Coutts, Roderick ( Rod )
Roderick Robert ( Rod ) Coutts passed away at the Crestview Village Care Facility on November 14th, 2011 at the age 91 years after a lengthy illness. He was born to Mary and James Coutts on February 2nd, 1920 on the family farm near East Bay, Manitoba, receiving his formal education at the local country school.
Rod married Dorothy Caverly on October 8th, 1940 and then joined the army, serving his country for five years. He was a jack of all trades, a good mechanic, businessman, school bus driver and labourer. In Elkhorn, MB, Rod was on the Town Council, Fire Chief, volunteer ambulance driver and member of the Royal Canadian Legion. The couple moved to Creston in 1978 and he worked in the local orchards for several years before retiring. Rod was a member of the Creston Rock & Mineral Club, Royal Canadian Legion Br#29, Eagles Club and the Creston Square Dance Club. After retirement, he enjoyed travelling, exploring the mountains and Ainsworth Hotsprings.
He was predeceased by his parents Mary and Jim, two brothers Jim and Earl, three sisters Alice, Mary and Jean and one son Alan. Rod will be dearly missed by loving wife Dorothy ( Dodie ), five children Carolyn ( Wayne ), Larry ( Betty ), Diana ( Larry ), Cindy ( Paul ), Ellen Rae ( Wes) , twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild.
The Memorial Funeral Service was held on Saturday November 19th, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel, Creston, B.C. with Lorraine Doeleman officiating. Cremation preceded the service.

Powers, Edward Manning
Edward Manning Powers, beloved husband of Marjorie Powers, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Crest View Care Village in Creston on February 3, 2012, at the age of 90 years.
Manning, as known to family and friends, was born at the Kootenay Lake Hospital, in Nelson on April 20, 1921. He received his grade nine education in Lister, B.C. where he resided with his parents Fred & Margery Powers on the family farm until enlisting with the Royal Canadian Air Force in May of 1941.
On November 20, 1951, he married Marjorie Martin in Creston, and made Creston their home, where they raised their two children Jim and Judy (Kriese). Manning took up his career as a Customs & Excise Officer from 1950 to 1981 at Rykerts Port of Entry.
Manning had been an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #29 for many years, and had served as the financial assistance officer for over 26 years, giving support to war veterans who were in financial difficulty. He had served in almost every capacity in the Legion organization and in 1976 was awarded the Legion’s highest honor, the Meretorious Medal for outstanding service. Manning also served as a director of the Swan Valley Lodge. In 1982 he was honoured with Creston’s Citizen of the Year title.
Fishing on Kootenay Lake, as well as hunting waterfowl and big game in the Creston valley were favourite sports of Manning. Many hours were spent in his workshop creating household furniture items, as well as gifts for the grandchildren. Once retired, he and Marjorie enjoyed travelling across Canada, seeing Alaska and the Yukon, as well spending winter months in Arizona.
He was predeceased by his parents Fred Powers and his mother Margery Powers in 1986.
Manning will be sadly missed by his wife Marjorie, son Jim, and daughter Judy (Dave) Kriese of Creston, granddaughter Karla (Jason) Schubert and great-granddaughter Madison of Enderby, B.C. and granddaughter Lauren (Steve) Gadicke of Fort St. John, B.C.

Domke, Edward (Ed)
Edward ( Ed ) R. Domke , a resident of Lister, B.C. died at the Creston Valley Hospital on February 8th, 2012 at the age of 81 years. He was born to Wilhelmina and Adolf Domke on August 15th, 1930 at Camp Lister, B.C.
Ed married Elizabeth Millner on May 28th, 1955 in Lister, B.C., where the couple farmed and raised their family. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and an avid fisherman and gardener.
He was predeceased by his parents Wilhelmina and Adolf Domke, brother Daniel and sisters Clara, Mary and Eva. Ed will be sadly missed by his wife Elizabeth of 56 years, children Brian ( Sharie ), Lorraine ( Gerry ) Wiest, Dorothy Roth ( John Reed ), Maureen ( Ted ) Yerbury, Daniel (Marie) and Sheila Sweet ( Bob MacLean); sixteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister Martha Willard, brothers Theodore ( Margaret ) and Eric ( June ).
The Memorial Service was held on Monday February 13th, 2012 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating. Interment of ashes followed in the Lister Anglican All Saints Cemetery, Lister, B.C. Tolling of the Bell by grandchildren.

Hamel, Laurette
The family of Laurette Hamel sadly announce that her journey on earth was completed on January 19, 2012. Laurette was born on August 13, 1933 to Cecile and William Hamel in Frenchville, SK, where she received her education and was married. They bought a farm in Glenworth, SK where they began raising their four children. The family later moved to Regina, SK and once her children were grown, she came to B.C. to be closer to her daughters and other brothers and sisters. Laurette volunteered at the Creston Valley Hospital Tuck Shop, craft fairs and natural health expos. She enjoyed music, dancing and playing cards. She also was apart of a book study group with friends and attended church regularly. Her family, children and grand children were most important to her.
She was predeceased by her parents, Cecile and William Hamel. Laurette will be dearly missed by her four children, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grand children and three great, great-grandchildren and seven sisters and brothers.
The memorial service was held for Laurette on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the G F Oliver Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating. Interment of ashes to take place in Saskatchewan at a later date.

SPINK, Alan
Passed away on Saturday, January 28th, 2012 at the age of 80. Al is survived by his wife Joyce of 59 and a half years, and daughters Denise (Hans), Kim (Kevin), son Mark (Jacqueline, Alex and Matthew) and sister Doris Donaldson. Al was born in Calgary and went to school in Ogden. He worked for the CPR, Neonex, United Trailers and Custom Structures. Al and Joyce retired early to B.C, first to Tappen and then settled in the community of Wynndel.
Al was a craftsman. In Calgary he was an active member of Canoe Club and raced and built beautiful cedar strip canoes. He also made canoe and kayak paddles and racing kayaks. When Joyce and Al retired to Tappen, he built their retirement home. Al became a beekeeper, and participated in the annual fall fairs, competing, winning and eventually judging the honey competition. Al was an accomplished gardener and knowledgable fruit grower who generously shared his harvest with family and friends. Al was also a wood carver. He carved birds of prey and local water fowl and Joyce painted the carvings. In Wynndel, Al was an enthusiastic board member and volunteer of the Wynndel Community Centre and was always willing to lend a hand to help others and apply his building and carpentry skills to improve facilities. He was a supporter of the Wynndel Coffee House and member of the Monday Music nights. His interest in music led him to learn to build and play the mandolin and he often jammed with friends at the Coffee House and other events. Al was extremely active in retirement and enriched the communities he lived in. He leaves behind many friends and will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Al's life will be held on Sunday, March 4, 1-5 pm at the Wynndel Community Centre. Friends and family are invited to share their stories and play some music. Jack Conrad Wigen
June 14, 1928 ~ November 19, 2011
Jack Conrad Wigen, a lifelong resident of Wynndel, B.C. passed away November 19, 2011 at the Creston Valley Hospital.
The eldest of four children, Jack was born June 14, 1928 in the Nelson hospital. He began his education at the Wynndel School, graduating from Creston Valley High School with the class of '47. After completing his formal education at the University of Idaho in 1951, Jack returned to Wynndel to work with his Father, Monrad, towards building the sawmill into a thriving family business. Jack was very proud of the contribution Wynndel Box & Lumber made to the economy of the valley. Reaping the fertile land on the Wynndel flats was equally as inspiring to him and sharing the bounty with others brought him great pleasure and satisfaction. He was well known by many as a true philanthropist.
In high school Jack excelled in sports such as track and basketball. He played several instruments and enjoyed reminiscing about his days in the dance band. Another favourite memory of Jack's was participating in the Salmo-Creston Trek July, 1952 to promote building the highway.
Some of his many interests included challenging the stockmarkets, piloting aircraft, skiing, horses, guns, art and poetry. But his main interest was people. He was an engaging conversationalist... meeting new people wherever he went, while lifelong friends always remained predominant in his life.
Jack served on the board of directors of Wynndel Irrigation District, Wynndel Co-op Fruit Growers and Wynndel Recreation Society. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Lions International and currently a member of C.V. Rotary Club and President of the Cranbrook Gyro Club.
Predeceased by his parents Monrad and Rose Wigen, Jack will be remembered by his companion Sheila McDonald of Creston; daughter Susan (Eskil) Jorgensen of Creston; son Michael (Mary) of Wynndel; five grandchildren Shawna, Larissa, Colt, Kena and Connor; two great-grandchildren Meredith and Xavier; two brothers Bob (Retia) Wigen of Wynndel, Dick (Vera) Wigen of Castlegar; one sister Donna (Ed) Chorney of Kelowna, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Funeral Service was held on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at the Creston Room of the Creston and District Community Centre.

ROBERT DUDLEY ROGERS
Feb. 10, 1931 – January 29, 2012
Bob passed away at the Creston Valley Hospital on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at the age of 80 years, with family by his side.
Bob was born to Dud and Margaret Rogers on February 10, 1931 at Walla Walla, Washington. He spent his entire life in the beautiful Creston Valley; attending the West Creston School from grades 1-5; and the Creston Valley High School from Grades 6-12. Bob loved animals and enjoyed swimming, fishing, hiking, and playing sports. Bob went to Olds College in 1951/52 to study Agriculture Management. He loved to play basketball during his school years and continued to play through most of his adult life. Bob treasured his childhood friends and memories of their fun times together.
Bob married the love of his life, Hazel Kopitoski, on American Thanksgiving - November 27th, 1953, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho . Bob farmed his entire life - raising cattle, alfalfa and grain crops. He loved his family and friends; playing cards, doing puzzles, swimming, and was also an avid reader with a brilliant mind. Bob enjoyed gardening and will be remembered for his prize winning corn and sharing his delicious garden produce with family, friends, and neighbors. He was a member of the Reclamation Water District, Beef Grower’s Association, West Creston Community Hall, and Elks Club.
He was predeceased by his father, Eugene Dudley Rogers, on February 20 , 1974, and his mother, Margaret Rogers, on December 9 , 1995. Bob will be dearly missed by his wife, Hazel, of 58 years; sister Susan King (George Bondaroff) of Chase, B.C.; and children; Darcell Rogers (John Wolff) of Calgary, AB; Audrey (Terry) Mortensen of Picture Butte, AB; and Mark Rogers (Cathy Rockwell) of Creston; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend grateful appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and employees who delivered exemplary care to Bob. No funeral service will be held.
