Myriam del Pilar Duncan
Myriam del Pilar Mulatero Alvarez
October 10, 1949 - August 27, 2010
Born in: Valparaiso, Chile
Passed away in: Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada
Myriam passed away peacefully on August 27, 2010 at Royal Inland Hospital with family at her side.
She leaves her much-loved daughter Jerusha, in-laws Susan and Ian Senkow, nieces Shalisha and Tifarah, nephew Manaen, ex-husband Stewart and many friends.
At home in Vina del Mar/Valparaiso, Chile, her father Francisco predeceased her, but her mother Norma, brothers Carlos and Francisco and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins also mourn her passing.
Myriam was born in Valparaiso and attended Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso where she earned the title Teacher of General Education in September, 1980. She was teaching when she met a Canadian backpacker, George Stewart Duncan, in 1973, with whom she corresponded for the next seven years. When he returned to Chile to see her in 1980, they married (1981) and returned to Vancouver, eventually moving to Kamloops in 1990.
Myriam became well known for preparing and serving fabulous, ambrosian meals served with fine china, crystal and silverware with lace tablecloths. Myriam's unforgettable meals usually ended with three desserts of her making, served one after the other, and no one could resist.
From about her mid-30s, Myriam's myotonic dystrophy very slowly worked its way through her body and mind, robbing her of her vitality, vivacity, agility and fun-loving spirit. Being a muscle-wasting disease, it eventually got to her heart muscle and she went into cardiac arrest August 17.
Myriam was greatly loved on two continents and will be deeply missed. The family thanks all those who gave Myriam and Jerusha so much assistance and support over the years, especially her church family at Southwest Community Church, others at Vineyard Fellowship, long-time friends in Vancouver and neighbours past and present. Thank you all.
A brief memorial service takes place at Southwest Community Church on the corner of Hugh Allan Drive and Highway 5A to Merritt on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. There will be opportunities for those who would like to share fun memories. Food and beverages to follow.
