DESIATNYK, Jeannette Esther (Martens)
October 22, 1944 – December 24, 2011

It is with great sadness we announce Jeannette’s passing after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. Jeannette passed away in Palliative Care, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on December 24, 2011. She will forever be remembered by her loving husband of 26 years, Paul, her surviving sisters; Esabell Neufeld (Abe – deceased), Caroline Doherty (Jim), Gladys Ralph (Bob), Verna Henry (Eugene – deceased) and brother Donald Martens (Connie). She was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm and Mary Martens, sisters; Doris Lupton (Tom –deceased), Edith Wall (Ernest) and brothers; Norman Martens (Elsie – deceased) and Edward Martens (Pat). Jeannette was a loving wife and cherished her family. She thoroughly enjoyed their many vacations in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, BC and Hawaii, surrounded by family and friends. She valued her friendships and had a wide circle of friends who hold her closely. “Jenny” had a wonderful sense of humour, a beautiful smile for all, and a passionate drive to help those in need of any assistance. Those who knew Jeannette will remember her quiet demeanor, her love for good music, her extraordinary courage in suffering through her cancer, and her faith in the Almighty. No flowers please. In memory of Jeannette, donations can be given to your choice of charity. Rest in Peace. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.

DIXON, Rachel
Jan 12, 1938 - Oct 23, 2011

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of Rachel Dixon. Rachel passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Hospital at the age of 73 from Cryptococcal Disease. Loved by all, she leaves behind her husband Jack, daughter's Corrine & Rhonda, son-in-laws Ernie & Todd, grandchildren Kyle, Chelsea, Eric & Julie, sister Diane, brothers Michael & David and numerous other relatives and a plethora of friends. A celebration of Rachel's life will be held at Yates Funeral Home, at 1000 Allsbrook Rd in Parksville (250-248-5859) on Sunday November 20th at 1:30 PM. Many thanks to Vivian, Dr. Maccari and all of Rachel's friends for your years of care and support and also sincere appreciation to the wonderful Palliative Care staff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nanaimo Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

DUCK, Cecil Henry John
5 June 1927 – 27 September 2011

John Duck, surrounded by family, died peacefully at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital Tuesday evening. He is survived by his wife Edith, daughter Tina (Peter), three granddaughters, Liza (Ryan), Kyla (Trevor) and Lindsay (Steve), five great-grandchildren, Kate, Max, Jordan, Luke, and Sophia, sister Audrey (Udo) and brother Bill (Wendy), as well as numerous other relatives spread throughout Canada and England. He was predeceased by his son Grant. After raising their family in Kitimat John and Edith retired to Qualicum Beach and as always their primary focus remained family. John’s granddaughters and great-grandchildren were the joy of his life. He explored Vancouver Island from tip to tip and was a wonderful tour guide for all their visitors from near and far. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Drs. Croome, Booth, Rasiah, Carson and the wonderful staff at the Renal Unit, also to the staff of Emergency, The First Floor, and Palliative Care Unit at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Your care and compassion were greatly appreciated during this difficult period. To Dr. Weir and the staff at the Home Dialysis Unit of the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, thank you also for your many years of care and support. A celebration of John’s life will take place at Yates Funeral Home, 1000 Allsbrook Rd in Parksville on Saturday, October 8th at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, 1200 Dufferin Cres Nanaimo, BC V9S 2B7.

FORRESTER, Muriel

With her family by her side, Muriel passed away on April 8, 2011 at the age of 89 in the Palliative Care ward at NRGH. She is survived by her daughter Wendy (Reg) LeBlanc of Toronto, granddaughter Elaine (Max) Legace of Toronto, cousins Sandy (Gladys) Slater, Ian Forrester, and Basil Fox. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 23, 2011, at 1:30 pm at St. Stephens United Church, 150 Village Way in Qualicum Beach. For those who wish, donations may be made to the SPCA Box 1407 Parksville, BC V9P 2H3 or Heart & Stroke Foundation 1212 West Broadway Vancouver, BC V6H 3V2.

FORSHNER, Lydia

Lydia was born March 4th, 1913 in Port Melon B.C. on the Sunshine Coast. She passed away peacefully July 7th, 2011 at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach. Lydia is survived by her son Ron Forshner (Yvette) daughter Barb Laplante (Marcel), Grand children Brad Forshner (Janet), Lynnae Redmann ( Jim) Rene Guerrier ( Darrel) and Chad Laplante. Great Grandchildren Kyle, Annette, Naomi, Jared, Tyrel, Derrick, Shelby, Kailey and Gabrielle. Brother Jim Capustinsky, ( Florence), Sisters Anna Hrychuk, and Eva Buck. One of 16 brothers and sisters, Lydia lived in Alberta and several cities in B.C. She lived in Errington on a small hobby farm for 28 years raising, showing and caring for horses, always with a couple of dogs by her side . She loved her garden, was a fabulous cook and loved to bake. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing. She spent the last 12 years living on her daughter and son in laws¡¦ farm in Coombs, in her own house with her lovely dog Maggie always close by. Mom moved to The Gardens in Qualicum Beach January 2011 . Her Funeral was at Yates Funeral Service in Parksville, B.C. July 12th 2011 . A special thanks to the caring nurses and care workers at The Gardens at Qualicum Beach . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA.

GLENCROSS, Patricia (nee Kadwell)

Born in Calgary March 14, 1937, passed away peacefully December 6th. She will be sadly missed by her devoted husband Al, her children, Lorna, Colin and Craig, and their spouses. Stepchildren Brian, Daryl, Susan, and their spouses. Also by her grandchildren, Oisin, Krystal, Colleen, Trudy and Ian. As well, by her sister Anne, brother Ed and by many wonderful friends. A private viewing was held December 8th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arthritis Society of Canada.

HAFER, Nancy D.
1936 - 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, Nancy Hafer, on July 21, 2011. She passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of NRGH. Nancy was predeceased by her loving husband Ding (Albert) in 2009. She leaves behind a blended family of six children, twelve grandchildren and one great-grandson. Nancy and Ding moved to Parksville in 1988 for the slower life in preparation for retirement. Together they loved to travel and enjoyed clubs such as the RV Camping Club and the Model Railroad Club. Nancy was an avid gardener, reader, painter and craftsperson. She will be greatly missed by friends and family. A celebration of Nancy¡¦s life will be held at St. Stephens United Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach on August 17, 2011 @ 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Donations Dept. 1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6H 3V2.

HANSEN, John Carl R. H.

John was born in Denmark March 22, 1934 and passed away November 8, 2011, in Parksville, B.C. He came to Winnipeg, Canada in 1957, living there for 23 years before moving to Qualicum Beach. He is survived by wife, Carol (nee Seavers), daughter Karyn (Patrick) McLane, son John (Annette), five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sister Ruth in Denmark and many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed his many years of serving the community in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlander reserves, coaching ringette, and was proud to have received his twenty year service award with Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department. He was always happy when chatting with friends he had met through the Chuckwagon and Country Rose Café at Coombs as well as down at the Beach Hut. A gathering for all friends and family will be held on Wednesday, November 16 at 2:00 at the Little Qualicum Hall, 1210 Centre Road.

HARRIS, Lily Louise

Born on 27th October 1912 in London, England, Lily passed away peacefully at Dufferin Place on 9th December 2011 at age 99. Pre-deceased by her loving husband Edward Harris in 1977, Lily leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters Mary (John) Bradbury, Nanaimo, Joan House, Nanoose Bay, and son Ken Bridges, Nanoose Bay, grandchildren Susan (Louis) Stone, John (Leanne) Bradbury, Tina House, Stephen (Deena) Bradbury, Bonnie (Dan) Hucul, Cindy (Michael) Lawrence, Alan (Cindy) House, Michael House, and fourteen great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers please donate to Dufferin Place Nanaimo in Lily’s name.

HAWKES, George William "Bob"
S/Sgt. Retired RCMP
Feb 26, 1937 - July 22, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Bob passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family. He will be forever missed by his loving wife, Judy, his children Carrie Hawkes (Brian) of Nanaimo, BC, Georgina Wheatcroft (Mark) of Cloverdale, BC, Greg Hawkes (Patti & Jake) of Victoria, BC. Three granddaughters, Alex, Amy, and Chloe. Three brothers, Jim Hawkes (Joanne), Reg Hawkes (Donna), Rod Hawkes (Lisa); nieces, nephews, cousins, two aunts, and many friends. Bob was predeceased by his father, Fred, mother, Amy, and first wife, Fernande. Bob was a fierce competitor in curling as well as a great coach. He mentored his daughter, Georgina, in curling and she became a world champion. He coached his son Greg in Baseball to many championships including the Dizzy Dean World Series. Greg was also a Jr. National curling champion. Daughter Carrie was supported in her love of figure skating and is the Head Pro at the Nanaimo Skating Club. Bob was a true gentleman, loved and respected. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. S. Noble for his outstanding care and support and also thank Homecare and Hospice for their compassion and assistance. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday August 5, 2011, 2:00pm, at the Church of Ascension, 887 Wembley Road, Parksville, BC. Reception following in the church hall. If friends desire, Memorial tributes may be made in Bobs¡¦ memory to: The Canadian Diabetes Association, 1400 ¡V 522 University Avenue, Toronto, ON M5G 2R5 or Oceanside Hospice Society, 210 Crescent Road West, Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1J9.
