John Murray Ryckman
July 26, 1957 – March 24, 2012

John was born and raised in Creston, B.C., the fifth child of Jack and Phyllis Ryckman. His siblings are Cathy, Val, Doug, Gloria, Cindy and Art. Growing up he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family, and inherited his father’s love of gardening. Through his teen years, John struggled with fear and depression and at 24 when he hit bottom, he asked God to take his life. God did take it– He took John as His own child, making him new in Christ. Instead of death, John found life.

John and Diane met in May 1983, and the following year were married. Through John’s job with highway construction they moved throughout B.C. Rachel was born in Chilliwack, Jennifer in Prince George, John Daniel in Ladysmith, and Timothy in Campbell River. In 1993 John quit his job and moved his family back to Creston, where Sarah, Andrew, Benjamin and Kaitlin joined their family.

In the fall of 1997, John had an accident that would forever change his life. He referred to this accident as his “wake-up call” and the LORD used it to bring into sharper focus His relationship with John and John’s need to depend on Him. From this time forward, in John’s words, pain became his constant companion.

Throughout his life, John’s love for the outdoors, his love for his neighbour, his love for his family, and his love for his LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ was evident to all who knew him. His life was characterized by an ever growing dependency on God and a deep desire to live as God would have him live.

On March 24, 2012, while working in the outdoors that he loved, while taking care of the family that he loved, John was suddenly swept from this life into the presence of the Saviour whom he loved. He is now free from pain, and though we, his family, miss him so much, we know it is only for a time.

We will see him again.

In lieu of flowers a monetary tribute can be made to the John Ryckman Memorial Fund established by the family through Creston Baptist Church with the aim of helping support those with a heart to "go into all the world and make disciples of all nations..."

Lorne was a member of the Creston Curling Club, the Rod and Gun Club and President of the Golf Club. He loved almost anything outdoors including: fishing, hunting, skiing, camping, cutting wood, biking, hiking and long walks with his wife. Some of his favourite pastimes were wood working, intarsia, making toys for his grandchildren and bread making.

Lorne was predeceased by his parents Edna and Fred Carston along with his brothers Carl and Bill.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of nearly 50 years, Helen; son Kirk (Lori); daughter Heather (Luis); grandchildren Ally, Danelle, Dallas, Ben and Sanni; sister Dot Creighton of Penticton, BC; brother Pat of Vancouver, B.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stefania Wojtkow
1921 – 2012

Steffie was born on November 6, 1921 in Luslawice, Krakof, Poland. She was the 7th of 10 children. Steffie was trained in First Aid and worked in a casualty clinic, assisting wounded soldiers, for three weeks when the Russians took over the clinic on September 2, 1939. She was 17 years old. Steffie was deported and interned by the Russians. She was sent to Siberia with over 1.5 million other Poles. These were camps with no shelter or supplies and many died there.

After 1941, when Russia became an ally of Britain, Steffie joined the Polish Forces (Women’s Services) in USSR on September 12, 1941. She came under British command from April 1, 1942, when she crossed the Russo/Iranian border with her unit. Steffie served in the Middle East in 1942 and in the United Kingdom from 1942 until October 9, 1946. She served with the Polish Resettlement Corps from October 10, 1946 until July 16, 1948. She had traveled to the Red Sea, Palestine, Africa and the British Isles.

In Edinburgh, Steffie was employed with the Signal Corps. She answered the telephone, sent and received morse code and handled secret messages. She earned the rank of Staff Sergeant at this time. Steffie remembers continuous 6:00 am – 10:00 pm workdays. Besides her Sergeant Stripes she also earned the World War II and the King George VI Defense medals. She received her Honourable Discharge on July 16, 1948. She was very proud of her military career and officer status. She assisted Polish soldiers to choose new countries to move to after the war and followed their lives.

Steffie left Edinburgh in February 1952 on the ship ESCANA for Halifax. She then went by train to Creston to meet her long-time pen pal Stanley Wojkow. On March 6, 1952 Stanley met her train and there was so much snow Steffie thought that she was in Siberia!. Stanley was employed at the Crestbrook Mill and owned five acres of land (this was the land between 20th and 25th avenues)

After their marriage, Steffie worked at the mill for 4 winters and spent her summers working in the orchard. She was a very hard worker and she and Stanley prospered from their hard work.

In 1967 part of the orchard was sold for a new subdivision. That year Steffie and Stanley also built their house that Steffie lived in on 22 avenue. Stanley passed away in 1984.

On June 12, 2011, Stefanie Wojtkow received the Siberian Cross at a ceremony at the Creston Legion. She was very proud of the medal she received from the Polish Consul General.

Steffie was a long time member of the TAPS program. She was wise and kind and many asked her for her opinion. She was honest, straight forward and supportive. Staff and members sought her opinion and valued her contributions. Steffie often called TAPS her family.

She will be missed by many.

A Funeral Mass was held for Steffie on Wednesday April 18th, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Tom Kakkaniyil officiating.
