Mrs. Jean Catherine, died suddenly on May 22, 2002, at Fairview Nursing Home at the age of 78. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, sons Bill Thomson of Richmond, British Columbia,, John Thomson of Brandon, Manitoba, daughter Laura Jean (Garth) McDonald of Brandon, Manitoba, and sister Margaret Olson, also of Brandon. Her memory will also be cherished by her special grandchildren: Chelsea and Graham Thomson and Sharla and Tyler McDonald, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jean was born on August 16, 1923 in Brandon, to Gordon and Peggy (Eades) MacPhail. Jean attended Fleming, Earl Oxford, Brandon Collegiate and St. Michael’s Academy schools. In her earlier years she worked at the Brandon Sun, Underwriters Adjustment Bureau, and finally the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation until her retirement. Jean married John (Ty) Wilfred Thomson in June 1947, at Knox United Church in Brandon. She belonged to the Quota Club of Brandon and was an avid bridge player. She had a wonderful sense of humor. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and friends up at her cabin at Clear Lake. Jean was predeceased by her father and mother, Gordon and Peggy MacPhail, husband Ty Thomson and sister, Barbara Ann Betson. Funeral service was held on May 27, 2002 at Knox United Church in Brandon, Manitoba with Bill Burgess officiating. A private family interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 437-9th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4A9 or to a charity of your choice. McKNIGHT
Jean Gwendolyn Mcknight (1909-2002) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Central Park Lodge in Brandon, Manitoba. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Winnie and Elmo Wrye and her loving husband, Earl. She leaves to mourn her passing her sister: Eleanore Tillotson, niece Carol Down (Gary), nephew, Robert Tillotson (Shirlee) of Winnipeg and their families to which she was devoted. Cousins Sheridon Wade (Marion) and Gwen Hockley of Brandon, also survive. Despite her deafness Jean enjoyed a career working 26 years for W. R. McLaughlin Accounting firm as a bookkeeper. In 1964, she and Earl were married and had 30 good years together until his death in 1995. Jean was an extraordinary woman who overcame her deafness by helping others with hearing disabilities. She was awarded the Quota Club’s “Deaf Woman of the Year” in 1980 for her pioneer work in lip reading. She had a wonderful sense of humor and will be remembered by all who knew her for her positive outlook on life under extreme personal difficulties. The family would like to thank the staff at central Park Lodge for their outstanding care of Jean during the past year and a half. There will be no formal memorial service, but a family graveside service will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice or to the First Baptist Church, 3881 Park Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7B 3Y6 would be appreciated. WATERS
Levern William (Bill) Waters Peacefully at the Winnipegosis General Hospital, Levern Waters passed away May 31st, 2002, one day short of his 91st birthday. He was born June 1st, 1911 in Mountain Home Idaho, to Emma and Burton Waters. Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife Nell, step-daughter Gail Hickman, grandson Dillon Waters, parents Burton and Emma Waters, brother Donald and wife Ellen, brothers Milton and Roy. He is survived by son Byron (Florence) Waters, daughters Sylvia (Bob) Terry, Jo (Walter) Bunka and son Gary (Pat) Waters, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Bill farmed in Roblin, Manitoba, worked in British Columbia mines, bought grain for the National Grain Co. and operated a general store in Shelvin, Manitoba. He joined the army in 1943, served in England and Holland until the end of WWII. He then again bought grain for the National Grain Co. and farmed in Fork River, Manitoba. Bill and Nell operated the MacLeod's store in Carberry from 1963 until their retirement. Bill served as Mayor of Carberry and chairman of the Hospital Board. He was an active member of the Legion, Masonic Lodge and Drop-In Centre. At the time of his passing, he was writing his 4th book. Funeral service was held June 6th at the Carberry United Church with interment in the Carberry Plains Cemetery. The Waters family wish to thank the doctors and staff at Carberry and Winnipegosis hospitals for their loving care of their dad. Thank you also to Rev. Peggy Reid, the United Church Minister; the Royal Canadian Legion and the Masonic Lodge for their participation in our celebration of Bill's life. WIGHTMAN
Winifred Alexandra Wightman (Day) of Fairview Home, Brandon, passed away at her residence on June 6, 2002. Win was born on April 12, 1908 at Fairfax, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her husband, Wally Wightman; parents, Ted and Emily Day; two sisters, Marjorie and Dorothy; and two brothers, Edward and Harry. Win is survived by daughter, Lois (Jack) Cameron; three grandchildren: Doug (Teresa) Cameron, Beverly Cronshaw and Linda (Henry) Cheng; seven great-grandchil dren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law Gladys Day and nieces and nephews. Private family committal will be held with a memorial service to follow at a later date at St. George’s Anglican Church. Heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor at Fairview Home for the wonderful care mom received. John Esplin passed away peacefully on July 28, 2002 at Riverdale Personal Care Home at 70 years of age. Funeral service will be held at Rapid City United Church Thursday, August 1, 2002 at 2 p.m. Interment will be held at Rapid City Cemetery. Sparrow Funeral Service in care of arrangements.

Catherine Christina passed away on Monday, July 29 at home with her family at her side in Brandon after a courageous battle with cancer. Kay enjoyed her flowers, artwork, family and friends. She will be loved and missed by her daughters Darlene (Gene) Bird of Brandon, Shirley (Victor) Martens of Regina, special friend and companion Alex Tweed of Brandon, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral Service was held in Medora, Manitoba at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2002. Interment in the Medora Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home, Deloraine, in care of arrangements.

William (Bill). Veteran Pilot R.C.A.F. WWII, Member of Royal Canadian Legion, Oakville Branch #114 and Civilian Member of Halton Regional Police. Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Bill, beloved husband of the late Maureen (Kennedy) Selbie, dear father of Don and his wife Pat, Doug and his wife Shirley, brother of May Maddess and Coleen Wallace, loving grandfather to John, David, Angela and Andrew. Visitation at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, August 1, 2002. Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2002 in the Chapel.
WELLS
George Andrew (Andy). Andy Wells, formerly of Wellwood, Manitoba, was born October 26, 1922 at 17-12-14W to John James and Ada (Whitmore) Wells. He died at his home in Summerland, British Columbia with his wife, Iris (Carter/Philpott), by his side, on July 26, 2002 after a long fight with cancer. Andy received his education at Wellwood and joined the army in 1940 serving with the Lake Superior Division. He married Gladys Beale of Brighton, England. They had four children, a daughter who died at birth; Jack (Delores) Wells, Charlotte, NC; Marjorie (Don) Bordush and Roy (Marcia) Wells, both of Brandon. Gladys and Andy were divorced in 1968. After the war, Andy worked for Bob Wells, then for the CPR and caretaker of Wellwood school. He taught us how to march for \"Field Day\" and had us so sharp that we won the marching for many years. Andy worked with the Wellwood Ball Club keeping the diamond in immaculate shape. He also looked after the rink, putting together a Zamboni on skis that made excellent ice. While at the rink he coached the hockey team for years giving sons Roy and Jack their starts as hockey players. Also, a visit with Andy and Iris meant a keen game of cribbage, one of his favourite card games. Andy married Iris Philpott and moved to Winnipeg in 1969 where he worked at Deer Lodge Hospital for many years as a male nurse. He retired in 1982 moving back to Wellwood where he took over keeping the town groomed and growing a showplace garden. Andy is survived by his wife, Iris, and her children, Ron (Dianne) Philpott and Dianne (Ted) Trimble of Summerland, British Columbia and their families. Andy was an adoring grandfather to grandchildren Marcie Wells, Willmington, NC; Jacqueline (Justin) Gold, Charlotte, NC; Dustin (Holly) Wells; and Lindsay Wells (Derek Bradley) of Brandon. He also had three great-grandchildren: Martin and Katlyn Gold and Tyler Bradley. Andy is survived by eight siblings: Winona (Tomie) Taverna, White Rock, British Columbia; Dawn (Ken) Graham, Erickson, Manitoba: Jim (Lorraine) Wells, Brandon, Manitoba; John (Audrey/Joyce) Wells, Kamloops, British Columbia; Charlie (Rose-Marie) Wells, Kamloops, British Columbia; Beth (Jim) Davidson, Smithers, British Columbia; Alex (Helen) Wells, Wellwood, Manitoba; Frances (Bill) Fraser, Neepawa, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his parents and baby sister, Joan Wells 1939-1943 as well as in-laws; Tomie Taverna, Ken Graham, Audrey and Joyce Wells. The family in Manitoba gathered in Brandon, August 1, at Roy’s home, to celebrate Andy’s life. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to, may give a donation to a charity of their choice in memory of Andy.
DRAPER
Ruth Isabelle (nee Nash) of Souris passed away peacefully in Souris Hospital on October 4, 2002 at the age of 79 years. Ruth was born in Deloraine on July 14, 1923. She worked at the Deloraine Theatre and Hasselfields Drugstore while going to school. After graduating she took two years of Home Economics at the University of Manitoba where she had been awarded a scholarship. After University she worked as a stenographer at the Veterans Land Act in Winnipeg and later gained employment at Canadian National Railroad. On November 10, 1962 she married Tom Draper of Elgin. Together they worked the family farm until their retirement to Souris in 1988 leaving the farm to their son Jim. One of her greatest joys was playing the organ for St. John's Anglican Church in Elgin and St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Souris. By far her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren Candace and Andrew. Countless hours were spent watching Andrew and running Candace back and forth to gymnastics, swimming lessons, and rugby not to mention the books read and stories told to both. Family get-togethers were also at the top of her list of priorities be it coming for suppers at the lake or just a nice family supper, Ruth was always there with a smile on her face, the smile that will forever shine in our minds. Ruth was predeceased by her parents Daniel and Mary Nash and her brother Dan as well as her mother and father-in-law Walter and Martha Draper and brother-in-law Harry Draper. Left to cherish the memories she left behind are her loving husband of 39 years Tom, son Jim (Kim), grandchildren Candace and Andrew, sisters-in-law Betty Nash, and Betty Draper as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth faced her illness with courage, perseverance and a strong faith in her Lord. She never once shed a tear for herself and her main concern right to the last was the welfare of her family. Her life was celebrated on October 8, 2002 in St. Paul’s United Church in Souris, Manitoba with interment in Elgin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Arrangements were with Kowalchuk's Funeral Home of Souris.
FOUBERT
Jim Foubert passed away peacefully October 10, 2002 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Jim was born December 26, 1921 in the R.M. of Dufferin to Zeb and Josephine Foubert. In 1947 Jim married Betty Marjorie Walmsley. Throughout the years they resided in Bisset, Manitoba, Salmo and Trail, British Columbia, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Scarth and Pipestone, Manitoba. Due to ill health in 1995, Jim then resided at Portage Lions Manor. He leaves to mourn his sons Rene (Karen), Michael (Arlene), daughters Michelle (Attahiru) Alfa and Lisa (Gary) Minshull. Seven grandchildren who will cherish his memory, Ismaila, Angela (Jason) McCutcheon, Aisha Kyle, Heather, and Justin. Three great-grandchildren, Sade, Madison, and Alyssa will be told what a great loving person he was. Brother’s Raymond (Elvi) Foubert of Lac du Bonnet, sisters-in-law Marie Foubert, Norma Walmsley, Joan Garnet, Dorothy (Sid) Walmsley, numerous nieces and nephews will cherish his memory. Funeral service will be held at the Elm Creek Catholic Church, in Elm Creek, Manitoba on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Edward S. Kosa O.M.I. officiating. Interment will take place in the Elm Creek Catholic Cemetery. In memory of Jim, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Unit 10, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4G2. HAWKINS
Selma O. Hawkins passed away at Brandon Regional Health Centre on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the age of 93 years. Selma was born on March 28, 1909 and grew up in the Clanwilliam area. After completing her public education at Lakelet School and Erickson Collegiate, she trained to be a nurse at Souris General Hospital. Postgraduate training at the Brandon Mental Hospital followed her graduation in 1930. At that time she had to move to the United States to find work. She worked as a RN at the Mayo Clinic and in several Chicago area hospitals. After the war she left nursing to accept a civilian position with the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, DC and following thirty years of service retired as Chief of her branch. Selma had a life long interest in lodge work and was an active member of both the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Assembly. She recently received her fifty-year membership pin from the Grand Chapter of the District of Columbia, Order of the Eastern Star. In 1985, she married Joseph C. Hawkins and moved from the District to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where they built their dream home. They spent fourteen happy years in Fredericksburg before Joe’s death in November 1999. Following his death Selma decided to return to her family in Canada. She lived at River Heights Terrace in Brandon until April 1, 2002 when she moved to Fairview Home. She remained there until her passing. Selma was predeceased by her mother, Elvina in 1958 and her father Charlie Oman in 1976, brother, Herman Oman in 1995, her sisters; Joyce Oman in 1925 and Irene Robertson in 1979. She is survived by her brother Harry (Margaret) Oman of Minnedosa; sisters, Mable Hillstrand and Viola Sillen, both of Erickson, and Evelyn McLennan of Brandon. Also surviving are special friends, Harrison and Virginia Groves of Fredericksburg; several nieces, nephews and their families. A time of visitation will take place at Memories Chapel on Sunday, October 13, 2002 from 7:00–8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will take place at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date at the Wilderness Baptist Church Cemetery in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Donations in memory of Selma may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
HILL
Harry John. Peacefully, with his family at his side, Harry passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at the Riverview Health Centre. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Bertha, daughter Florence and son-in-law Frank Puskar. Born in Carnegie, Manitoba in 1910, Harry spent the majority of his days farming at Alexander. He and Bertha retired to Brandon in 1977 and a few months ago moved to Winnipeg. In compliance with Harry’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A private interment will take place in the Alexander Cemetery at a later date. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of 3E in the Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion.
