Clark, William (Bill) Sunday, 28 Jan 2007
Williams Lake, BC
William (Bill) Clark was born in Truro, Nova Scotia on Dec. 7, 1934.
He was an only child. His dad was back and forth to war and Bill was raised by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
He left Nova Scotia at the tender age of 14 and traveled by boxcar, finally arriving in the Fraser Valley.
He returned to Nova Scotia when his grandmother was sick. When Bill was about 16, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and six months before being scheduled to go overseas, his mother reported that he was too young and he never did go.
Bill rode back out to BC after his grandmother passed away. He married Ajmare in Aug. 1958 in Abbotsford, BC.
As Bill had been an only child, he knew he wanted a large family. They had seven girls and one boy. Together, Bill and Ajmare worked on the berry farm in Mt. Lehman. Over time, they raised chickens, horses and he was also into mixed farming. Many years later, in 1995, Bill moved to McLeese Lake as he decided that he had enough of the rain at the coast. It was here that he had a sense of community and liked small town living.
He made numerous friends in the Cariboo. Their friendship meant so much to him. He was a terrific neighbor, friend, and mentor. He was a man to give great advice and often quoted his grandfather.
He loved to watch the History Channel and would often quote something he had seen on that station, as well. He loved his garden. He would always have a huge garden and feed the whole neighborhood.
He gave many of us our first taste of kohlrabi. He grew the best cabbage and cauliflower around. Bill loved nature. He spent many an hour at his kitchen table looking out the big picture window at the various animals that were in the field. Bill liked living in the country. For him, things didn’t have to be fancy. He built what he needed, he hunted and fished and enjoyed the rural setting. He loved his two dogs Missy and more recently, Foxy.
Bill did not escape sorrow, as a daughter and daughter-in-law pre-deceased him. Bill was a morning person. It was his opinion that everyone should get up early and so it was on Sunday, Jan. 28, that he passed away at 5:10 a.m., again, getting everyone up early one last time. Bill lost his battle to cancer and is now at peace and no longer suffering. His children, his family and his friends will always remember and love him. A quite service was held in Yarrow, BC on Feb. 1 where personal good-byes were said to a great man.
Buchanan, Ken Tuesday, 23 Jan 2007
Williams Lake, BC
It is with great sadness that our family shares the news that our beloved husband, dad and grandpa Ken Buchanan passed away on Jan. 23, 2007 at Ladner Hospital.
His wife Helen, daughter Cathie, and his twin granddaughters Emily and Elizabeth, the apples of his eye, were at his side when he left our world, and they will miss him greatly.
Close family friend Remi Scott was also by his side. He will also be sadly missed by his son, Scott. Ken courageously endured many years of poor health as he battled congestive heart failure, but he still managed to live his life to the fullest and enjoyed every adventure that came his way.
Ken loved to travel and especially enjoyed the many cruises and bus tours that he and Helen were able to take. He also was thrilled to be able to travel with his son-in-law Wes, to Churchill, Manitoba to see the polar bears.
They made a second trip together to see the sights in France. Ken and Helen also enjoyed many trips and adventures together as they traveled around North America.
Ken loved to grow things and every year he would put in a great big garden, and spend the spring and summer caring for it. When it was time to harvest it, he would go visiting and take along big baskets of produce to give to his friends.
Ken was born in Hensal, Ontario on September 11, 1929. He was the fourth of six children born to Alfred and Dora Buchanan. He grew up on the family farm and had many happy memories of his life there.
Ken came to British Columbia as a young man and after a stop in the Lower Mainland where he met and married his wife Helen, he eventually settled in Williams Lake in 1956.
There they raised two children – their daughter Cathie and son Scott. Ken worked at various jobs in the bush and in a saw repair shop before he decided to make his love of photography and sales into a career. He began with a photo studio and took many baby, family, school, graduation and wedding photographs throughout the years before branching out into the postcard business. He took the photographs for and created post cards of just about all of British Columbia. He also wrote and produced two souvenir books of B.C. scenery and traveled all throughout the province distributing them.
Ken loved the Cariboo and was proud of his Williams Lake roots. Although he and Helen spent their winter months in Ladner, B.C., they always looked forward to returning to Williams Lake each spring.
Ken was a member of the Lions Club and spent a great deal of time raising money for local and provincial charities. He also enjoyed the many foster children he supported through World Vision.
Ken loved life and his family and friends were a constant source of enjoyment for him. He loved to meet new friends and visit with old friends and he will be dearly missed by all.
Ken is preceded in death by his brother Wilfred and leaves to mourn him his wife of 49 years, Helen, his daughter Cathie (Wes), his son Scott (Elayna), his granddaughters Elizabeth and Emily, his brothers Don, Gord and Fred and his sister Joyce and their families.
We loved Ken and he will be missed more than words can possibly say. A life celebration was held in Ladner at Delta Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 28, and a service will be announced in Williams Lake at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the echocardiogram ultrasound fund at Cariboo Memorial Hospital.
