REBNE, Jessie
January 12, 1927 - February 4, 2015
Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Jessie enjoyed a "small town" childhood and youth, walking to school, volleyball, baseball, and friendship with five girls known as the JENIDS - an acronym of their first names - who would remain life-long friends. Jessie Rebne peacefully passed away at the Lacombe Lodge. She trained as a registered nurse at the Calgary General Hospital, class of 1949. She worked at Brooks Hospital where she thrived on the small town nurse experience. She met Eilert Rebne through friends and they married in 1951 and moved to his farm. At that time, nurses were required to live in town, so she gave up nursing after two years, but forever identified as a nurse. This city girl adapted to farm life and country dances with her musician husband, Eilert. Two children, Douglas and Donna, were born in Brooks. When Jessie developed allergies, the family moved, settling in Lacombe in 1959, where she and Eilert operated Tall Pine TV Sales and Service for 29 years. With no background in bookkeeping, Jessie took on that role at Tall Pine and enjoyed the customers and employees. Jessie enjoyed life in Lacombe. The family attended St. Andrew's United Church where Jessie volunteered with the United Church Women's group. She volunteered with the Lacombe Hospital Auxiliary, the Nursing Home Auxiliary, and at the Lacombe Lodge for bingo and card games. She and Eilert enjoyed an active social life with friends through the Lacombe Flying Club, the Kozy Korner Seniors Centre, and a multitude of musical jams. As a first-generation Canadian, she held pride in her Scottish roots and shared this with her family. Good with her hands, she was a knitter, gardener and canner, and baked for fundraising events. Jessie was an avid card player and she thrived on these social occasions both at their home and at the Lacombe Lodge. Social and caring, Jessie loved her husband, children and grandchildren, was a great friend and neighbor, and stayed in touch with friends and family near and far. Jessie was predeceased by her husband Eilert, in December 2014, and sister Alison Moore. She is survived by her sister Nancy Vivian of Langley, B.C., son Douglas (Nguyet) of Brussels, Belgium, granddaughter Chandra of Dublin, Ireland, grandson Sydney of Indiana, and her daughter Donna Polutnik (Rick) and grandsons Ross of Vancouver and David of Red Deer. A service of remembrance will be held at St. Andrew's United Church in Lacombe, AB on Tuesday, February 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Wilson's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium in charge of arrangements. If desired, donations in Jessie's memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, #202, 5913 - 50 Ave, Red Deer AB T4N 4C4. Condolences can be sent to the family at JessieRebne1927@gmail.com.
