JONES: Mrs. Elizabeth Jane "Bessie" Jones of Brandon passed away after a short illness at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on August 30, 2008 at the age of 92 years. In keeping with Bessie’s wishes, cremation will take place with a private family service to be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Bessie may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6.
JACOBSEN: Jorgen (John) Jacobsen passed away August 3, 2008 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Assiniboine Centre, following a lengthy battle with cancer. John was born on August 16, 1924 in Denmark. He immigrated to Canada in 1955, settling in Winnipeg where he met and married his wife Agnes. They moved to Brandon in 2002 and currently resided at Hobbs Manor. John is survived by his loving wife Agnes, his three step children, Karen (Don Butler) of Brandon, Pat of Vernon, BC, Gordie (Ann) of Mesa, AZ, three grandchildren, Kristi Josephson of Vancouver BC, Michael Josephson of San Francisco, CA and Joby Bond of Toronto, ON and two great grandchildren, Hakan Williams and Julia Bond. Also surviving are sister Asa Ravn and brother Viggo Jacobsen of Denmark and brother in law Cliff Elmwood of Winnipeg. A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, August 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Evert Busink officiating. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Winnipeg at a later date. The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. S. Engelbrecht for his care and concern throughout John’s illness, the compassionate Palliative Care staff and the home care team that took such good care of him before his last hospital stay.
JOHNSTON: Donald James It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Donald James Johnston, on 30 June 2008, at the age of 90 years, following a brief illness. A native of Brandon, Dad was the son of the late George and Edith Johnston. He was raised on a farm north of the city, very close to the now defunct community of Carnegie. He attended the Powerville Elementary School, at the time located in the Rural Municipality of Daly and later, Forrest High School. A gifted mechanic, Dad began his vocation by enrolling in a community technical program. Graduating in 1939 at the top of his class, he was immediately hired by Canadian Motors and worked as an automotive mechanic before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. Prior to being posted overseas in 1942, Dad maintained training aircraft at the Brandon airport, at the time an integral part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He served three years overseas as a member of the renowned 418 Squadron (City of Edmonton), servicing the Dehavilland Mosquito fighter-bomber. The end of hostilities in 1945 saw Dad repatriated back to Canada where, as a civilian, he again found employment at Canadian Motors. Later, an opportunity allowed Dad to accept a position with the Manitoba Telephone System, where he remained until his retirement in 1979. Dad will be lovingly remembered by Jessie, his wife of 59 years, and his children, Diane (Peter) Boychuk, Elliot Lake, Ontario and George (Susan), Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. He is also survived and fondly remembered by his four grandchildren, Sonia (Stuart) McGuire, Stacey (Rob) Hart, Andrew and Brandon Johnston, and his four great-grandchildren, Darren and Jessica McGuire, Tyler and Evan Hart. Dad was predeceased by two brothers, Stewart and George. A time of visitation will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, July 4, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Brandon Cemetery, section 53 (far east side of cemetery) on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m with Rev. Michael Skliros officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
JENSEN: Kurt Lauge Egelund Jensen of Brandon, beloved father of Lisa Vasconcelos (David), Renee Jensen, Laural (David) Cunningham, Lori Jensen, Karla Johnson (Kevin Miller) and Poul Jensen passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the age of 75 years. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, with Brockie Donovan Funeral Celebrant Mr. Lawrence McInnes officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. JACKSON: Carol Faye Jackson (née Bohpa) passed away after a brief illness at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, with family by her side. A Memorial Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. A Traditional Ceremony will be held at the Sioux Valley Veterans’ Hall on Saturday, March 28, 2009 starting at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Pratt Family Cemetery.
JAWORSKI: Anna Jaworski of Brandon, beloved wife of Kaz Jaworski, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the age of 76 years. A funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Deacon John McKenzie of St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church officiating. JONASSON: Mr. Donald Arman Jonasson. It's with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Father and Papa on Friday, December 12, 2008 in Carberry, Manitoba. Don was predeceased by his wife Pat, his Mother and Father and his brothers and sisters.
Born in Vidir, Manitoba on November 18, 1938, Don joined the Armed Forces and travelled throughout Europe. Upon discharge, he returned to Manitoba where he spent the majority of his career in the construction industry. He had a passion for woodworking and enjoyed many hours with Jeff working on various projects. Don also loved to cook for his many friends and family. There were not many days that went by without a couple of extra people at the dinner table.
His son Jeff, daughter in law Tracy and grandchildren Jessica, Paige and Brett will miss his quick wit and the close bond that they shared. He was extremely proud of his family and their accomplishments. Left to mourn his passing is his son Jeff (Tracy), daughter Shelley (John) and grandchildren Jessica, Paige, Brett, Larry, Thomas and Daniel. He will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carberry United Church, 608 Third Avenue, Carberry, Manitoba with Rev. Peggy Reid officiating. JONES: Dr. R. R. "Bill" Jones, beloved husband of Joan Jones, passed away at his residence, Hillcrest Place, on Tuesday, December 02, 2008. Bill was born on May 13, 1923 in Brandon. He served as a Gunner in the Canadian Artillery Corp in Europe from 1943 to 1945. Bill graduated from McGill University in Dentistry in 1951. He practiced Dentistry in Brandon for 37 years. Bill was an active member of the Kinsmen and K-40 as well as the International Federation of Dentists. He was also a member of the Manitoba and Canadian Dental Associations. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed spending time at the cottage at Clear Lake. Bill is survived by his wife Joan of Brandon, married 57 years; sons: David of Calgary, AB, Richard of London, ON and Andrew of Winnipeg, MB. He was predeceased by his father Dr. R.C. Jones and mother, Hazel Jones. A memorial service will be held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood officiating. KIRK: Isabella Harriett (Hutchison) of Fairview Home. It is with deep sympathy that we announce the death of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother on Friday, September 29, 2006. Isabella was born at Sec. 24-11-26, Wallace Municipality, Manitoba on October 27, 1910 to David and Harriett Hutchison. Isabella received her education at Two Creeks and Virden. She married Edgar Kirk in 1930. They farmed at Kirkella, sold their farm and moved to Elkhorn. In 1956, they moved to Brandon. Isabella was a member of the Elkhorn Legion, I.O.D.E. and Daffodil Rebekah Lodge #64. Isabella enjoyed going for car rides and on Seniors for Seniors bus trips. She went to Alaska which she really enjoyed and many more places. Those who knew Isabella will never forget her thoughtfulness and her willingness to help others. She was a very sweet, kind person. You were always welcome in Mom’s home for coffee and sweets, especially her pies. She was a great cook. Mom loved to knit and crochet, making many afghans for everyone in the family. When moving to Brandon, Mom worked at Woolworth’s, Anglo Canadian Oil and Linden Lanes school until retirement. Isabella is survived by her daughter Leah (George) Wakefield; two grand-daughters, Dianne (George) Chase, Ingrid (Jeff) Liere. There are six great-grandchildren: Kirk, Kaitlyn, James, Laura, Samuel and Olivia. Brother-in-law Norman Gatey and many nieces and nephews. Isabella was predeceased by her father David and mother Harriett (Hutchison); husband Edgar on May 25, 1994; brothers Allan (Marg), Bill (Olive), George (Evelyn), Bert (Bobby); sisters Edith (Bob) Mitchel, Janet (Fred) Marten, Elizabeth Gatey and twins. The family extends a sincere and grateful thanks to all the staff at Fairview Home for the excellent care extended to Isabella. The funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, October 6, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood of Central United Church officiating. The organist will be Donna Cooper, soloist, Marlene Yuel and the eulogy will be given by grand-daughter, Ingrid Wakefield. Pallbearers will be: George Yuel, Ed Airey, Dick Graham, Ron Smithson, great-grandsons Kirk Chase and James Hamel. The interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. KNOWLTON: Betty Jean Knowlton, widow of Hugh John Knowlton, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, on August 12, 2006. She is survived by her children: Catherine Gallacher and husband David of Oregon; Bruce Knowlton and wife Margaret of Surrey, B.C. and Joanna Knowlton and husband Jim Tokarchuk of Winnipeg. She is also survived by grandchildren, Brooke Knowlton and David Tokarchuk and her brother R.V.B. (Bill) Burgoyne of Lagoon City, Ontario. She was predeceased by her grandson, Bruce Knowlton in 1994 and husband Hugh in 2000. Betty was born in Edmonton on November 17, 1922 to Edna and James Burgoyne. In 1932, she moved with her family to Winnipeg, where she graduated from Kelvin High School in 1939. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Brandon College in 1942. While at Brandon College, Betty met Hugh and they were married in 1945. They had been married almost 55 years at the time of Hugh’s passing in 2000. After a short time living in Sarnia, Ontario, Betty and Hugh returned to Brandon. In addition to raising her family, Betty became active in the community. Her community service continued throughout her lifetime, including involvement in IODE, volunteer work with the Brandon Music Festival and the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation. The latter included many happy hours working with her friends at the "Nearly New Shop". In 1976, Betty and Hugh moved to Victoria, B.C. where they lived until 1993 when they returned home to Brandon. During their years in B.C., they enjoyed many adventures on their boat "The Wasagaming". They continued to come each year to their cottage at Clear Lake, a place that remained one of the great joys of Betty’s life. Betty was able to spend time there this summer, enjoying her family and her many cherished friends at "the lake". Betty was a devoted, loving and kind daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was also blessed with many dear friends, both lifelong and more recent. Their dedication throughout Betty’s life, and especially in her last days of illness, is a testament to those friendships. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the second floor of the Assiniboine Centre and the fourth floor of Brandon Regional Health Centre for their care and compassion during Betty’s final illness. A private family graveside service will be followed by a memorial service at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy officiating. KING, George Alfred: It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of George King, of Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon, MB, on July 24, 2007, with family by his side. George was born on December 16, 1918 in the Cameron Municipality near Hartney, MB. George received his education in Bidford, Wapaha, and Croll schools. George worked in the gold mine in Sachigo River, ON then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and took his training as an air frame mechanic in Brandon and Ontario. George met Marjorie Bloodworth while in training in Brandon. During WWII, George was in England and Africa and, upon returning home from the war, George and Marjorie were married on September 29, 1945. After their marriage, they went to Ontario where George worked in the iron ore mine in Josephine. After returning from the mine, they settled on the family farm near Croll, MB. George later started a feedlot business near Brandon where he moved his family in 1964. During this time, George also started a new career which lasted 37 years with Texas Refinery Corp. of Canada Limited, winning many awards and enjoying many trips. George was a hard worker, great provider, compassionate, considerate, quick-witted, always willing to help, and also loved to joke with everyone. Some of George’s interests were playing cards, watching sports, and he also really enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles. George was predeceased by his loving wife of 59½ years, Marjorie, his parents, Alfred and Mary King, and sisters, Vera Young and Gladys Taylor. George is survived by his children: son, Alan (Bernice) King, and daughters, Pat (Ray) Seens, Linda (Bob) Warden and Laurie (Ken) Penner. George also leaves to mourn his grandchildren: Rita (Aurel) Vodon, Debbie (Dale) Bochek, Wendy (Neil) Winters, Wonda (Greg) Facey; Tracie, Marcie and Travis Seens (Jenna James); Jacqueline (Rick Reville), Janis, Jocelyn (Ben Parasynchuk) and Cory Warden; Lindy, Karly and Riley Penner; great grandchildren: Trevor, Terrance and Tyler Vodon; Kyle and Ashley Bochek; Jake and Dylan Winters; Brooklyn and Brysen Reville, as well as brothers, Jim (Joyce) King and Charlie (Doreen) King, sisters, Mary McCosh and Marg Flintoff, many nieces, nephews, other extended family and good friends. The service to celebrate George’s wonderful life was held at Central United Church on July 30, 2007 with Pastor Peter Redekopp, of Crystal City, officiating. A Tribute to Grandpa was given by the grandchildren, a Scripture Reading, Psalm 23, was read by Laurie Penner. Pat Seens, Linda Warden and Laurie Penner gave the Eulogy. Bernice King sang "How Great Thou Art" accompanied on the piano by Pat Seens. Pallbearers were grandsons, Travis Seens, Cory Warden and Riley Penner, niece, Kathie King and nephews, Fred King and Raymond Young and son, Alan King, great grandson, Trevor Vodon and all in attendance were considered Honorary Pallbearers. Following the service, interment took place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens where George was laid to rest. KLASSEN: Henry John Klassen, formerly of Griswold, beloved husband of Helen, passed away at his residence, Rideau Park Personal Care Home, on Wednesday, June 13, 2007. Henry was born March 25, 1909 in Ufa, Russia. As a teenager, he immigrated to Canada with his family and started farming in the Griswold area in 1929. Henry continued farming until 1990 when he moved to Brandon. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 63 years, daughter Charlotte and Ken (Ezoki) of Fernie, BC, son, Art and Janet (Sutter) of Regina, SK, daughter, Irene and Terry (Moore) of Ashton, ON, son, Ed and Heather (Curle) of Griswold, MB; grandchildren: Brett and Leanne Ede, Amy and Brad (Slingsby), Michael and Brittany (Hunter), Graham, Chris and Jeff and great grandchildren, Benjamin and Jackson. Henry was predeceased by his father, Johan and mother, Maria, brother, Frank and sisters, Selma and Annie. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff at Rideau Park for Dad’s excellent care. Funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave Ens officiating. Interment will follow in the Griswold Cemetery.
