William "Bill" Donald
April 21, 1914 - January 24, 2011
Bill passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on January 24, 2011 at the age of ninety-six. He is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Peggy, and his sons Alan (Maribeth) and Neil (Lee-Ann). He also leaves grandchildren Paul, Shelley, Cassandra, John and Christa as well as his second family Audrey and Harold Davis and their daughters Michelle, Heather, and Valerie.
Bill was predeceased by his father (William), mother (Emma), sisters Jenny and Mary, and brother, John.
Bill was born and grew up in Perth, Scotland, where he apprenticed as a joiner and carpenter. In 1936 he moved to Manchester, England, where he met and married Peggy in 1939. There he worked in the building trades until he served in the Royal Artillery during World War II, seeing action in North Africa and Italy. After leaving the army, he continued in the building industry until 1957, when he, Peggy and the boys moved to Vancouver. After some difficult years in the construction industry, he took a job on security and traffic at UBC until he retired in 1979. This was Bill’s dream job and he loved to regale people with his innumerable UBC tales, including the one about his impounding a Sherman tank – fantastic, but true.
In 1990, he and Peggy moved to Kamloops and quickly established a network of close friends, particularly among their church family at Southwest Community Baptist Church, as well as many others.
Over the last few years, Bill’s strength began to fail, but his sense of humour and his love of others endured. He loved to welcome visitors and, always an inveterate storyteller, would entertain them with accounts of his exploits and experiences.
As his strength faded, Dad just slipped quietly away.
The family would like to thank Dr. Chung for her oustanding care, compassion and dedication; the staff of High Country Health Care, who did an outstanding job of attending to his needs; and the staff and volunteers at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice for their angelic kindness, tenderness, and empathy.
A Memorial Service will be held for Bill at Southwest Community Church, 700 Hugh Allan Drive, Kamloops, at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 5, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice would be appreciated.
