LARRY VIELLE
1962 - 2007
LARRY VIELLE from the Blood Reserve passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the age of 45 years.
During the summer on June 24, 1962 Larry was born to Alberta Vielle and the late Lawrence Eli. Larry brought joy and happiness to this wonderful couple.
Larry is survived by his sisters Sandra and Shirley (Gilbert), brother Robert (Betty), children; Jarvis (Shastina), Waylon and Ramona, grandchildren; Brandon, Paula, Lakota, Burton, Aaliaha, Alex, Karsen, Nathanial and Cyrus, aunts; Elsie Vielle, Janet Vielle, Marlise (Sonny) Vielle, Josephine Vielle, Alva Eli, Hazel Eagle Bear, Madeline Eli, Angeline Cress, Melva (Sidney) Black and Pauline Three Persons, uncle Martin (Elizabeth) Vielle, nieces and nephews; Lance, Jean (Desmond), Joan (John), Todd, Bert (Amanda), Darcie, Kelly, Carmen, Melissa and Danielle and Larry’s extended family including the Vielle’s, Eli’s, Crow Chief’s, Across the Mountain’s, Goodrider’s, Crow’s, Spear Chief’s and Wells and their families. The family wishes to apologize for any names we might have missed.
Larry was predeceased by his father Lawrence Eli (2003), grandparents Albert and Paula Vielle and Frank and Lucy Eli, uncles; Herman Vielle, Morris Vielle and Floyd Eli, aunts; Rita Vielle, Doreen Vielle, Isabelle Vielle, Mary Ann Eli and Viola Eli, granddaughter Cloey, his best friend Merlin (Bayduck) Chief Calf and Gloria Spear Chief.
During his last days, Larry was visiting with his mother Alberta, sister Sandra and nieces Kelly, Carmen, Danielle and Darcie. Larry, along with niece Kelly, were enjoying the World Series of baseball. This last precious visit will always be in our hearts and memory.
Larry was a free spirit, very adventurous and a good story teller. He had adopted families in the Standoff area which included Merlin (Bayduck) Chief Calf’s family and Eugene Blackwater’s family. Larry loved all his family and friends, especially the younger ones and was loved by all.
In his younger years, Larry excelled in sports, especially in the area of baseball in which he was the pitcher. He helped his team win the provincials in baseball and was coached by Ben Red Crow Sr. Larry and his friends use to swim in the river, go horseback riding, play baseball and go skating in the winter.
Larry’s education brought him to Standoff School, Fort Macleod, Granum, Yakima, Washington and Lethbridge programs. Larry was employed in Lethbridge until his back injury. Larry instilled the ethics of being a good worker in his son Jarvis. Larry lived in Lethbridge to be close to his children and grandchildren.
A Wake Service will be held at WHITE CALF CHAPEL, Standoff on Friday, November 2, 2007 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. continuing at Robert Vielle’s residence, Farm 4 area.
A Funeral Service will be held at WHITE CALF CHAPEL, Standoff on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Ben Marino officiating.
Interment to follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Blood Reserve.
JOHANNE VANEE
1932 - 2007

JOHANNES “JO” VANEE, beloved husband of Anneke “Anne” Vanee of Lethbridge, was taken to be with the Lord at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the age of 75 years.
Besides his loving wife Anne, Jo is survived by his children; Verna (Ken) Greidanus, Joyce (Ron) Sakamoto, Ron (Debbie) Vanee and Bonnie (Mike) Jarokosky, grandchildren Angela (Scott) Van’t Land, Erin, Bethany and Krista Greidanus, Jeremy (Robin) Sakamoto, Shawn (Carrie) Sakamoto, Sasha (Scott) Mahan, Jonas, Justin and Jordyn Vanee and Jennifer (Stephen Martyn), Shane and Tyler Jarokosky and his great grandchildren Noah, Caleb, Eden and Moriah Van’t Land, Parker and Quintin Sakamoto and Lachlan and Cadan Mahan.
He is also survived by his twelve brothers and sisters; Riek Van Driesten, John (Matty) Vanee, Tony (Dini) Vanee, Wilma (Bill) Van Driesten, Janet Vanee, Harry (Lorraine) Vanee, Greta (Dick) Beekman, Ed (Gwen) Vanee, Jeanette (Dick) Pols, Rita (Rick) Olsen, Hank (Marianne) Vanee and Jim (Wendy) Vanee, seven brothers and sisters-in-law; Bill (Nell) Ouwerkerk, Harriet (Bill) Van Waardhuizen, Tony (Corrie) Ouwerkerk, Irene (Wayne) Hollander, Cor Ouwerkerk, Maria Still and Alice Ouwerkerk as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jo was predeceased by his parents Reyer (1988) and Fennetje (1995) Vanee, infant brother Gerrit (1938) and brother-in-law Maas Van Driesten.
Jo was born on June 14, 1932 in Ede, Netherlands, the first born son of Reyer and Fennetje Vanee. The family immigrated to Canada in 1950 and then settled in Southern Alberta in 1951. Jo married Anneke Ouwerkerk on May 27, 1955 and they were blessed with the birth of four children.
A successful businessman, in 1960 Jo and his brothers ventured into their first business endeavour, Vanee Livestock Fort Macleod. They later expanded to Macleod Feed Mill, Vanee Farm Center, Vanee Livestock Lethbridge, Intercontinental Truck Body Ltd. and Lethbridge Stockyard. Jo also continued with his entrepreneurial pursuits with Central Truck Equipment Inc., Vanee GM and Vanee Motors (Volkswagon).
With a faith firmly rooted in the Lord’s gracious promises, Jo’s life was a testimony to those around him. He was a member of Bethel Free Reformed Church in Monarch. Jo was a congenial, social man with the uncanny ability to put all those around him at ease. Warm and loving, he was greatly respected and admired by family, friends and members of the community and will be deeply missed.

A Funeral Service will be held at TRINITY REFORMED CHURCH, 1100 – 40th Avenue North, Lethbridge on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 2:30 P.M. with Reverend Jerrold Lewis officiating.
A Private Family Interment will precede the Funeral Service at Mountain View Cemetery at 1:00 P.M.

MARIANNE VARE
2007
MARIANNE VARE, beloved wife and soulmate of Dale Vare, passed away at the Cardston Hospital on Monday, October 1, 2007 at the age of 45 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Amanda Slywka of Lethbridge and Amy Slywka of Coalhurst; two grandchildren Carter and Emily. She is also survived by her mother, Edeltraut Schwarz of Coalhurst, two sisters, Margaret (Norman) Bota of Red Deer and Marilyn Blaine of Las Vegas, one brother David (Theresa) Schwarz of Lethbridge, as well as her numerous nieces and nephews. Marianne was predeceased by her father, Leonhard Schwarz.
Marianne was known for her terrific sense of humor and her creativity in making things beautiful. She was a perfectionist and for her it was all about the extra’s. Marianne loved to celebrate special occasions and her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She had a magnetic personality that drew people to her. She was enthusiastic and generous to others. Marianne always had time to talk to others and will be sadly missed by the family and many many friends.

JACK VERWOERD, beloved husband of Karin Verwoerd and father to Jackie (Myles) and their son Logan, Tracy and Robbie, passed away peacefully at the Milk River Hospital on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at the age of 56 years.
Jack is also survived by his mother Della, his sisters Karen (Ralph), Carol as well as his brothers Tom (Joanne), Jim (Judy) and Dan.

JEAN BORDEN WILLOUGHBY

Jean Borden Willoughby passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 07, 2009 at Edith Cavell Care Centre, where she had been a resident for the past seven years. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her sister Amy Abell of Ottawa, her daughters, Catherine (Kit) McRae (Howard), and Barbara Cavers (Lloyd), her grandchildren, Steve (Julia) McRae, Mike (Kim) McRae, Chandra (Shawn) Foisie, David (Kerri-Lynn) Jensen and Christie Jensen, and great-grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan McRae, Aiden and Brodie McRae, Matthew McRae and Breanna and Brooklynn Jensen. Jean was predeceased by her husband, George, in 2005, and her sisters, Margaret Cogswell, Libby Frost, and Mary Smith.
Jean was born in Edmonton on April 30, 1916, the youngest of five daughters of Jennie and Edward Cogswell. She attended Garneau School in Edmonton and then enrolled in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta. While at the U of A, she participated in numerous varsity athletics, excelling in both tennis and basketball. She was elected to Student Council, serving as President of Women’s Athletics. 1937-38. She graduated with her BSc in Pharmacy in 1939 and spent the next year working as Assistant Pharmacist at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.
Upon her return to Alberta, Jean and her pharmacy classmate George were married in Edmonton on September 1, 1941. They lived in Calgary and Ponoka before moving to Lethbridge in 1948 with their young family. Jean and George owned Willoughby Drugs, later known as the Marquis Pharmacy, which was located in the old Marquis Hotel in downtown Lethbridge. Jean assisted in the drugstore from time to time until 1961 when she renewed her pharmacy license in order to assume a greater role in their business. She and George then worked together until they retired in 1980.
Jean was involved in executive positions in Home and School Associations and United Way. She served as president of the YWCA of Lethbridge District for two terms and often travelled to regional and national YWCA meetings. She was a member of the board of Southminster Church and also served on the Finance Committee. Jean was honored as a Life Member of the Southminster UCW. Jean lived with severe arthritis for almost forty years, but her tremendous strength of spirit enabled her to carry on an active and involved life in the community.
She enjoyed being physically active as long as she was able, playing tennis and golf as well as swimming and skating. She loved opportunities to go to the park or tobogganing with her young grandchildren, and had a wonderful rose garden. In her later years Jean took up Aqua-Sizes, Tai Chi and hand bells.
Constant throughout her adult life were her two passions, bridge and sewing. She played bridge twice a week for years and her bridge club friends were like her extended family. She was an accomplished seamstress and tailor and sewed wonderful clothes for everyone in the family, including her grandchildren and their dolls. Jean was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain; she always had at least three kinds of cookies on hand. She had a strong sense of family values, was a loving mother and grandmother, a loyal wife and a steadfast friend. We will all miss her.

CARL WINKLER
1933 - 2009
HENRY “CARL” WINKLER, beloved husband of Mary Winkler, of Stirling, AB, passed away at home, on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the age of 76 years.
He is the loving father of Charles Winkler of Fort Nelson, BC, Gary (Christine) Winkler of Lousana, AB, Cindy (Randy) Oler of Lethbridge, AB, and a caring Grandfather to Dustin, Daniel, Lacy, Cody, Dylan and Jessica. He is also survived by his sister Mary Wood, Sister in law Elsie Kenney and Brother in law, David Halvorsen. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Ellen, and nephew Wyatt Werner. Carl was born in Taber, AB January 8, 1933. His parents were Albert and Ellen Winkler. Carl was raised on a farm west of Raymond, AB. After his schooling in Raymond he joined the army as a Signalman with the UN Forces in Cyprus as a peacekeeper. After being discharged he met Mary. They were married July 29, 1959 in Shelby, Montana. Carl was a member of the Highway King’s Motorcycle Club in Calgary, AB. He worked seismograph in Northern AB and worldwide he worked in Algeria, Venezuela, Napal, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Cuba and traveled in many other countries. Carl’s main interest was radios. He was HAM Operator VE6 HCW. After retiring from seismic he operated a Radio Shack in Raymond for five years. He returned to Calgary, where he had a CB Radio repair shop at the Road King Truck Stop. Carl retired to Stirling, AB where he continued to repair radios. Among his many activities, he was involved with the bowling club and the ham radio club.

BERNARD WEHLAGE

BERNARD G. WEHLAGE of Milk River, AB, passed away at the Milk River Hospital on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the age of 91 years.
Ben is survived by two brothers Edwin (Yvonne) Wehlage and Elmer (Marjorie) Wehlage, both of Milk River, AB. and his sister – in – law Marie Wehlage of Lethbridge, AB. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Ben was predeceased by his parents Anton and Anna Wehlage, two brothers Arthur and Albert (Olive) Wehlage, and his sister Hilda (Frances) Belisle.
Ben was born in Ogema, Minnesota on October 7, 1917, going to school at White Earth until the age of 13. With his family, Ben then immigrated to Allerston, AB. on October 30, 1930, going to school for one year at the Allerston School. From that point he continued to farm with his father until 1948, when he decided to farm on his own. Ben was a dedicated farmer, farming right up until 2006. Following that he then moved into the Prairie Rose Lodge. Ben was a very quiet, talented and meticulous man. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Apooyakii ( Light Haired Woman) SHAYLA MARIE WINGS (BULL SHIELDS), of The Blood Reserve, AB, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the age of 21 years.
Shayla was born on September 11, 1987 at the Cardston Hospital. She passed away on May 31, 2009. Shayla will be sadly missed by her beloved angels Rougan and Isaiah.
She also leaves to mourn her mother Lana (Bruce), her sisters Keisha (R.J), and Ainsley, and her brother Blade. She is also survived by her Grandma Glenda (Rusty), her Great Grandparents; Gilbert & Barbara Bull Shields-Crow Chief, and Grandma Edna Devine, great Grandma Pauline Eagle Speaker. Her Aunts Billie Jo Pepion from Browning Montana, Arlene (Mike), Verda (Marcel), Debbie (Albert), Noreen, Jackie (Mike), Patsy (Roy), Judy (Bill), Belva (Bill), Carol and Cammie (Joe), Melody (Pat ), Maxine (Floyd) Big Head, Carrie and Patty (Tony) Devine. Her Uncles; Patrick, Derrick (Faith). Ace (Crystal), Cade (Marisha) and Basil (Heather). Great Aunts; Rose Marie Tail Feathers, Rosie Red Crow Sr., Louise Oka and Flora Creighton. Great Uncle; Charlie (Betty) Crow Chief. God Son; Treysen. Numerous Aunts and Uncles of the Eagle Speaker family.
Shayla was predeceased by her father Aloysuis Wings, her grandparents; David Eagle Speaker, Pat Crop Eared Wolf, Ruth Wings, her Great Grandpa Orton Eagle Speaker, uncles Mark and Irvine Yellow Feet, cousin Leeboy, Derrick Lee Four Horns (Wings) whom she was raised with and called him brother and her little sister Shayann, Great Uncle Emil Wings, Joe Crop Eared Wolf, Reggie Crop Eared Wolf, Great Aunties Agnes Shade, Ada Weasel Mocassin . And numerous relatives to many to mention.
Shayla also leaves to mourn her relatives; Bull Shields, Wings, Crop Eared Wolfs, Crow Chiefs, Eagle Speakers, Vielle's, Wolf Plumes, ,Black's, Wells, King's, Good Rider's, Mill's, Heavy Head, Blood's, Good Daggers, Crow's, Chief Body's, First Rider's, Mountain Horse, Weasel Mocassin's, Tail Feathers, Black Water's, Shade's, Oka's, and Red Crow's, Creighton's.
Shayla lost her father at a very young age, Aloysius Wings. Shortly after, Shayla went to stay with her Grandmother Ruth who raised her, Shayla loved and adored her so much. After the passing of her grandmother, Shayla went to stay with her Aunt Patsy. From then on her aunty Jackie helped raise Shayla and was close to her God sisters; Tisha, Channie, Muffin and Buffy.
Shayla was a very outgoing girl who lived her life for her boys. She showed so much support and love for them, they were her world, she had the biggest dreams for them.
Shayla received her Education in Fort Macleod, Cardston and L.C.I, Red Crow off campus, and most recent L.A. School of Hair Design, because she wanted to be a hair designer and Beautician. She was our "Model".
Shayla was known to be a very classy girl that showed in what she wore and how she dressed her boys, in brand name clothing. She made her house a very comfortable home for her boys. Shayla also showed a lot of love for her siblings. She always had positive complements to share with others, she can be heard in a crowd laughing and joking with everyone. Her many friends were all very special to her. Shayla had many friends of all ages.
Shayla was very excited because she was going to be an aunti, and was already preparing for the arrival by buying clothes and other fun stuff.
Shayla had a very strong bond with her step father Bruce, she was able to open up and share her thoughts and feelings with him, she loved him so much, like a real father. When Shayla wanted to go out it wasn’t her mom she would ask to babysit, it was Bruce, he is PAPA to Rougan and Isaiah. Her boys also have such a strong bond with him, they love him lots. Lana was very proud of how responsible Shayla was and that she didn’t have to worry about her. When Shayla was expecting her first child, Lana proudly accepted being a Grandma and shared her good news with everyone. Bruce and Lana are going to miss her at all their family functions, because she was the life of the party.
Shayla's last visit with her grandparents Gilbert and Barbara is going to be always remembered by them, they had supper with her the evening before she died and she told them that she loved them very much, they will never forget that.
