Alexander "Xande" Hyland, I.ENG. CET, CRSP, AFCASI, AMRAES
April 19, 1930 - October 23, 2004

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Xande Hyland of Winnipeg, on Saturday, October 23, 2004.

Xande is survived by his wife, Irene "Betty"; his four children, Mary Krieger (Kelvin), Anne Carey, William (Scelena) and Alan (Sharla); grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Jessica, Heather, Payton and Liam; and great-grandchild Emily. A light has gone from our lives.

Born in London, England on April 19, 1930, Xande attended London College of Choristers, Marylebone Grammar School and Southall Technical College. He apprenticed at Fairey Aviation before his National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. In 1956, Xande joined the Bristol Aircraft (Western) Ltd., coming to work in Winnipeg that year. Through his work, he became a familiar face at many Canadian fighter bases and the Directorate of Aircraft Maintenance & Engineering in Ottawa. He formed one of the first Plant Safety Committees in Manitoba qualifying as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional. Visitors to the Western Canadian Aviation Museum can view examples of his work in the aviation industry. An original member of the Manitoba Model Buffs chapter of the International Plastic Modellers Society, he displayed and judged scale models for IPMS and the Manitoba Model Soldier Society.

Xande loved singing, beginning as a boy chorister in 1935. He sang with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, the Festival Opera Singers, the Winnipeg Pops Chorus and many others. Xande helped found the Festival Opera Singers and sang in some of the first concerts of the Manitoba Opera. Piano bars and later karaoke allowed him to continue sharing his music with others. He will be remembered for the enjoyment he gave through his music and for his extensive knowledge, which he unstintingly shared with all who asked.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 29 at 1:30 pm. in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Xande’s memory may be made to any of the organizations he enjoyed in life.

Francisca (Frances) van Haaren (née Munsters)

Frances van Haaren passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, at Victoria General Hospital on August 27, 2004 with her son Peter at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Jan; sons Frank, John and Henk and thirteen brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son Peter; grandchildren David, Ricky, John, Brian, Michelle and Jennifer; great-grandchildren Stephan and Stephanie; daughter-in-law Valerie and 3 sisters-in-law, Mien, Bertha and Marietje and numerous nieces and nephews.

“Mom, Oma, Cisca, Tante Cis” was the matriarch of our family and lived up to her role with fervour, class and style. Her life was filled with many challenges, all of which she faced with courage and dignity. Her support to family in time of need was unparalleled.

In 1960, as a recent widow, Frances followed her three siblings, Piet, Martien and Dora and emigrated from Holland with her four sons. She traveled extensively with her favourite companion; her sister and best friend, Dora. Their stories have entertained family for years.

Tante Cis was famous for her poems and tributes at family occasions. The sound of her hearty laugh lingers as a most cherished memory. She loved to sing the Dutch songs, and with the slightest encouragement from family, had no hesitance taking centre stage. Even though legally blind, her passion for cards never diminished.

Frances celebrated her 97th birthday just two weeks ago and as usual, accomplished it with style. It is a mark of her strength and endurance to note that she is the first in the Munsters family in 500 years to make it past the age of 90.

Her mainstay was her family, especially her niece Peggy who was devoted to her care. Tante Cis cherished calls and visits from her grandchildren and especially the frequent visits from her only remaining son Peter.

“Cisca, thank you for the wonderful example you set for us. Your gifts of love, laughter, and courage will always be remembered.”

The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria General Hospital 3rd floor, especially Nicole and Paul for their outstanding care.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate this very special lady’s life on Friday, September 3, 2004 at St. Ignatius Church, Stafford and Corydon at 11:00 a.m.. Reception will follow the service at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home at 1291 McGillivray Blvd. 925-1120.

Leonard Alexander Zaparniuk

On June 24, 2004, Len Zaparniuk peacefully passed away at the Concordia Hospital at the age of 71.

Len was a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather who especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren. Len devoted the past couple of years to caring for his ailing wife, Diane and his ill mother, May.

Prior to the death of his wife and mother, Len was an avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening and the occasional horse race. Len was a loving husband who enjoyed doing everything with Diane at his side.

Len’s favorite destination was the Jones Road, a place where he would bond with family and friends - a place where he found relaxation, peace and tranquility. Prior to retirement, Len was an upholsterer who took pride in his work and strived for perfection. Len will be remembered and sadly missed by his children, Len, Rob, and Judy and their respective spouses, Angie, Sue, and Tony, and his grandchildren, Kristin and Jenny. His best friend Eugene Sheremeta and several of Diane’s brothers and sisters will also dearly miss Len.

Cremation and a private service for immediate family will beheld at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cancer Research in honour of Len would be appreciated. Many thanks for the concern and excellent care provided to Len by the nurses and staff at the Concordia Hospital.

Dad, Grandpa, we love you and we will miss you.
