BERWICK - Helen Jean (nee Crosby). August 6, 1908 to August 1, 2000. "Mambo" died peacefully Tuesday morning. Predeceased by her husband Bob. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her son John (Maureen), their children Geoff (Laurie), Tracy (Dave), Kelly (Greg), Steve (Krista) and great- grandchildren Cassandra and Alexandra, Michael and Courtney, Gage and Clara, and Emma; her daughter Margaret and her son Ed (Jill) and their children Danielle, Dorothy, and Elizabeth. Helen was born in Vancouver and grew up on Wolfe Ave.. She moved to Toronto where she got her degree in dietetics and there she met Bob. They moved to Vancouver spending most of their time in West Vancouver and some years on the farm in Langley. She will be remembered forever for her generosity, hospitality, and the beautiful gardens she created. HURRELL - Tom Peter. Formerly of Bel Air Transportation. Died August 3, 2000 after a courageous fight with cancer. He will be sadly missed by many of his customers and classic car enthusiasts. Survived by his wife Carole and mother Joyce. DRYDEN - Isabel (1888-2000). Peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on Thursday (2:00 a.m.), July 2, 2000 in her 112th year. Isabel was born in Ontario on October 16, 1888. Predeceased by her husband Guy Dryden in 1955. She is survived by her loving family, son Douglas Dryden (Ruth Williams), North Vancouver; daughter Elaine (Stewart) Gibson, Victoria; granddaughters Heather (Frank) Bos, Lee Anne Stark, Sheryl Dryden, Cathy Dryden; grandson David Dryden; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer and Shelby. A dedicated and much loved school teacher for nine years before her marriage to Guy in December, 1917. Isabel was a longtime member of the United Church of Canada. Her unfaltering faith, love of life, determination and strength will be sadly missed by a large circle of relatives and friends. A celebration of Isabel's life will be held on August 9, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Broadway Pentecostal Lodge, 1377 Lamey's Mill Rd., Vancouver, B.C. V6H 3S9. Flowers are gratefully declined. YEOMAN - Sylvia. Passed away August 1, 2000. She was born in Pelton, England on September 9, 1931. Sylvia is survived by her sister Irene of Broadstone, England; her sons Michael and Chris; their wives Sandra and Lisa, and granddaughter Odeya. BURKHOLDER - Muriel Anna (nee Hatton). Muriel Burkholder, an active member of Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, passed away on August 1, 2000 in Clearwater, B.C. at age 57. Muriel is survived by her husband Gary and children David (Melanie) Burkholder of Kamloops, Sandra Burkholder (Christopher Newton) of Barriere and Thomas Burk-holder (Stephanie Lee) of San Francisco. She is survived by five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Eagle Harbour Yacht Club in September. THOMPSON - Paul Edward. Passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 25, 2000 at the age of 87 years. He is survived by his son Ron (Judy) of Burnaby, daughter Pat (Mike) Keegan of Nelson and three grandchildren Bryce, Aaron and Michelle. Paul was predeceased by his loving wife Helen, sister Irene and brother Gerald. Retired from the Bank of Montreal after many years of service. SMITH Marie (Dick). Born on February 5, 1924, in Wawanesa, Manitoba. Passed away quietly with her loving family at her side on Friday, July 28, 2000 in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Marie will be greatly missed but remembered always by Bob, her devoted husband of 54 years, and her children Ramona (Jess) Ketchum, Bobbie (Craig) Stenersen, Guy (Janice) Smith and Terry (Len) Hills. Her grandchildren, Krista, Kylie, Toby, Murray and Jeffrey provided her great joy and Marie was recently blessed with the opportunity to spend time with Taylor, her first great-grandchild. Marie was also blessed by being born into a close-knit, fun loving family that was always involved in sports and social events. She was predeceased by her brother Clifford Dick and sister Bea and brother-in-law Roy Angus, and will be in the thoughts always of sisters Marg Simcox, Edie (Denny) Cory, Eleanor (Clarence) Dahl, sister-in-law Ellen Dick and many nieces and nephews. Marie's life was devoted to her family and she enjoyed nothing more than those wonderful times when family would gather together to celebrate, whether the reason was apparent or not. Marie's family will once again come together in a celebration of Marie's life as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, aunt and person. The family wishes to thank the staff of Lions Gate Hospital who made a difficult time much easier. CRAWFORD - William Henry (Bill). Passed away peacefully at Cedarview Lodge, North Vancouver, B.C. on July 26, 2000. Born in Toronto on January 8, 1908, Bill was predeceased by his wife Jean Nicol in 1991 and is survived by his children John W. H. Crawford F.C.A. (Alison) of West Vancouver, Judy Nash (Charles) of Collingwood, Ontario, Bradley E. Crawford Q.C. (Diana) of Toronto, and by his seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren in North Vancouver, Parksville, Victoria, Stouffville and Campbelville, Ontario, and Economy, Nova Scotia. Bill had moved to Vancouver from Toronto in 1949 with the T. Eaton Company and remained in Vancouver after his retirement in 1973. LEDOYEN - JEAN MARIA.On Thursday July 20, 2000 at Evergreen House. Mrs. Jean Ledoyen of North Vancouver, B.C., formerly of Winnipeg, passed away at the age of 68 years. Jean was predeceased by her husband John in 1978. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter Monique Ledoyen of North Vancouver, B.C.; son Laurence, daughter-in-law Cathy and grandson Kyle of Winnipeg. In keeping with Jean's wishes, cremation took place in North Vancouver. A private family service will be held with interment to follow at a future date in Winnipeg. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ruth Campling, the staff and volunteers of the Lions Gate Hospital Palliative Care Unit and Evergreen House for their compassionate care for Mom during her illness. TOMLINSON - George Henry, Our Husband, Dad, Grandfather, Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend passed away peacefully July 29, 2000, surrounded by loved ones. George lived a full and happy life. Born March 12, 1923, in Edmonton, Alberta, his family moved to North Vancouver in 1935. George began his Sheet Metal Apprenticeship at the Burrard Dry Dock Co. Limited. during World War ll. In 1956 during the construction of Alcan in Kitimat, B.C., George met his wife, Alberta. They were married on July 28, 1956. George continued his career in Toronto and Winnipeg. George and Alberta spent some of their best times at "The Cottage" at Netley Creek, Petersfield, MB. George retired in 1987 from Westeel Rosco Ltd. in Edmonton, Alberta and returned to his beloved West Coast. Survived by his wife Alberta of New Westminster and his stepmother Edith Zagol of North Vancouver. His father, also George Henry, a North Vancouver MLA in the 1950's, predeceased George. He is also survived by his children: Sherry (David) Kidd of Richmond, Dawn (Hugh) Lamont of Surrey, Colleen Tomlinson and George H. (Chris) Tomlinson, all of Winnipeg. His grandchildren: Catharine (Troy) Pavan of North Vancouver, Chris (Tracy) Dunsford of New Westminster, and Todd (Cathy) Phillips of Calgary. His brothers: Ralph (Carol) of New Westminster, Gordon (Freda) of Nanaimo, Ray (Charlene) of Annacis Island, and Richard (Sheryl) of North Vancouver. His sisters: Betty (Don) Thomson and Mildred (Howard ) Henn, all of North Vancouver. He is predeceased by his sister Phyllis and her husband John Kelly. George is also survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins and many, many longtime friends. The family would also like to thank Dr. Sanghera and the staff at Royal Columbian Hospital 5 South for their untiring efforts and support. At George's request there will not be a service. MARITS - DR. MALDUS. Passed away peacefully at home on 28 July, 2000 surrounded by his family. He was born in Estonia on 02 April, 1924 in Vana Antsla, Estonia. Dr. Marits is survived by his wife Katrin, his three sons Karl, John and Arvo, and by his brother Arvo, of Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Marits came to Vancouver in 1951. He completed his medical degree at UBC in 1958. During his undergraduate years he spent the summer months as a lifeguard at Vancouver's Third beach. Dr. Marits practised medicine in Vancouver and the North Shore from 1959 until his retirement in 1991. Besides devoting his life to the practise of medicine, Dr. Marits was also an active member of the Vancouver Estonian Society and a former member of the Estonian Council of Canada. He dedicated his life to the dream of seeing his country of birth regain it's independence - a dream which was realized in 1991. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 4, at St. Peter's Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6520 Oak St., Vancouver. A reception will be held at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dr. Marits' name to Lions Gate Hospital for the benefit of Chemotherapy treatments, or to St Peter's congregation. Dr. Marits will be remembered for his kindness and compassion toward his many friends, patients and colleagues.
