KOBE -- Melinda
It is with great sadness, but also a sense of joy that we announce the passing from this world of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Melinda Kobe on June 15, 2008, at the age of 96. We feel sadness for our loss, but great joy for her, as she has been freed from the difficulties of the this world and is now in the presence of her Heavenly Father. Melinda was born June 8,1912 in Laird, Saskatchewan to Elizabeth and Justice Koenig. She was an amazing lady, raising seven children and always being there for them. She was a skilled seamstress, making most of the clothes, when the children were young, plus her own. She had many talents such as building kitchen cupboards and table, and other furnishings during her younger years. She continued to make her own clothes and many quilts for her family and missionaries from around the world, as well as for the Women’s Shelter in Calgary up until about five years ago. She was a member of the Church of The Nazarene for over 50 years, serving her church and her God throughout her life. She was a virtuous women giving generously to multiple charities for the betterment of children in need around the world. Melinda leaves to mourn her children, Charlotte (Dick) Seth, Wayne (Betty) Kobe, Kathy (Don) Vickers, Dennis Kobe, Millie (Chuck) Sibbald and Brian (Anne) Kobe. Grandchildren Cory Hutchinson, Valen, Tom, Boyd, Trevor Kobe, Dave Vickers, and Jill Philis, Kelly, Dan and Scott Kobe, Tammy Curial, Marc Kobe, Jody Bialowas, Jacie Bradshaw and Chanelle Kobe, Ryan and Andrew Sibbald, Brett and Kevin Kobe and 20 great-grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Kris Kobe, son Terry Kobe, husband Carl Kobe and one brother and five sisters. A funeral service will be held for Melinda at the Church of the Nazarene in Drumheller on Friday, June 20, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor James Clark officiating. Interment will take place at the Drumheller Cemetery following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Sunshine Lodge or the Palliative Care Unit at the Drumheller Health Centre.
KUCHER -- Douglas Grant September 13, 1959 - June 12, 2008
Doug Kucher passed away suddenly in Drumheller, Alberta on June 12, 2008 at the age of 48 years. He is survived by his wife Kris, his two sons Grant, Melissa and Amilyn; and Gregory and Jodi and his parents Alex and Kate Kucher of Vilna, AB and Murray and Doreen McLellan of Drumheller, AB; one sister - Patricia Kenyon and Gary Schauer of Kelowna, BC, Colleen, Richard, CJ, Joey, Zoey and Mia Hatt of Ontario and Michael Kenyon of Edmonton, AB; and three brothers - Ron, Judy and Dayna Kucher of Saskatoon, SK; Ken and Gretchen Kucher of Seattle, Washington; Allan, Donna, Markus, Amber and Teegan Kucher of Kelowna, BC; and three brothers-in-law - Kerry, Pam and Kenneth McLellan and Alyssa, Brooklyn, and Lexia Christensen; Kevin, Brenda, Joelle, Kevin Jr., Konway, Blake and Braden McLellan; Jennifer, Matthew, Ella and Easton Andrew; Kent, Twyla, Christopher, Kyle, Daniel and Angela of Drumheller. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Robert Kim McLellan of Drumheller in 1997. Doug was born in Edmonton and raised in Vilna, AB. The family then moved to Kelowna where Doug completed his education. Upon completing high school, Doug moved to Drumheller where he met the love of his life. He worked for Alberta Transportation before taking a job at Hi-Way 9 and later at the Drumheller Institution where he was still employed at the time of his death. Doug and Kris were married June 18, 1983 and had two sons - Grant in 1984 and Gregory in 1985 - and raised their family in Drumheller. They celebrated the arrival of their first grandchild, Amilyn, in January 2007 and Doug considered her to be his special angel on whom the sun rose and set. They are expecting their second grandchild in early August. The funeral service will be Thursday, June 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stampede & Ag. Society building (Dinosaur Downs). Doig -- Gudrin Elida (nee Larson) August 20, 1916 - June 18, 2008
Elida Gudrin Doig (nee Larson) passed away peacefully on June 18, 2008 at the age of 91 years. Elida was born on August 20, 1916 at Youngstown, AB to parents Ludwig and Emma Larson. She was the fifth of six children. She married Howard Doig on July 6, 1938 and had four sons -- Harold, Dennis, James, and Larry. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and visiting with her extended family and neighbours. The family initially farmed south of Youngstown, and then moved to a farm northwest of Sheerness, AB. They retired in Hanna in 1961. Elida and Howard enjoyed visits with their family, particularly with grandchildren Jodi, Glen, Rod, Ron, Leona, and Mark. Elida resided at the Hanna Nursing Home for more than twenty years. She was a pleasant and cheerful lady who always had a smile for anyone who dropped by for a visit, and hugs and kisses for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed chatting with the staff, having coffee and sweets, playing bingo and participating in various activities hosted by the recreation therapists. She especially enjoyed singing hymns, and during the last moments of her life was singing one of her favourites, “Jesus Loves Me”. Elida was predeceased by her father Ludwig (1971), mother Emma (1975), husband Howard (1987), son Dennis (2001), her brothers Haaken, Ernest, Louis, her sisters Lillian and Margaret, and her brother-in-law Ainer Anderson. She is survived by her sons Harold, Jim, Larry; brother-in-law Norman Wick; grandchildren Jodi (Gerald), Glen, Rod (Kandace), Ron (Leanne); Leona (Arvind); Mark (Angela); great-grandchildren Jerilyn, Jeff, Ryan, Regan, Ryley, Kiersten, Kieran, Dylan, Brianna, Brittany and Justin; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the First United Church on Friday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. with lunch to follow. Forhmzway -- Dorothy Ann (nee Robb) 1944-2008
Dorothy Ann passed away at the Drumheller Hospital on Sunday, June 15, 2008, following a lengthy illness. She was born in London, England in 1944, the daughter of Samuel and Phyllis Robb. She, her mother and brother David united with Sam Robb in Drumheller in 1946. She was raised in Drumheller along with other brothers Jim and Clive, and completed her schooling here. Following school she moved to Calgary where she married and had three children who survive her -- Lawrence, Sharina and Maureen. During her time in Calgary she published two books and appeared as a guest on numerous television and radio programs. She returned to Drumheller a few years ago, and was always happy to greet her many longtime friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Church at 242 1st street west, Drumheller, Alberta. Light refreshments will follow. All who knew Dorothy Ann are welcome to attend.
Hansen -- Isabella Caldwell June 14, 1925 - May 29, 2008
Isabella Caldwell Hansen passed away in the Drumheller Hospital on May 29, 2008. Isabell was born and raised in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. She attended a girls private school in Kilmarnock and during World War II she enlisted with the Royal Air Force, W.A.A.F., Aircraft and general duties. She met a Canadian Soldier Lewis Peter “Bud” Hansen from Rosedale, AB who was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. from 1939 - 1945. They were married April 28, 1945 in Kilmarnock, Scotland. As a war bride Isabell travelled to Canada October 4, 1945 by ship to Halifax, NS and then by train to Drumheller, AB to meet with her husband. Isabell and Buds’ first home was in Rosedale, AB and they moved to Drumheller during the 1948 flood and settled in Drumheller for the duration of her years. Many people will remember the little Scot Lady “Issie” from working in Wades Jewellery Store for many years. She loved getting together for a coffee with friends and visiting grandchildren and family. Isabell is survived by a brother in Scotland, sister in Australia, daughter Betty in Morrin, son Donald of Calgary, six grandchildrenand 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Bud Hansen on March 26, 1990, mother and father and one brother in Scotland.
Hansen -- Troy Jeffrey
Troy Jeffrey Hansen was born on November 28, 1970 in Hanna, Alberta; the second son of Stan and Pat Hansen. Troy passed away suddenly on June 9, 2008 near Delia, Alberta. He is survived by his parents Stan and Pat, his brothers Jason, Steve and his sister-in-law Melanie, nephew Tanner and niece Olivia, his grandparents Dave and Betty Nixon of Byemoor, his aunts and uncles Wayne and Loree Nixon, Dale and Carol Nixon, Linda and Larry Norlie, Wanda and Don Wilkie, Terry and Anne Nixon, Dave and Lynne Nixon, May and Bob Bamber, Loretta and Clarence Stabler, many cousins, and many friends, A celebration of Troy’s life was held at the Delia Community Hall on June 14, 2008. He will be laid to rest with his grandpa and grandma Hansen at the Craigmyle Cemetery. If so desired, donations may be made in Troy’s name to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary in recognition of Troy’s love for children.
Lewis -- Rose September 28, 1932 - June 14, 2008
Rose Lewis passed away June 14, 2008 in Spirit River at the age of 75. Rose was predeceased by her husband Bill and baby girl Wendy. Mom leaves to mourn her daughters Kathy, Susie (Vern Larsen) and Linda (Darcy Brost), and sons Bob (Charlotte), Bill (Barb), Patrick (Georgi) and Stephen (Tamara). Grandma Rose will be greatly missed by Jodi, Bob, Brett, Catey, Corey, Billy, Ashleigh, Chase, Glenda, Stephen, Karey, Amy, Lexi, Trevor, Kelsey, Marissa, Nicholas and Linnaea; as well as Great Grandchildren Drew, Kate, Heather, Emma, Connor, Declan, Paige, Christina and Billy. Rose was predeceased by her parents Wilfrid and Margaret Cunningham and by brothers -- Norman, Russel, Wilfrid, Sam, and Jim and sisters -- Mae, Rita, Grace, Doris and Faye. She is survived by -- Florence, Ruby, LaRaine, Anne, special brother Earl and sister Donna, brothers-in-law Peter and Alex and sisters-in-law Marjorie and Judy as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rose was born in Grouard, Alberta on September 28, 1932 and was raised in Faust until her family moved to the Drumheller Valley where she completed her school years. Rose spent a brief time in Vancouver as a young lady, but returned to the Valley and started her family with Bill. Although times were not always easy, Rose persevered and loved raising her children, as well as opening her home to others. There might not have been material things, but you could always count on being welcomed and fed in Rose’s house. Rose enjoyed playing softball in her younger years, but loved cheering her Grandchildren on in their various sports in her later years. Having a cup of tea and game of crib was one of her favorite pastimes; but these were just a means to her true passion of just visiting with friends or family at her kitchen table. Rose moved into the Maple Ridge Manor in 2005. She truly enjoyed being close to the many friends she had known over the years. Mom volunteered at the Pioneer Centre with various activities, but her favourite was to help make toast on Saturday mornings. In the last months of her life Mom spent time with her children as she convalesced from cancer treatments. The grandchildren had the distinct privilege of living with Grandma, but they soon found out she was tougher than Mom and Dad when it came to homework. Mom was generous to all she met and she didn’t have much at the end because she always felt someone else needed it more. But those who knew her are all the richer as Mom epitomized how generous a soul can be. We love you forever Mom. A memorial to Mom will be held at the Rosedale Community Hall on July 3rd at 1 pm. Please join family and friends to share some memories over refreshments. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Montgomery -- Ronald Vance
It is with deep sadness that the family of Ronald Vance Montgomery announce his passing on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the age of 52 years. A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Morrin Community Hall, Morrin, Alberta, a time of fellowship and reflection will follow the service also in the Hall. A private family interment will follow at a later date. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Miracle Network. Nielsen -- Olav (Ollie) Holm
Olav (Ollie) Holm Nielsen, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years. Ollie is survived by Eva, his loving wife of 58 years; his children Miles (Donna-Lee), Mike (Joanne) and Melanie (Charles); his grandchildren Joel, Courtland, Shelby, Christopher (Miles), Michelle (Mike) and Cole (Melanie); his sisters Helene, Ingrid, Marie and daughter-in-law Agnes. He was scrupulously honest, mischievious, and an enthusiastic Aggravation player. Born in Standard, Alberta, Ollie worked as a coal miner in Drumheller and Grand Cache, and farmed in Bassano and Byemoor. His advice on farming was always sought out, even years after he retired. He retired in Delia, and was a member of the Delia Legion. Ollie very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and always looked forward to their extended visits. He was a cowboy at heart who loved horses and the open range. If you knew Ollie, you loved and trusted him. He will be missed terribly. Braunberger -- Warren Lee
It is with very sad hearts that we announce the passing of Warren Lee Braunberger of Tagish, YT at the age of 44 years. He is survived by his loving parents, Roy and Carol Braunberger, sister Sheryl Berry, brother-in-law Cal and a very special niece Jesse. He is also survived by twenty- eight cousins, several aunts and uncles and many long time friends who touched his life in so many ways. Warren was predeceased by his very best canine friend “Princess”. Warren was born in Drumheller, Alberta on October 5, 1963. Through a series of family moves Warren attended Elementary School in Prince Rupert and finished Junior High School in Golden, B.C. He attended Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School graduating in 1981. He furthered his education at SAIT where he obtained his Power Engineering certificate as well as his 2nd class steam ticket and part of his first. He then went to work for Shell Canada in Bowden and spent a short time in their Calgary office working on the Caroline project. Warren, in growing up was an avid competitor in basketball, badminton, hockey, baseball, golf, track and field and loved to fish and water ski for fun. He even endured a short history of piano lessons and played the trombone as his compromise to piano lessons. He later took up car racing, hunting and mud bogging. His passion for animals and the outdoors began with his involvement in Boy Scouts as a youngster. As an adult he developed a keen interest in wildlife photography of which many of his most treasured photos will be cherished by his family forever. In the early 1990’s he moved to the Yukon and purchased an acreage later known as “Lucky Acres” and lived the life he had dreamed of as a young boy. Some of his northern adventures included photographing the Yukon Quest dogsled races and later raised his own dogsled team.. His acreage became home to small hobby farm projects such as chickens, pigs and crops of which he handled entirely on his own making it known that his disabilities would never hold him back. He was an active member of the Tagish community being on the community board, was a member of the volunteer fire department and as a patriotic Canadian he felt compelled to run for a seat as an independent for the Yukon Territory federal campaign. In all of Warren’s travels and adventures he met many new wonderful friends. He had a special gift of being able to communicate with the very young to the elderly. He had great determination, a sense of humour and an overwhelming kindness towards other people. Madill -- Gordon
Mr. Gordon Madill (Gord) of Carbon, Alberta born in Regina, Saskatchewan, peacefully passed with a difficult battle of heart disease and cancer on July 4, 2008.
Gordon was predeceased by his wife Olive Madill in 1995, after almost 50 years of marriage. Gord was as strong as any man half his age of 84. He remained strong right to the fatal end. For Gordon, giving up was never an option at anytime during his long and hard fought life. His strength through all his hard times has been passed on to his four children, Norman Madill (Donna) of Calgary, Alberta who took on Gord’s love of heavy equipment in logging, farming and construction work. He continues to work in this industry today after some 45 years since Gordon first sat him on a tractor. His first daughter, Shirley Griggs (Wayne) of Morinville, Alberta, who sadly away June on 1998, also took on Gord’s love of hard work and never say quit attitude. Gordon’s second daughter, Sharon Mimura (Wayne) of Fort McMurray, Alberta, whose laughter in the face of hard times makes anyone who knows her stronger and more capable of their own situations. Her coolness under pressure is truly a gift from Gordon. Finally, Gordon’s second son, Larry Madill (Wendy) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, took on Gord’s love of the highway. Larry most likely logged a half a million miles with Gord before the age of 18. Gordon loved the road, the pressure, the lonely miles and the hard work in every mile and found pride in getting the job done at any cost to his well being to himself or his family. Yes, work did come first for Gord but he loved his family very much and never asked much of them. Just the freedom to let him do whatever he felt was necessary to make a living for his family. Gordon Madill will be sadly missed by everyone, his eight grandchildren, Ryan, Craig, Marcy, Billy, Crystal, Sterling, Quinton, Pierce, Justin, Jasmine and many friends and residents of Carbon. Funeral services will be held from the Carbon United Church on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial tributes may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Foundation. Arthur Kenneth Maxwell passed away June 22, 2008 at the age of 78. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
