Mrs. Shirley Eileen Tutt, beloved wife of Mr. Richard (Dick) Tutt of Coaldale, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the age of 71 years. Shirley served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1952 to 1955 and married Dick on April 30, 1955. She was much loved and loved much. Shirley was predeceased by a daughter, Rita Ann, on September 1, 1964. She is survived by her loving family: husband Dick, 2 sons George and Paul, 2 daughters Shirley and Judy, and her grandchildren. Mrs. Hilda Schulz (nee Tilsner)
Mrs. Hilda Schulz (nee Tilsner), beloved wife of the late Mr. Paul Schulz, passed away at the Coaldale Health Care Center on Wednesday, September 26, 2003 at the age of 86 years. She was born on October 31, 1916 in Germany. After surviving the Second World War, her family moved to Coaldale to start a new life. Coaldale was Hilda=s paradise and she had no desire to leave. Many will remember her for her beautiful crochet work. She is survived by two sons Klaus (Nick)(Elaine) and Jurgen (Joe)(Shaaron); two sisters in Germany; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and special friends Len and Loretta Coyne. She was predeceased by her husband Paul and one brother. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2006-20 Street, Coaldale with Rev. W. Gartke officiating. Handsaeme, Matthew Joseph
Handsaeme, Matthew Joseph beloved husband of the late Mrs. Elaine Handsaeme, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at the Edith Cavell Care Centre in Lethbridge at the age of 81 years. He was born May 14, 1922 in Raymond, Alberta, and spend most of his life farming. He spent several years in Terrace in the Army, and later in life learned to enjoy wood working, making toys for needy kids and his grandchildren. He had the first dairy cow to produce 100 pounds per day. He coached hockey, basketball and ringette. He was also a 4-H leader. He was involved with the Whoop Up Saddle Club and the Golden Age Horse Club. He and Elaine also enjoyed square dancing. Matt is predeceased by his beloved wife Elaine Handsaeme and survived by his children: Betty Snyder, daughters Michelle (Darcy) Welsh and Tina (Peter) Watkins; Bob (Nola) Handsaeme, sons Greg (Lana) and Alley his great-granddaughter, and Brad (Sheri); Jerry (Lis) Handsaeme, sons Shane and Scott; Bill (Peg) Handsaeme, children Cindy (Paul) Aback and Jeff (Kara); Jack (Sherry) Handsaeme, children Kristin, Rikki, Jennifer and Danielle; Mark (Brenda) Handsaeme, children Richard (Heather) and his great-granddaughter Sheridan, daughter Kriss and his great-grandson Paris, and son Brandon; Mary-Ann (Don) Wehlage, children Kimberly and Colin Thompson; Clair (Carolyn) Handsaeme, children Mathew and Carly; Carol-Lynn (Dave) Harker, sons Tyler and Eric; a sister Ann (Frank) Dixon-Bruder; sisters-in-law Joan Boulton and family, and Maxine Stephens and family, sisters-in-law Doreen Handsaeme and Loleita Handsaeme, and numerous nieces and nephews. Matt was predeceased by his father and mother Auguste and Isabella Handsaeme, two brothers Sam Handsaeme and Ed Handsaeme, and brothers-in-law Fred Dixon, Tom Boulton and Jack Stephens. Janzen, Agnes
On November 20, 2003, one of God’s great soldiers was granted her final reward. Agnes Janzen (nee Sawatzky) was recalled from active duty after over 90 years of service to her Lord, her families, and innumerable friends. Born in Osterwick, Ukraine, to a Mennonite family on March 5, 1913, Agnes lived through WWI, and through famines and plagues. On March 18, 1935, Agnes married Friedrich Mensch. With the outbreak of WWII, she became a refugee and the sole protector and defender of her family during the war years, arriving in Canada in 1948. After Friedrich’s death on May 13, 1963, she became a close friend and valued employee for a number of families in Lethbridge, and then married George Janzen from Abbotsford in 1977, becoming a stalwart member of another family. Agnes leaves to celebrate the richness of her life, her children, Art (Delores), Nick, Harry, Fred (Sunny), Willie (Joan), Vic (Gloria), and Elizabeth Byrne (John). She also leaves six siblings, John Sawatzky (Mabel), Helen Unger, George Sawatzky (Annie), Elisabeth Trampe (William), Corny Sawatzky (Agnes), and Lydia Dyck (Walter), as well as an extensive Janzen family to whom she has endeared herself in BC, and innumerable grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. She has been a truly remarkable individual, well-loved by all. A Family Graveside Service will be held on Friday, November 28, 2003 at 2:00 pm at the Coaldale Community Cemetery, followed by a Service of Remembrance at 3:00 pm at the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church, 2114-18 Street, Coaldale with Pastor Rudy Heidebrecht officiating. Stetar, Michael (Big Mike)
Stetar, Michael (Big Mike) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Coaldale Health Care Centre. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley, his son Robert (Mary-Anne) of Taber, and his daughters Dianne (Randy) Norsworthy of Barons, Charmaine (Kevin) Penner of Lethbridge, and Karen Stetar of Calgary. Mike will be missed by his grandchildren, Amanda Norsworthy, Pamella Norsworthy, Paul Norsworthy, Michael O’Connell, Cole Penner and Lucas Penner. Mike is also survived by his sisters Ethel Johnston and Margaret Ethier and his brother Andy Stetar. Mike was predeceased by his mother and father, his sisters Sophie and Annie, and his brother Steve. A private family graveside service will be held in Coaldale. Rose Margaret Nicolay
August 30 1914 - July 19 2004
Rose Nicolay passed away peacefully at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital on Monday July 19, 2004 at the age of 89 years. Rose was born to John and Annie Spooner, August 30, 1914 in St. Cloud Minnesota. Rose married Ernest Nicolay in Whitetail, Montana, October 24, 1934 and settled on a quarter section of land a mile from her father-in-laws farm in the Waniska District of Saskatchewan. They moved to Bow Island, Alberta in 1949. Rose was a homemaker but took time to become active in community activities. She was a charter member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion in Bow Island and an active member of the Catholic Women’s League at the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Michael. Following their move to Lethbridge, and subsequently Coaldale, she remained an active member of the Catholic Women’s League, but this time with the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Ambrose in Coaldale. She was later to be honored with a lifetime membership in the League. Rose is survived by her children, Larry (Onna), Beverley (Gerald) Kipp, Roma (Steve) Roth and Bonnie (Dwayne) Sturm; twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend, Ernest, her parents, John and Annie Spooner, brothers Joseph, Gerald, Al; and sisters Madge and Zita. Flowers are gratefully declined. Nikoleychuk, Clifford Fred of Lethbridge, born June 29, 1926 in Red Lake District of Saskatchewan, beloved husband of Erna, passed away on September 29, 2004. Besides his loving wife of 56 years, he leaves to mourn his loss two sons: Darwin (Linda) of Medicine Hat, and Delmer (Michelle) of Lethbridge; seven grandchildren and two great granddaughters; daughter-in-law Lydia; one brother Edward (Audrey); one sister Elsie and his mother-in-law Emilia. He was predeceased by his parents Steve and Lydia, his son Cecil in 1997, and two brothers Allen in infancy and Victor in 2003. No flowers by request. Wall, Robert David (Bob)
Wall, Robert David (Bob) beloved husband of Denise, of Stirling, passed away suddenly on September 28, 2004 at the age of 50. Bob was born on March 20, 1954 in Coaldale to Mary and George Wall. Bob was a wonderful husband, father, friend and farmer. Bob was a great outdoorsman who loved to hike and ski with his family and friends. He loved to travel and enjoyed riding horses and motorbikes. He was also a skilled log homebuilder. This off-farm job often took him overseas to pursue his love of creating handcrafted log homes. The family cabin he built near Burmis was a masterpiece and remains a sanctuary for family and friends. Bob is survived by his wife Denise (Twa); his children Emily, Jesse and Murray; his parents Mary and George Wall; his siblings Herb and Kristine (Carlsen) Wall, Eleanor and Jake Willms, Gordon and Connie (Dyck) Wall, and Les and Lisa (Wiebe) Wall; and numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Bob was predeceased by his grandparents, David and Maria Penner and Cornelius and Helena Wall. A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Coaldale Mennonite Church, 2316-17 Street, Coaldale at 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 2, 2004 with Pastor Ruth Preston Schilk officiating. Mrs. Florence M. McCray (nee Gordon)
Mrs. Florence M. McCray (nee Gordon), beloved wife of the late Lawrie McCray, passed away at the Coaldale Health Centre on December 5, 2004 at the age of 71 years. She is survived by her children Allan (Luanne) and their son Stephen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Scott (Pat) and their children Bailey and Miles of Bow Island; and Glenn and his son Cayden of Lethbridge. Florence was married to Lawrie McCray for 44 years and missed him dearly after his death in 2001. She was born in Drumheller and lived with her cousins on the farm near Halkirk, Alberta. As a young girl she worked on the farm until she found a job in Castor, Alberta working in the Bank of Montreal. This is where she met Lawrie, who was the manager at the time. Raising three boys, she stayed at home while the bank moved the family through several Alberta towns. In 1970, the family’s last move was to Coaldale where she was very active in the community. She was involved for many years with the Ladies Auxiliary to the Coaldale Hospital often volunteering to work in the tuck shop. She also supported Lawrie in his service with the volunteer fire department. Her interests included gardening, needle work and walking. She will be sadly missed. Wannop, Hazel (McBride)
Wannop, Hazel (McBride) passed away in Raymond, Alberta on January 18, 2005 at the age of 82 years. She leaves behind her children; Alan (Barbara), JoAnn (Don) Peach, David (Lourdes), Don (Dawnetta), Marie (Dennis) Mertz, Linda, Carol (Chris) Avery, Pat (Dan) Reid, Roberta (Chris) Norton, Jane ( John) Nash, 36 Grandchildren, and 42 Greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Margaret (Wayne) Conrad, Mildred Fawns, Beth Bridge, Aneta (Gordon) Heggie, and Ladene (Robert) Wilde. She was predeaceased by her husband, Lawrence Edgar Wannop, her parents, Ira and Fannie McBride, her son, George Douglas Wannop, and a grandson, Brennon Max Wannop. She was raised in Welling, then Raymond. After high school she worked at the local telephone office where she worked her way up to chief operator. In 1947 she served a mission for The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the East Central States Mission headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after her mission she worked again as a telephone operator in Nanton, Alberta. There she met her future husband, Lawrence Wannop, who owned and operated a tire shop. They were married on October 12, 1949. They lived their entire married life in Nanton where they raised their ten children until Larry’s passing in 1964. In the spring of 1967 she returned to Raymond with her children. Hazel loved quilting and did many a quilt for her children, grandchildren and for people in the community. Hazel was an extremely compassionate person and lived her life according to the beliefs she held as a member of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many positions through the years and always tried to find opportunity to serve others. She loved her family and was especially proud of her children, her grandchildren and their accomplishments. She made life good for them all. She was always there when the kids came home from school. Later in her life she re-taught herself how to play the piano and found great joy therein. She would play for Home evenings at the Marigold Manor and the Lodge where she made many great associations. She will be dearly missed. Her teachings, example the skills she taught, and most especially her smile, and kind words will ever be engraved in the memories of her children and those she touched. We love you mom. Friends and family may meet at the Knight Street Chapel in Raymond, Alberta on January, 20 2005 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Friday January 21st. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 21st with Bishop Dwight Karren officiating. Internment will be at the Nanton Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Due to severe allergies, floral tributes are declined. Bernard (Barnie) Michael Wagner
Bernard (Barnie) Michael Wagner of Coaldale, Alberta was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan on May 18, 1935, and returned to his Lord in Lethbridge Hospital on Dec. 12, 2005 at the age of 70 years. Barnie was married to Helen (Keller) in 1959 and they had four wonderful sons; Melvyn, Donald, Max, and Richard. Barnie and Helen welcomed four beautiful women to their family as their sons married, and they were blessed with 12 fantastic grandchildren: Melvyn and Anita (Heffner) and their children Janine, Melanie, Alicia, Khaylia, Rochelle; Don and Julie (Cey) and their children Trevor (deceased), Kyle, and Jared; Max and Sharon (Young) and their children Chantal and Nicole; and Rick and Sue (Bowsher) and their children Dustin and Jessica. Barnie and Helen were also blessed with two great grandchildren, Zakary Hodgkinson and Kaliel Flett. Barnie was predeceased by his parents, Theresia (Fenrich) and Max Wagner of Wilkie, Saskatchewan. Barnie lived close to the land, farming and raising horses. He belonged to the Saskatchewan Pony Chuckwagon Association and along with his sons, he raced his ponies and relished in the thrill of competition. In addition, Barnie loved his curling. A Prayer Service will be held at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, 1513 - 23 Avenue, Coaldale on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at 7:30 pm with Deacon Ray Wagner officiating. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Church on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at 11:00 am with Father Tito Ranola, Celebrant. Cremation to follow.
