Ross, Gen
Gen Ross ( nee Grizzelle ) passed away on June 5, 2012 in the Crest View Care Village at the age of 89 years. Gen was born to parents Bea & Cecil Grizzelle on September 14, 1922 in Nelson, B.C. She received her formal education in Nelson, B.C. and then continued her education in Victoria, B.C.
After her schooling, Gen taught for three years in Proctor B.C. in the early 40’s. Gen married Arthur James Ross on February 22, 1945 in Nelson, B.C. She then stayed at home and raised their family until the early 1970’s when she began working at the Truscott’s Honey farm.
She was a part of numerous clubs and committees including the following: Erickson Hospital Auxiliary, Pioneer Villa Auxiliary, T.A.P.S., Hospital Tuck Shop, a Bridge Club, Lady Kiwanis, Cresteramics, Creston Wildlife Center and the Creston Valley Library.
Gen was predeceased by her parents Bea & Cecil Grizzelle; husband Jim Ross; son Garry Ross and close friend and companion Dan Butler.
She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her children Doug (Denise) Ross, Val (Richard) Ahtila, Anita (Bob) Middleton, Dave Ross and Irene Robinson; grandchildren Terry (Kendel) Zeyha, Heather (Josh) Steffl, Collin (Madeline) Ross, James Middleton, Allan Middleton, and Amanda Middleton (Mike Morgan); great-grandchildren Colten and Tyler Zeyha.
The Memorial Funeral Service was held Monday June 11, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at the G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating. Interment of Ashes took place at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC

Knopfler, Alfred
Alfred Knopfler passed away on May 11, 2012 in the Creston valley hospital at the age of 83 years.
Alfred was born in Schlegel, Amtzell, Germany on November 2, 1928 to parents Anna and Franz Knopfler. He received his education in Amtzell, Germany and then moved to Canada in 1952. In Canada he lived in several places, including Lloydminster, Ontario and Uranium City, before settling in Canyon in 1980. Here he grew alfalfa and ranched cattle. Alfred married Marianne in Creston in 1995.
Alfred was a member of the German Canadian Club, Knights of Columbus (in Uranium City) and a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church.
He was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Franz Knopfler and two brothers in Germany.
Alfred will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marianne; stepchildren Waltraud (Paul) Greenough and Ralph (Roberta) Pelzmann; three step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren along with one sister and two brothers in Germany.
A funeral service was held Tuesday May 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Tom Kakkaniyil officiating.

Smith, Martha
Martha Smith (nee Roth ) passed away at the Creston Valley Hospital on May 16th, 2012 at the age of 84 years, after a lengthy illness with emphysema and then suddenly pneumonia. She was born March 6th, 1928 to Caroline and John Roth at Thelma, AB, where she received her primary education. Martha was employed at Potteries in Medicine Hat, AB for about 15 years, leaving Hycroft China in 1970. She married Reginald Smith and moved to Creston, where she worked for a short time at the old bus depot restaurant in the kitchen. Reg died in 1973, and Martha and Wally Thompson (whose wife passed away around the same time) turned to each other and were together until he passed away in December 1982.
Martha was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, loved children and volunteering at Kids Korner in the church and enjoyed belonging to T.A.P.S. At a younger age, Martha enjoyed gardening, especially growing dahlias and other flowers. After Wally died, Martha continued to raise chickens and cows. She also loved embroidering and was working on quilt blocks just two weeks before her passing.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Caroline Roth, ex-husband Jacob Lohrer, Reginald Smith and common law husband Wallace Thompson, eight brothers, four sisters and nephew Terry Roth.
Martha will be dearly missed by her son Gordon ( Betty ) Roth Lohrer of Creston, two grandsons Jason ( Susan ) Lohrer of Creston and Colin (Colleen ) Lohrer of Rossland, seven great-grandchildren, Betty ( Chris ) Catharell, Dawn ( Milton ), Matthew, Nicole of Creston, Harley, Nathan and Kayda of Rossland and two great, great-grandchildren Ashtyn and Karissa, numerous nieces and nephews including Brian Roth of Calgary and sister in law Madeline Roth of Calgary.
A private family memorial funeral service to be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. The family wishes friends to remember and celebrate Martha in their own way.

Anderson, Catherine Carswell
Catherine Carswell Anderson passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 24, 2012 in The Slocan Community Health Residential Care Center, New Denver, B.C. at the age of 96 years.
Catherine was born in Wiseton, Saskatchewan on April 26th, 1916 to David and Margaret Dickson.
She lived for many years in Creston, B.C. with her husband Johnie Arthur Anderson where they owned and operated Victory Dry Cleaners situated across from the post office where the health food store is presently.
She was very active with the Royal Purple and also the Legions Ladies Auxillary.
She moved to New Denver a few years ago to be closer to her sons.
She was predeceased by her husband, Johnie Arthur Anderson.
She is survived by her Daughter Elaine Brown of Bowden, Alberta, Sons Larry, of Silverton, B.C. Neil of Ottawa, Ontario, and Ron of New Denver, B.C.. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and by several adopted grandchildren.
The Funeral Service will be held from the Chapel of The G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel, Creston, B.C. on Friday, August 03. 2012 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Ron Benty officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, B.C.

Skerik, Wesley (Wes)
Wesley Robert (Wes) Skerik passed away in the early hours of July 5, 2012 with his family by his side at the age of 89 years.
Wes was born to parents Edith and William Skerik in Stettler, AB on April 5, 1923. He moved to Lister, B.C. with his family in 1935.
Wes joined the RCAF in 1942 and went to Britain during WWII. He was a prisoner of war in Germany until the end of the war. He then met his wife to be, Mae Connell, in Scotland. In 1960, Wes took over the family farm and raised his family here until moving into Creston in 1973.
He was predeceased by his wife Mae in 1997; parents Edith and William and his two brothers.
Wes will be lovingly remembered by his five sons, Ken, Don, Len, Doug and Ron and their families and his companion of fourteen years, Joyce Retzlaff.
The Funeral Service was held Monday July 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating.

Mah, Yu Yee
Yu Yee Mah passed away on June 18th, 2012 in the Creston Valley Hospital at the age of 94 years.
Yu was born at her family home in Toysan, China and received her education in a two-room school.
She was married and started a family at age 19 before becoming widowed at age 27 ( 1944 ). Yu never remarried and remained very busy raising the two children. In 1959 she immigrated to Canada with her sons, settling in the Creston Valley at her father’s farm, Sun Kee Farms, where she lived ever since.
Yu will be lovingly remembered be her two sons Altin (Faye) Wong and Dean (Cindy) Wong; five grandchildren Sue Wong of Burnaby, B.C., Chark ( Carol ) Wong of Burnby,B.C., Decia Wong of Burnaby, B.C., MeLaine Wong of Sydney, Australia and Hanley Wong of Duncan, B.C. and two great-grandchildren Brandon and Sarah Wong of Burnaby, B.C., children of Carol and Chark.
The Funeral Service was held Monday, June 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Greentree officiating. Interment followed the service at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erickson, B.C.
