Jacobsen, John Sunday, 05 Mar 2006
Williams Lake, BC
John E. Jacobsen passed away at his home, March 5, 2006 at the age of 61.
He was born on March 12, 1944 in Williams Lake, B.C.
John was the son of Einar M. and Edna L. Jacobsen of Big Lake. He lived his life in the Big Lake and Tyee Lake area.
John’s father and mother preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy, daughter Tena (Calvin) MacLeod, son Jace (Shauna), daughter Reta: six grandchildren, Tara-Lynn, Tianna MacLeod; Jack, Shane, Leah, Holly Jacobsen; sisters Carole (Kenny) and Marie McKinnon.
John also leaves behind many other family and friends who will always miss and remember his unselfish, generous heart.
John attended school at Big Lake and in Williams Lake. John travelled with Jessie Frink to stay in the dorm during the week. He also attended Sunday school at Jessie’s house as it was a social time as well.
John met his wife in January 1966 in Big Lake.
Together they had three children.
But the big heart that he had brought other children into his life: nephew Noel (Mario) McKinnon, niece Juanita (nee McKinnon) and David Gray. All were members of his family.
John’s love of ranching kept him at the family farm for years and a few years after his marriage he started building the Tyee Lake part of the Ranch. His house was always open to all who wanted to visit; with coffee or a meal and lots of conversation.
John enjoyed ranching and he always made room for wildlife around the family farm.
But the baby grouse just hatching was at the top of his list. He saw it only once but that was all he needed. “Aren’t those babies so cute.”
Flying, fishing, trapping, horses, and hunting were his hobbies during his life.
He enjoyed working with machinery in the field and plowing snow for the neighbours.
He also liked to build things in his shop, from wooden spinning wheels to steel farm implements.
He always looked ahead with happy expectations for new heifers and new hayfields.
Unfortunately John’s health held him back from the things he enjoyed for some time.
He was always full of knowledge and we learned a lot from him.
John will be missed by all his family and friends.

Prestwich, Thomas Alexander (Alex) Friday, 16 Nov 2007
Port Hardy, BC
June 28, 1924 - Nov. 16, 2007
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Alex Prestwich; loving husband of wife Patti, father of Sandra Gunson & Mark Prestwich and grandfather of Alexander Gunson, Kiersten, Shelby and Brody Prestwich. He succumbed to complications from cancer and stroke on Nov. 16th, 2007 at 7:30 a.m. in the Port Hardy hospital. His brilliant sense of humour, love of nature, generosity, guidance and many talents will be sorely missed.
The following is but a brief summary of his life and only a sample of his many accomplishments:
Alex was born at Leichhardt (Sydney), Australia on June 28, 1924 - the youngest of 4 siblings. After skipping 2 grades in school he was offered a medical scholarship but instead, at age 14, chose to become the youngest apprentice ever accepted at John Hines Company in Sydney, Australia where he obtained his Journeyman Machinist’s qualification.
He also studied and trained in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in England, Scotland, Australia and Canada and was recorded by the British Professional Registry as a Professional Engineer (C. Eng.) qualified for full operating responsibility of any type of vessel, any size, anywhere in the world. He then worked on merchant ships throughout the globe from Singapore to South Africa. While on one trip he met his future bride of 49 years, Patti, in Strahan, Tasmania.
Alex was one of a team of four Engineers selected by the Canadian Government as the representatives in the historic takeover of Tuktoyuktak’s supply fleet for the Distant Early Warning (D.E.W) Line from the United States Government.
He provided the required on board certification for the construction of the destroyer-escort “HMCS Kootenay” and was portion of the specialized team for running and acceptance trials with the Canadian navy personnel as they approved and assumed command.
His travels took him to Vancouver where he was so taken by the city, he decided to stay. Patti and Alex were re-united a few years later and then married in 1958. Daughter Sandra was born in 1959 and son Mark followed in 1961.
Alex became an experienced Canadian Pacific Railway Engineer and B.C. Sugar employee until 1965 when the family moved to Port Alice. He was employed as an Assistant Chief Engineer at the Port Alice pulp mill. In 1968 the family moved to Port Hardy where he took on the role as the supervisor in charge of the B.C. Hydro diesel electric generators supplying the town’s power. In 1969 Alex returned to his first love of machining and started his own company, Port Hardy Engineering, which exists across the highway from another of his passions and businesses--Sunny Sanctuary Campground.
When we are sad and lonely
And everything goes wrong
We seem to hear you whisper
“Cheer up and carry on”
Each time we see your photo
You seem to smile and say
“Don’t cry I’m only sleeping
We’ll meet again someday.” The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Andre deWitt and the nurses and staff at both Port Hardy Hospital and Eagle Ridge Manor for their understanding and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
A celebration of his life will be planned and announced in 2008.

Eddie was born in Vancouver but spent his whole life in Sointula. He became a trucking contractor and a commercial fisherman. He had his seiner “Jenolet” built in 1977 and skippered it until 1999.

Evans, Mavis Sunday, 07 Oct 2007
Port Hardy, BC
July 31, 1931 - October 7, 2007
Sadly, we announce the passing of Mavis Evans, on October 7, 2007, a long time resident of Port Hardy, after her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and strokes.
Mavis moved to Port Hardy in June 1971. She worked at Dong Chong Supermarket, Lucky Dollar Market, Port Hardy Rentals, and finally found her niche at the Doctor’s Office. She was the bookkeeper, supply clerk, babysitting Grandma on call, sympathetic shoulder, and probably best known as the nice Grandma lady with a drawer full of suckers.
Mavis was also involved with the Lioness club. She created wonderful cakes for their sales, and helped with their community projects. The Legion was very important to her, and she, a 30 year member, volunteered on their executive board as both Treasurer, and Membership Chairman, and also contributed through the Ladies Auxiliary with assistance in catering and planning Legion functions. Mavis became involved in the Senior Center and was the Treasurer until she was no longer able to perform her duties due to her progressive illness.
Mavis is survived by, her husband, Ken Roath; Daughter, Pat McCart (John) of Port Hardy, Daughter, Nancy Proctor (Randy) of Alberta; Son, Bob Scharff (Susan) of Vancouver; and Grandchildren; Bryan McCart (Tara) & Erin McCart (Justin), Danny Proctor (Laura) and David Proctor (Sharon), Great-granddaughter Julia Proctor; Grandsons Robert Scharff and David Scharff. Extended family includes Arlene & John Jossy, Lloyd and Olga Roath, Mitch & Crystal Roath, Fred & Debbie Roath; and their families.
Mavis was very loving; and in turn a much loved person. We will miss her forever. We would like to thank the Nurses, Doctors, Nurse’s Aides and support staff of the Port Hardy Hospital, and Eagle Ridge Manor for their compassionate, considerate and very dedicated care of our Wonderful Mom, Mavis. She was in the hands of Angels on earth.
