Winkler, Gary Gerhard
Sep 12, 1936 - Aug 31, 2012
Gary (Gerhard) Winkler passed away on August 31st, in Kelowna, in the comforting arms of his close family. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Patricia, brother Klaus (Marian), sister Gisela, nephew Frank (Catherine), son Jason (Allan) and Jason's mother Elsie. Born in Altlandsberg Germany, Gary went to Calgary in 1959 to seek adventure and new experiences which set the stage for the next 53 years. A proud builder of numerous landmark buildings and projects, Gary's attention to detail and quality contributed to his success at work and in life. He will best be remembered as a world traveller with an extraordinary sense of adventure and zest for life that was often shared with lifelong best friends Klaus Neumann (Gisela), Larry Schiebel (Helga) and Peter Pelz (Maureen). Perhaps most of all, Gary's youthful optimism in the face of daunting challenges was an inspiration. He was always ready to comment or provide comic relief and never failed to leave a lasting impression. He was a true original. Gary is also fondly remembered and ever missed by his sister-in-law, Stephanie (Pat), brother-in-law Steve (Roberta) and various nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Gary”. He will be missed and never forgotten. The family is so grateful to the friends and neighbors who have rallied around to offer such comfort and support. They would also like to thank the Interior Cancer Clinic, the palliative care nurses and the staff at Hospice House for their kindness and compassion. A private celebration of his life and adventures will be held in late September. Donations in Gary’s memory may be sent to the Central Okanagan Hospice House in Kelowna. http://www.hospicecoha.org
