing will leave a huge void in the lives of those she touched. Mom was predeceased by our dad, Mads Jorgensen in 1988 and our brother Jim in 2005. Beloved mother of Phyllis (Bruce Burgess), Neil (Roz), JoAnn (Sandy Cunningham) and daughter in law Nancy (Jim), devoted Nana to her grandchildren, David, Heather, Tim, Robin, Chris, Shaun, MaryAnn, Scott and Lindsay, and her great-grandchildren, Gavin, Leah, Nicholas, Samantha, Avery, Sawyer and Danielle. As well, Mom was a much-loved “Aunt Mae” to many of her extended family. Mom’s love of travel, music, art, theatre, gardening and her quest for knowledge knew no bounds. Please join us in a celebration of the life of Mae Jorgensen at the Strathmore United Church, 410, 4 St. at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008. Flowers gratefully declined. POXON -- Leonard (Dusty) 1921 – 2008

Leonard Francis (Dusty) Poxon passed away at the Drumheller Hospital on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Dusty will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Sybil Poxon; son Larry (Arlene) Poxon; daughters Marsha (Ken) Schell and Marylou (Berwin) Best; grandchildren Angela Schell Nelson, David Schell (Tara), Kelsey Poxon, Billy Poxon (Kelsey Hoffos), Nickolas (Sandra) Best, Kristen Best; great grandchildren Kendrick Schell, Kai Nelson, Cole Archuleta, Morgan Schell, Tanner Schell, Braden Best and Colton Best. Leonard was predeceased by brother Dale Poxon. Dusty served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Bombardier during World War ll. After the war he worked with his father in the family business, the Farmer’s Exchange Department Store. In 1962 Sybil and Dusty bought the Farmer’s Exchange from his father and operated the store until 1972 when they sold the business. Dusty then went to work at the Correction Services of Canada in Drumheller until retirement. Dusty was an active member of the Carbon United Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, Master of Carbon Masonic Lodge, as well as Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District No. 15. Dusty lived in the Village of Carbon all his life and his commitment to the Carbon community was evident. He served many years on the Village Council including two terms as Mayor and was Carbon’s area representative for the Three Hills School Division. Dusty excelled at sports, always a competitor and willing to teach others. A Celebration of Dusty’s life will be held at the Carbon Community Hall on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to S.T.A.R.S., 1441 Aviation Park, N.E. Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2E 9Z9. Jungling -- Anna

Anna Jungling of Drumheller passed away peacefully in the Drumheller Hospital on April 29. 2008 at the age of ninety-two. Anna was born in Mariental, Russia on November 16, 1915, one of ten children born to Anna and Franz Isaac. The family emigrated to Canada in 1926 settling in Alberta. Anna married Raymond Jungling of the Orkney district on April 30, 1938. The two lived on the family farm in Orkney until Ray’s death in 1989. After Ray’s death, Anna moved to a house in Drumheller where she was able to finally indulge in her passion for flower gardening. Her yard was a showcase. Anna was a talented and creative homemaker and artist. She loved to cook, especially bake. Her breads, pies, cake and cookies were wonderful and she was kind enough to share them with friends, neighbors and family. Her gooseberry pies were especially prized by her children and grandchildren. Anna was an excellent seamstress often designing the clothes she made for her daughters. Everyone in the family was a grateful recipient of her beautiful patchwork quilts. In fact there were not many artistic endeavors that she did not try her hand at. Anna was predeceased by her husband Raymond in 1989, grandson Jamie in 1981 and son-in-law Grant Potter in 2004. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra (Wayne) Corbett of Saskatoon, Margot of Calgary and Debra (Dave Carter) of Drumheller, two grandsons, Myles Corbett of Edmonton and Joel (Helen Perry) Corbett of Saskatoon, and five great-grandchildren, Kevin, Mitchell, Kristen, Tayler, and Noah. She is also survived by two brothers, George (Marguerite) Isaac of Strathmore and John (Olga) of Victoria, B.C. and sister Mary of England. At Anna’s request there will be a private family interment of cremains and graveside service at Sarcee Butte Cemetery at a later date. Anna’s family would like to especially thank Dr. Graham and the staff of the long-term acute care wing for the loving care and attention that Mom received over the last month while she was in the hospital. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Palliative Care or long-term acute care wing of the Drumheller Hospital.

Kostenuk -- Dennis

The family of Dennis Kostenuk are sad to announce his passing on April 29, 2008 at the age of 62 years. Dennis is survived by his loving wife Mary; his children and grandchildren -- Terri (Glenn) Anderson, Taylor and Connor; Curtis Kostenuk, Spencer and Harris; Denise (Daniel) Jean, Olivia and Cooper; step children Leah and Ivan Gustafson; sisters Grace (Steve) Reid and Gladys (Doug) Bell; brother Leonard (Szi Szi) Kostenuk and many nieces and nephews. Dennis was predeceased by his mother Frieda and father John. Plachner -- David George May 3, 1942 - May 4, 2008

Dave Plachner of Morrin, Alberta passed away suddenly in the early morning hour on Sunday, May 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife Annette, two daughters Staci (Darrell) White, Sheri (Joe) Lowther and his greatest pride and joy his two granddaughters Brittany and Courtney and expected new arrival. Dave also leaves behind his step grandchildren Amanda (Reid) Swain, Sheldon White, (Kayla Lunitz) as well as many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his mother Polly Plachner (November 10, 1999) and father Alex Plachner (September 27, 1996). Dave was a man who loved spending time with his family; especially his two granddaughters anything from basketball games, teaching driving lessons to lending a listening ear. Dave was a man who touched the lives of everyone who knew him. “To my husband, my father, my papa, my uncle, nephew and friend, may you rest in the hands of God till we meet again. We love you.” Funeral service will be held at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home on Friday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Scharfl -- Tereasa Lynn May 18, 1968 to April 27, 2008

Terri passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her son, Shane and daughter-in-law, Rhonda, and granddaughter, Cassidy, in Fort McMurray; her parents, Alf and Marge Scharfl, her sister and brother-in-law, Tina and Myke Kwirant, and nephew, Andy, and niece, Madeline, and her brother, Dan, all of Drayton Valley; her paternal grandmother, Elda Scharfl of Drumheller; her paternal uncles and aunts, Ralph Scharfl of Fort McMurray, Laraine Combs of Lloydminister, Wilfred Scharfl of Peachland, BC, Rudy (Marie) Scharfl, Carol Ross, Louis Scharfl, Keith Scharfl of Calgary, Ken Scharfl (Ruth) of Grande Prairie, Vivian (Cliff) Dietz of East Coulee, Louise (Tom) Diprose of Drumheller, Lynda Heitrich of Etzicom, Denise Hawranik, of Oakville, On; and, her maternal uncles and aunts, George (Sharon) Cairns of Devon, Jim Cairns, Irvin Cairns (Cindy) of Rosedale, Chris Cairns (Val), of Drumheller, and Linda Cairns (Mike) of Westlock and many cousins. She was pre-deceased by her maternal grandparents, Dan and Helen Cairns, and her paternal grandfather, Alfred Scharfl, all of Drumheller. Terri was an awesome, caring person who will never be far from our hearts. Terri made us all proud by steping outside the box and becoming a journeyman electrician. She was good at her job and loved being ‘one of the boys’ while at the same time being a mom, grandma ‘Namma’, sister and daughter. Her greatest joy was her granddaughter, Cassidy. Terri will be missed greatly by her family and many friends. A memorial will be held at the Golden Years Society in Fort McMurray on Saturday, May 10 at 11am. Robert Anderson Funeral Services is in charge of cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Cross Cancer Clinic would be appreciated.

Smith -- John

John Smith passed away May 2, 2008 at Drumheller, AB at the age of 95 years. John was born August 28, 1912 in Scotland to Joseph and Susan Smith. At a young age, along with his family, John came to Canada, first settling in the Beadle district of Sask. and then moving to Drumheller, AB around 1919. John met his life-long love Lillian Lyster in Munson, AB and married in 1938 moving to Calgary. In 1940 John signed up for an army ordinance crew and served in WWII. Together with his wife Lillian, he worked in the grocery business in Calgary until 1974 when they retired to Munson, AB and enjoyed many years travelling and taking part in senior activities. John was predeceased by his wife Lillian in 2004, sisters Mary Sangster and Janet Whittle, brothers Arthur, Robert, Brian, Bill and Joseph. Left to sadly mourn are daughters Susan Antichow (Monty) of Bellsite, MB and Sandra Antichow (Garry) of Lenswood, MB, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, sister Pearl Sibbald of Leduc, AB, sister-in-law Ada Smith of Calgary, AB, sister-in-law Jean Dewsbury of Drumheller, AB, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CNIB. Funeral services will be held from Knox United Church on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Courtney-Winters Funeral Chapel entrusted with arrangements (403) 823-2666.
