Widzyk, Anna

Anna Widzyk ( nee Borgosz )

With much love and great sadness we announce the passing of our mother on April 14th, 2013 at her Swan Valley Lodge residence with children by her side. She will be missed by all who knew her indomitable spirit, her warm, loving friendship and her passion for life. Anna’s life was not easy, but she accepted its challenges with hard work and determination. Anna was born in Andrychow, Poland to Catherine and John Borgosz on July 5th, 1923. She had to leave schoool at age 11 and went to work. When war came to Poland, she was 16 years of age. She married her sweetheart Maks Widzyk so they could stay together when they were taken to Germany in to forced labour. Three children were born in a German labour camp. After the war, the family immigrated to Canada, Maks first in 1948, to work in a gold mining camp in Northern Ontario. Anna and the three children followed in January 1949. Anna came to love Canada because as she said “in Canada, you could become whatever you wanted. In 1950, the family moved to Coleman, AB, where two more daughters were born. In 1957, they moved to the two acre farm in Creston, that has been Anna’s home ever since. She loved the place and put down deep roots. She was employed in the housekeeping dept. of the Creston Valley Hospital for 25 years, where she was well liked and respected.

She was predeceased by her husband Makes in 1974. Anna will be dearly missed by her five children Erwin, Kas ( Camille), Erika ( Greg), Sophia and Florence(Doug), and three grandchildren Stephanie, Jeffrey and Guy Michel, and three great grandchildren.

Deepest thanks from all the family to Dr. LeRoux, the caring staff of the Swan Valley Lodge Harris Unit, Swan Valley Adult Day Care, Creston Hospital and also to the volunteers of the lunch program at the United Church.

Also a huge thank you to Frankie and Benny for their help over the years.

Friends wishing to make a memorial contribute in Anna’s name may do so to the Swan Valley Lodge – Equipment Program PO Box 1880, Creston, BC V0B 1G0

A private family interment of ashes to take place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC at a later date.

Duryea, Peter

Peter Duryea, beloved long-time resident of the Eastshore community, on Kootenay Lake, died peacefully at his Gray Creek home in the early hours of Sunday, March 24. His partner and wife, Jan Bryan, as well as his daughter Star, were with him continuing in the support, companionship and love that they offered through Peter’s health challenges of the last five years.

Born in New York, July 14, 1939, grew up in Los Angeles; Peter came to Canada in 1974 and made his home with Jan and Star, in Gray Creek since 1980. Peter was predeceased by his parents Dan and Helen Duryea. In addition to his immediate family of Jan and Star, Peter has a brother, Richard (Lorraine) and nephew and godson Derrian, mother inlaw Millie Bryan, sisters and brothers’ inlaw, Bill, Pat and Bill, Nancy and Doug, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the large community who will miss the light of his face and voice when he spoke of the wonder of this world and who will be forever touched by his profound gratitude for the gift of life. Those who were fortunate to know Peter met someone dedicated to finding ways to contribute to the well-being of the natural world and all the life that belongs to it.

During his professional life in California, Peter appeared in 22 Television shows, several movies and many plays. Touring with a theatre group in the 70’s Peter guided presentations that inspired audiences throughout southern BC to awaken to the earth’s need for love and care in the face of environmental degradation. He gathered allies to form the Eastshore Environmental Council, committed to education and action on environmental issues in our area, as well as the Forest Council. He organized and led community forums and sessions to guide residents to visioning the kind of community they wanted and to finding ways to manifest their ideals. Guiding Hands Recreation Society and the Tipi Camp gave hundreds of people an opportunity to be immersed in the wonder and teachings of the natural world and be forever changed for the better because of it.

An accomplished movie maker, Peter directed many video projects. He especially valued one that documented the creation of and elders living facility in Salmon Arm, showing the importance and value of keeping elders in their community near friends and family when they are no longer able to live independently. He brought this vision to the Eastshore and worked for many years as chair and board member of Kootenay Lake Eastshore Eldercare Cooperative Association. The powerhouse of that group, Peter exhausted every possibility through years of effort to try to manifest this vision.

When his lungs were damaged with an infection and Peter had to be on oxygen support, he began writing a support manual to help others who face the same challenge to navigate the needs and requirements of the situation more easily. He never stopped looking for ways to be of use and to contribute positively. He also never stopped finding joy in the beauty of the world.

According to Peter’s wishes, a private small burial was held in Gray Creek. A Celebration of Life may follow at a date to yet be determined.
