EDWARDS

Gordon Clare, 92 years old, beloved husband of the late Mary Edwards, died in the Souris Health Centre on Thursday, April 3, 2003. Funeral service will be held from Kowalchuk’s Funeral Chapel, Souris, Manitoba on Monday, April 7, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Brandon, Manitoba. In memory of Gordon, donations may be made to the Souris Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

GULLETT

Helen Muriel (Clark). Our hearts are sad yet peaceful as we announce the passing of our “Nana” on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Nana, now is with her beloved Garner, with whom she spent 68 years, and has longed for his company since his passing. Helen was born on the family farm near Hilton on August 17, 1911. There she lived until she married Garner Gullett in 1930. In 1944, they bought a farm near Ninette where they lived and raised their family. Garner and Helen retired to Brandon in 1972. Helen spent hours in her yard and garden earning an award from Good Roads for Farm Yard and Garden Beautification. In her younger years, Helen enjoyed curling and following the Riverside Baseball team. Helen was predeceased by her husband Garner; youngest daughter Norma Vestby; her parents, Tom and May Clark; siblings Courtland, Perce, George, Mabel, Elsie, Edna Orr, Myrtle Jackson, Pearl Rice, Edith Fleming and Bertha Firby. Left to mourn are her son, Jack (Bernice); daughters May Dawley (Garth) and Eileen Leverington (Bill); son-in-law Vern Vestby; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers-in-law Joe (Charlotte) and Herb. A memorial service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 with Rev. Joan Jarvis of Central United Church officiating. Interment followed at the Ninette Cemetery. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to a charity of choice.

MARCQ

Albert J. Marcq, born in Deleau, Manitoba, March 6, 1915, passed away in Vancouver Hospital on April 3, 2003. Albert is survived by his wife Seraphine, two sons, two daughters and two brothers. Cremation has taken place.

NEWITT

Bernice Lily Newitt passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 23, 2003 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Bernice was born on September 1, 1915 at Rapid City, Manitoba, the youngest daughter of Richard and Mary Underhill. She moved with her parents to the farm at Moline, MB in 1920. She attended school at Moline and graduated from Rapid City High School. Bernice married Ray Newitt on October 14, 1939. They began farming at Moline in 1940 and farmed until Ray's passing in 1974. Bernice continued to live on the farm, enjoying the closeness of her family. She was an active member of the Moline community. In October 1993, Bernice moved to the Lion's Manor in Brandon. She enjoyed the morning coffee gatherings, shuffleboard, cards and being part of the “Manor” family. Bernice leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Barry (Beverley) Newitt, their children, Bruce (Jennifer) Newitt and Sheri (Bradley) Cholin; her daughter, Beverley (Norman) Bridgeman, and their children, Cindy (Ken) Nolan, Chad (Rhonda) Bridgeman, Marty (Kat) Bridgeman and Dallas (Cori) Bridgeman. She is also survived by six great- grandchildren, Cody and Courtney Nolan, Stefanie, Colby and Chase Bridgeman and Jayden Bridgeman and serveral nieces and nephews. Bernice was predeceased by her parents, beloved husband Ray, brother Ross (Evelyn) Underhill and sister Vera (Harvey) McKay. The Ceremony to Celebrate Bernice's life was held at Memories Chapel on March 28, 2003. Pastor Brian Kirsch of Faith Fellowship Baptist Church officiated. Interment followed at the Rapid City Cemetery. For those desiring, donations in memory of Bernice may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 2B7, Canadian Diabetes Association, Westman Region, B 727-10th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 4G7 or to a charity of one's choice.

Essie Mae Olafson of Birtle, Manitoba passed away at the Sunnyside Manor Personal Care Home, Birtle on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the age of 94 years. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from the Birtle United Church. Interment at Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg. SCOTT

Ken Scott, beloved husband of the late Noreen, passed away at his residence, Central Park Lodge on Tuesday, April 1, 2003. Ken was born at Hayfield, Manitoba on June 27, 1907. His early education was completed at Hebron School in Hayfield. He later attained B.A. and M.A. degrees from Brandon University (geology). Ken began a career in geology, but later returned to farming. In Ken Scott, family and friends saw someone who demonstrated a profound respect for wildlife, and a love of good books. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he maintained a lifelong interest in British history. Always interested in others, Ken’s capacity for friendships spanned all generations. Fifty years spent on his farm near Douglas were among his happiest. Ken is survived by his sister Marjorie Kirk of Calgary; his brother Bob Scott of Souris; nephews and nieces: Bill (Cindy) Scott of Hayfield, Craig (Donna) Scott of Souris, Scott Kirk of USA, Sharon (Dale) Parkinson, Tannis (Larry) Holland, Don (Jane) Kirk, and Stacy Kirk, all of Calgary. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Jean; and by his wife Noreen. A memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Monday, April 7, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Don Hudson of Knox United Church officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of Ken may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, 350 Michael Cowpland Dr., Kanata, Ontario K2M 2W1. SWAIKO

Stacey Renee Swaiko of Brandon, Manitoba and formerly of Swan River, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2003. Stacey was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 10, 1988 the daughter of Carla and Scott Swaiko. She attended school in Swan River at Swan River Junior High French Immersion and Heyes School. After relocating to Brandon, Stacey attended George Fitton and Kirkcaldy Heights schools. Stacey was always a happy child even when her health prevented her from being active. She cared very much about others and always enlightened the hearts of all she knew. Despite her illness, Stacey was active in Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides and was a member of the TY Beanie Baby Club. She loved to do crafts and stained glass artwork, as well as collecting her Beanie Babies and listening to the Back Street Boys and collecting their memorabilia. Stacey is survived by: her mother Carla Swaiko, step father Peter Rehaluk, father Scott Swaiko, sister Janice Swaiko (Dustin Hay), brother David Swaiko, and niece Madison Hay. She was predeceased by: her infant triplet siblings Jamie Lynn, John Allan and Leslie James, and grandparents Allan and Faye Miller. The Ceremony in Celebration of Stacey's life was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, February 27, 2003. Reverend Laird Russell-Yearwood of Central United Church officiated. Pallbearers were: Scott Miller, Dr. Jim Dyck, Steve Rondeau, Arnold Kerluke, Ryan Brock and Tyler Brock. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Stacey to the Ronald McDonald House, 566 Bannatyne Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3A 0G7 or to the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation, 1435 Princess Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 0R6.

Edward A. Trottier, beloved husband of the late Erma Trottier, passed away at Westman Nursing Home, Virden, Manitoba, on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at 89 years of age. McBURNEY

Ethel May McBurney (Nixon) passed away on July 31, 2003 in her 91st years. Ethel was born March 20, 1912 in Souris, Manitoba and spent all of her years in the Souris area. She attended Whitefield School in her early years and completed her education at the Souris Collegiate. Taught by her mother to play piano at the age of nine, one of her great joys was playing for school and church services, particularly those held at Millan School. Her love of music is just one of the legacies she has passed to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. As a young woman Ethel took summer work on a farm and later as a ward maid in the Souris Hospital. She loved to tease her caregivers at the Souris Personal Care Home about the days when she worked in a hospital making $8/month. By 1935 she had saved $24 and along with $50 given to her by her father, she was able to marry a young man whom she had met at a dance and been attending church with every Sunday. Melville Ewart McBurney and Ethel May Nixon were married on December 12, 1936 in Souris and began farming together in the Botany and Forbes Districts. In 1949 when they moved to their farm near Terence where they raised two sons, remaining until 1970. After retiring to Souris, Ethel spent her time caring for her home, her grandchildren and many others through part time work at the Victoria Park Lodge. She was a wonderful cook and loved to quilt with her friends and neighbors creating beautiful crafts for her family and friends. Both Ethel and Mel spent many hours tending their vigorous garden and sharing its bounty with family, friends and good neighbors. In her final years Ethel spent her time reading and continued to stitch her “fancywork” embroidery. She dearly enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren cherishing their visits and enjoying shopping trips, school concerts and country drives with then. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Mel, her sister Edna, brother Walter, parents William and Sarah Nixon (Jarvis) and great granddaughter Sydney McKinny. She is survived by sons Albert (Norma) of Ste. Angele de Monnoir, Quebec and Harvey (Peggy) of Souris, grandchildren and step grandchildren Crispin (Melissa) McBurney, Rick and Tony Levasseur of Ste. Angele de Monnoir, Beverly (Wayne) Boyko of Blackstone, Virginia and Brenda (Larry) McKinny, Margo (Shane) McBurney and D. J. McBurney of Souris. She is also survived by great grandsons Scott and Hayden McKinney, Matthew and Brendan Boyko and Brenden McCulloch and Brady Henuset. Ethel was a dedicated family member, a loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. A graveside service will be held Sunday, August 3, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements will be by Kowalchuk Funeral Home Souris. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to donate to the Souris Personal Care Home Courtyard Fund.

Olive Mary Turner of Erickson, Manitoba, passed away at the Erickson District Health Centre on Monday, July 25, 2003 at the age of 91 years. Olive is survived by sons: Ken (Diane) Turner of Brandon, Manitoba, Syd (Barb) Turner of Elgin, Manitoba, daughters Meryle Prescott of England, Kathleen (Stanley) Zatylny of Erickson, Manitoba, Shirley (Lloyd) Stansall of Penhold, Alberta, Helen (Butch) Heudelbourch of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Karen (Gordon) LaFournie of Brandon, Manitoba, 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, brothers: Syd Scott of Red Deer, Alberta, Vernon (Verna) Scott of Glenella, Manitoba, Castle (Ella) Scott, of Glenella, Manitoba, sisters Jean Bowditch of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Velma Anderson of Vancouver, British Columbia. Fran Doerksen died tragically at Osage County, Kansas on Sunday, November 30, 2003 age 54. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cartwright, Manitoba. Killarney Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Catherine (Cassey) Isabell, 83 years old, beloved wife of the late Doug Stuart, died in the Souris Health Centre on Sunday, November 30, 2003. Funeral service will be held from Faith Community Baptist Church, Souris, Manitoba on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the Carroll Cemetery.
