Oliver Funeral Chapel Saturday, August 20th, 2011 at 1:00 pm Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating Interment: To take place at a later date Friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Order of Eastern Star Creston Unit Erich Sommerfeld October 30, 1916 – October 6, 2011 Erich Sommerfeld was called to his eternal home on October 6, 2011 to be reunited with his loving wife Lucy. Erich was the eldest child born to Natalie and Johann Sommerfeld in Neitwalde, Germany on October 30, 1916. Erich immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 12 and settled in Leask, Saskatchewan where his family cleared land and farmed. In 1946 Erich visited his uncles’ farms in Lister and his Uncle Herman convinced him to buy an orchard farm. On February 1, 1947 Erich was married to Lucy Ber on Lucy’s parent’s farm in Percival, Saskatchewan. The newly married couple moved to the farm in Lister, BC in March. Erich farmed fruit, alfalfa and dairy/beef cattle until he suffered a stroke on October 15, 2007, after which he was forced to move in to town and resided at Hillcrest (Creston Valley Hospital) then Crestview Care Village. Erich was a hardworking man dedicated to his land and animals; farming until he was almost 90 years of age. He made annual trips to his son David’s farm in Saskatchewan to help with harvest until he was no longer able to make the long drive. Erich had a seasonal job working at Creston Packers retiring from the packing shed at the age of 71. He also was the maintenance man for Lister Water Works retiring at the age of 77 after 40 years of service. In 1949 Erich joined the Lutheran Church Volunteers to build Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lister where his family attended services until the Lutheran churches amalgamated in Creston. Quite often after Sunday services Erich and Lucy would visit family and friends in Swan Valley Lodge and Pioneer Villa. Erich was also involved in the Lister picnics and supported the building of the Lister swimming pool. Erich is predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Lucy (passed away October 2, 2010), his parents, Natalie and Johann Sommerfeld, his brother Otto Sommerfeld, sister Erna Ber, sister-in-law Irma Sommerfeld, brothers-in-law George Ber and Clarence Zorn. Erich will be lovingly remembered by his children Martha (Brian) Endicott, David Sommerfeld, Ruth (Ron) Behnke, and Ervin (Kathy) Sommerfeld; grandchildren Christy (Brett), Joanne, Mark (Bev), Steven, Jonathan, Christina and John, great-grandsons Jacob and Erich; brother-in-law David Ber and sisters-in-law Alma Zorn and Lydia Ber and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service was held Saturday October 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor Harry Haberstock and buried beside Lucy at the Lister Community Cemetery. Laura was predeceased by her husband Alex Liggat. She will forever be remembered by her son Robert Liggat of Canmore, AB; daughter Debra Gimby of Creston, BC; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
