Silvester, Charlie passed away suddenly at his home of heart failure on December 21, 2003 at the age of 76 years. Charlie was born the tenth of thirteen children to Ernest and Alice Silvester at Kew, Alberta on August 13, 1927. He is survived by his sisters May Silvester of Calgary and Alice Hampton of Turner Valley and his brother Jim Silvester (Kathy) of Square Butte. Charlie attended Square Butte School riding or walking the two and a half miles each way everyday. After-school hours and weekends were spent helping with the many chores on his mum and dad’s homestead. At the age of sixteen Charlie went to work for Tom Merriam feeding cattle in the winter and operating cat for Howard Hampton during the spring, summer and fall. In 1950 he worked for Alex Shaw of Carstairs and in 1951 for J. Schrader of Olds. In 1952 Charlie purchased the NW1/4 of Sec. 8, Twp. 20, R3, W5 from his brother Arthur where he managed his own ranching operation right up until the time of his death. In 1954 Charlie obtained a forest reserve grazing permit in the Muskeg which was originally for 25 head of cattle but was later increased to 50 head. Over the years Charlie worked closely with Howard and Alice Hampton on their ranch; feeding cattle during the winter months for Russ and Jack Broomfield and helping Herb McEathron with the fall threshing until Herb decided combining was easier. In his younger years Charlie enjoyed the great outdoors, particularly, hunting and fishing. He was a highly skilled cattleman and enjoyed spending time riding the range and checking his herd. As the threat of bears to his cattle in the Muskeg was constant, he could relate many good bear hunting stories. Charlie remained a bachelor his entire life. Cremation took place at Parklawn Crematorium. A memorial tea was held for Charlie on December 28, 2003 at Sunset Lanes in Turner Valley, Alberta. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1825 Park Road S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 3Y6.
