CLIFT, David F. ("Dave") Born North Van. 1943. On April 24, 2008 he "took off fishing" with his buddies and his Dad, Fred. We know he will stop by to see his Mom, Marjorie, and Auntie Jean Tucker. He will be greatly missed by his "sidekick"/ wife of 44 yrs, Myrtle, son, Robert, fav. daughter-in-law, Helena, & son, Ronald, by his brothers, Doug (Mary Ann), Ken (Cassie), his sister, Lorraine Cristofanetti (Chuck), and his niece and nephews, Colby, Cory, Mike, Brady, Jason, Lane, & Mickey. He will also be much missed by his in-laws, the Helps clan, his many, many good friends and colleagues, and by LARA, PERCS, & ESS, which were close to his heart near the end. Many thanks to Dr. Rita Wittman, Dr. J. Surkes, & the staff at Langley Memorial Hospital, with special heartfelt thanks to the CCU staff. No service by request. Dave's ashes will be spread privately at a later date at 100 Mile House. To honour Dave's love of children and the Great Outdoors, in lieu of flowers, donations to send children to camp may be made in his memory to CKNW Orphans' Fund (www.cknw.com/ orphans).

Louisianna (Lou) McClure passed away in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on Friday, December 7th, 2007 at the age of 85 years, after a brief illness. Lou was born on November 9th, 1922 in Winterburn, Alberta to Elizabeth & Ben Vandell, the middle child of ten children.
Lou will be sadly missed by her daughter, Phyllis (Perry) Linton; her grandchildren, Shane Linton, Curtis (Tammy) Linton and Lorrain (Dean) Bablitz; six great-grandchildren; her brother; sisters; extended family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew McClure; her son, Harvey; her parents; three brothers and two sisters.
Lou loved to cook and bake and spent many years cooking in road construction camps in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. She also had a restaurant and Bake Shop. Lou and Andrew moved to Vernon in 1980 from the Northwest Territories, after retiring. Lou was a most caring and loving woman, always giving of herself to the well being of others and was always happy. She enjoyed being with her many friends and her large circle of friends included people of all ages. She will never be forgotten.
Cremation preceded the Funeral Service which will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Thursday, December 13th, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Martin Peyton officiating. A Celebration Of Lou’s Life will follow at the Army, Navy & Airforce Veteran’s Hall, 2500-46th Avenue, beginning at 12:00 Noon.

Fred Mann was born on September 1st, 1928 in Strembeni, Bessarabia, Russia (now Romania), son of Phillip & Maria (Schramm) Mann. After WW11, he was reunited with his family in Scheessel, Germany. While living in Germany he became a musician (his first love), playing the trumpet and the drums and this is also where he became a bricklayer by trade. In 1951 he had the opportunity to come to Canada and in January, 1952 he came to Oliver, B.C., under the Sponsorship of his uncle and aunt, George & Ablona Kilbach. In 1954 he arrived in Vernon where he started working for David Howrie Ltd. In 1955 he met Lucy Friedrichs and they were married on September 29th, 1956. In 1960 Fred started his own masonry contracting business which he operated until the mid 1980’s. Fred G. Mann Masonry Ltd. built many well known buildings in the Vernon area including the Vernon Recreation Centre, Curling Rink, RCMP Station, City Hall, Library-Museum Complex and the Vernon Secondary School as well as many other projects outside of the Vernon area. After a fire destroyed the original Coldstream Hotel in the early 1960’s, he rebuilt it and in 1964 became a partner in the Hotel. Fred could be seen there most evenings. He also supported many sports teams which were sponsored by the Hotel and enjoyed watching many, many games over the years. Even when Fred was semi-retired he was always “down at the shop” working on a project.
Organizations which Fred belonged to over the years are: Miriam Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Vernon Shrine Club, Army, Navy & Airforce Veterans In Canada #5, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25 and the Southern Interior Construction Association. He was instrumental in starting Vernon Minor Soccer with George Stein in the 1950’s, taught and chaperoned the Vernon Girl’s Trumpet Band in the early 1960’s and was always seen in all the local parades driving a Shriner mini car and giving kids rides in it. Fred was one of the founding owners of Spallumcheen Golf Course.
Fred was always there to lend a helping hand for family and friends. He loved to play his music, fish with his grandson, Cody and anyone else who wanted to go. He loved to be out boating on Okanagan Lake, spending time at the family cabin, traveling around the world with Lucy and friends and watching soccer games.
Fred completed life’s work and was called Home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 having reached the age of 79 years, 3 months and 4 days. He is survived by his loving wife, Lucy, to whom he was married for 51 years; his son, Bob and his children, Lindsay and Amber; his daughter, Anna-Marie (Daryl) Carlyle and their children, Cody and Cierra; his family in Germany, Christa, Andrea and Henning; his brother, Christian (Anneliese); his sister, Ida (Willi) Duden; two sisters-in-law, Elli Mann and Mary Friedrichs, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip & Maria Mann; one brother, Jacob Mann; his father and mother-in-law, Gustav & Ottilie Friedrichs and one brother-in-law, Richard Friedrichs.
The Funeral Service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Monday, December 10th, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Roy White officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Ruby Mills passed away at Vernon on Monday, December 3, 2007. Aged 78 years. Ruby will be lovingly remembered by children Jan (Dave) Andrew of Maple Ridge, John (Karen) McAlpine of Terrace and Jill (Harvey) Prato of Armstrong; grandchildren Kyle, Megan, Dylan and Taylor; great-grandchild Makenna and husband Parker Mills. Ruby was a long time resident of Burnaby, then Langley until moving to Vernon in August 2000. She enjoyed traveling, made several trips to Hawaii, and loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 7, 2007, at Mountain View Chapel, Armstrong.

Suddenly, but peacefully 3 December 2007 at the age of 71. Ed was pre-deceased by his wife Norina in June of this year. He is survived by his son Bradley, daughter in law Ruby, and his much loved granddaughters, Alyssa and Rachel.
Ed is also survived by his mother, Mary Kramer of Vernon, brothers, Mike (Joan), John (Suzie) and Peter (Donna), and his sisters, Anne and Margaret (Gary); many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Ed was born in Vernon, B.C. and lived for many years in Burnaby, B.C.
There will be no formal service at his request. A Memorial gathering will take place at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

Vincent Sylvester “Syl” McGuinness passed away in the Alexander Wing of the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 at the age of 90 years, just nine days after the death of his son, Roy.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Ann (Alan) Wilson of Vernon, B.C., Sylvia McGuinness of Langley, B.C. and Pamela (Bill) Ruhland of Calgary, Alberta; his son, Don (Chris) McGuinness of Dubai, United Arab Emirates; his daughter-in-law, Denise McGuinness of Atlanta, Georgia; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Audrey Robinson of Belfast, Northern Ireland and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Besides his son Roy, Syl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Bain “Granny” McGuinness on July 19th, 2004; one brother and four sisters. Syl was a Charter Member of the Oliver Lions Club. His greatest passions in life were his love of music and his family. He leaves a wonderful legacy of love in the many special poems which he wrote over the years.
The Funeral Service will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Friday, December 7th, 2007 at 1:30 P.M. with The Reverend Rita Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family invites friends to join them at a Reception which will take place in the Tea Room at Bethel Funeral Chapel at the conclusion of the Graveside Service.

Edward Anthony Schmidt passed away peacefully in his home in Vernon on December 1, 2007, at the age of 81 years. Ed retired from farming in Alberta, and moved to Vernon some 20 years ago. Ed is pre-deceased by his parents, Anton and Maria; sister Anna; and brothers Tony, John, and Joe. He is survived by sisters: Marie, Lydia, and Elsie as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins in B.C., Alberta, and in Europe. He will be sadly missed also by good friends Bertha and Aurele Croteau of Vernon. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. James’ Roman Catholic Church on Friday, Dec. 7, at 11:00 A.M., with the Reverend Father Martin Peyton, celebrant. Long time Armstrong resident, Ethel “Effie” Latrace passed away peacefully at Pleasant Valley Manor on Saturday, December 1, 2007, in her centennial year.. Effie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her nephew Doug (Alison) Stewart of Armstrong and their children Lori Stewart of White Rock; Selina (Jeremy) Fleming and son Nathan of Grand Prairie; Blaine (Kristy) Stewart and sons Sawyer & Kooper of Silver Creek as well as nieces and nephews in Alberta & Saskatchewan. Predeceased by husband Ernest Latrace in 1996. Ethel was born and raised in South East Saskatchewan on what is now the third generation Moss Homestead (reference Golden West #95 Rural Municipality). She moved to Armstrong with her family in the mid 1940s. Effie and Ernest had a produce farm on Pleasant Valley Cross Road and in her younger years she was a Home Support Worker. Active in the community, Effie was a member of the United Church Ladies Group and a life member of the Historical Society. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Mountain View Chapel, Armstrong, Reverend Kelly Grittner officiating. Jean Ursulan passed away peacefully November 30, 2007, at Hospice House at the age of 80 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Bryan (Judy) and daughter Darlene (Irwin), 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, 1 sister and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband Nick, both parents and 4 brothers. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, where she raised her family and was manager of a Co-op grocery store, and later moved to Vernon to be closer to her family. She had many hobbies and was a great cook, and known to her family and friends for her fresh baked bread and homemade apple strudel. Cremation will be followed by a Memorial Mass to be held on Thursday, December 6, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church with Father Martin Peyton officiating. Interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery with tea to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice House, 3506 – 27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S4.
