PETERS, Mary (Maria Florence Brucks) - Friday, 04 May 2007
Mary Peters (Maria Florence Brucks) died peacefully at 12:40 on May 4, a week and a half before Mother’s Day. She was 90 years of age. Mary was born on October 25, 1916 in Stepanowka, USSR to Heinrich and Aganetha Brucks. Mary developed an early sense of community and a sense of herself, as she had 8 sisters and 1 brother. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Saviour in her early years. The family moved from the USSR to Canada in 1926. Life was difficult, and the entire family worked hard at simply surviving in southern Alberta during the years of the depression. She was baptized here in Coaldale, Alberta. Mary took adult night school to finish high school and then took teacher training. She met Jacob Peters while at normal school in Vancouver in 1951. They were married on August 8, 1954 in the Yarrow MB Church in Yarrow, BC. Mary taught school for three years. The family then moved from Abbotsford to Field to Prince Rupert, following Jacob’s teaching career. The family settled back in Clearbrook, BC in 1960. They joined the Clearbrook MB Church, where Jake and Mary have been members ever since. Mary did some substitute teaching, but taking care of the household was her main concern. Mary loved to sing with her family, she would play the piano and the children and Jake would sing. She was an active member of the church as well, singing in choirs and teaching Sunday School when she could. Jake and Mary sold their house after all the children had moved out and moved into a smaller home. Mary lived a healthy life, which probably came from the fact that she liked to go on daily walks. She did suffer a few injuries, and in the very recent past was hospitalized as a result of having gallstones. She never ceased praying and she loved Psalm 23. She did not recover her health, and took her last breath on May 4.
She is predeceased by her father, mother, four sisters and one brother; she will be missed by her husband, Jacob Peters, children Joyce (Gerald) Loeppky, Henry (Karen) Peters, Don (Madoka) Peters, Dave (Connie) Peters, Laurie Peters, Ken (Melinda) Peters, and 16 grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford. Graveside service will be Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 9:30 am from Maclure Road Cemetery with Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 a. m. at the Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford. KROEKER, Helen Janzen - Monday, 30 Jul 2007
Helen Janzen Kroeker passed away July 30, 2007 at the Tabor Home, Abbotsford, BC in her 100th year. She was born August 10, 1907 in Franztal, South Russia to Jacob K. and Katharina (Enns) Janzen. She enjoyed a carefree childhood and went to school in Russia. In 1925, the Janzen family left Russia for Canada and lived on a large farm at Rosser, Manitoba for five years before moving to Yarrow, BC in 1932. Helen and her sisters went to Vancouver to find jobs as domestics making the Vancouver Mennonite Girls Home their “home away from home”. She moved back to Chilliwack and worked for Dr. and Mrs. Mccaffray, an early Chilliwack medical doctor as housekeeper and assistant. In the early 1940s she moved back to Vancouver to work as a seamstress in a clothing factory. In 1960, the factory she worked in was closed and the business was moved to Los Angeles and Helen decided to move to Los Angeles so she could keep on sewing.
In 1968, she met and married Fred Kroeker of Merced, California. Fred passed away in 1986 and in 1990 Helen moved back to Canada and bought a condo in Evergreen Village where she lived until 1997 when she became a resident of the Tabor Home in Clearbrook.
Helen will be remembered for her generosity to family and friends, remembering all our birthdays with a card and note and especially for the valentines she sent to all of her extended family. Her delicious meals and the interesting things such as artichokes (from her garden) dipped in butter she taught us to eat when we visited her in California. We were making plans to celebrate her 100th birthday on August 10, but instead we are celebrating her life. She was everyone’s favourite aunt and now we are truly orphans as she was the last of her siblings: Jacob, Henry, Elizabeth, Katherine and Cornelia to be called home.
Helen is survived Fred’s children: Ruth Kroeker, Carl Kroeker and Gerald (Sara) Kroeker of Fresno, California; grandchildren David (Kristin) Kroeker, Timothy (Judith) Kroeker, Andrew (Christa) Kroeker, Mark (Kristin) Kroeker, Christine (JonPaul) Avent; great grandchildren Joanna, Aaron, Erika, Daniel and Jonathan Kroeker, and Luke Avent and a very large number of nieces and nephews and their families.
Celebration of Helen's life will be held Friday, August 3 at 11:00 am at the Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church with Rev. Walter Wiens officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MCC Canada.
