Marie Brooks
February 26, 1920 - October 29, 2009
We regret to announce the passing of a beautiful lady, (Rose) Marie Brooks, on October 29, 2009.
Mom was born in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan (a town named after her mother) on February 26, 1920 to Francois and Rose Dubreuil, pioneer farmers from France who had settled in the area. Marie, as she preferred to be called, was the 6th of 9 children. She attended a one-room school house close by the Dubreuil homestead, then moved to Saskatoon where she completed a hairdressing and barbering course. Marie the joined her childhood sweetheart, Jack Brooks, in Winnipeg where he was working for the CNR. They were married on September 1, 1943.
The family had expanded to include four children by the time Dad accepted a transfer to Kamloops in June 1956. A fifth child came along two years later. Finances were a challenge with five growing children so Mom returned to her chosen profession, hairdressing, to help supplement the family income. Hairdressing was truly Mom’s gift and she gave it freely and generously to those she loved.
The highlight of Marie’s life was her family (children, grandchildren and great grandchildren) followed closely by her love for friends, neighbours, as well as animals, especially dogs and bunny rabbits.
Mom was a shy, unassuming person who loved unconditionally. She was proud of her French heritage.
Marie was predeceased by Jack, her husband of 53 years in January 1997. She is survived by her brother Paul (Germaine) and sister Bernadette. She will be dearly missed by her children Bryan (Sharon), Marilyn, Ron (Linda), Lyle (Merle) and Dolly (Barry). Cherishing their grandmother’s memory are Jennifer, Mike, Josh, Kelly, Matt, Neil, Nick, Trish, Sarah, Monica, and Dave, and great grandchildren Ashley and Caelan.
Family, friends, neighbours and anyone who came to know Marie are invited to a Celebration of her life that will be held on Saturday November 7, 2009 at 1:00 PM in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive. Please wear your most colourful clothes, bad hair and bring a story you can share about Mom. The family gratefully declines flowers and encourages donations to the BCSPCA in Marie’s name.
The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Royal Inland Hospital (5 North) and Ponderosa Lodge for the care they gave Mom during her stay. Our heartfelt thanks to the nurses and caregivers at Overlander Extended Care, especially Willow Wing, who gave gentle, loving care to Mom and her family. Thanks for the coffee, cookies and hugs.
Mom
Loving you now, always and forever
Au revoir, ma petite chou
