FRIESEN: John R. of Killarney, formerly of Brandon, born September 12, 1932, beloved husband of Mavis. It is with great sadness and sorrow we announce the passing of a great husband, father and grandfather, on January 25, 2001. John fought a fierce but short battle with cancer. John, was predeceased by his father Jacob and his mother Maria. Also, his half-brothers Jake and Peter and his sister Anne. He will be survived and sadly missed by his friend and wife of 41 years Mavis (Leaver); sons David (Margie), Sara and Niki, Brandon; Bruce (Kathy), Kristin and Danielle, Morden; daughter Diane and Joel, Abbotsford, British Columbia. Also surviving are: his brothers, Pete of Carman; Bill of Steinbach; Hank of Morden and Charlie of Portage; his sisters: Mary, Betty, Helen, Nettie of Winkler and Sue of Winnipeg. He was born in Mexico and raised close to Winkler in the village of Rienfeld. He helped out on the family farm, from an early age, until he moved to Carman. He worked as a certified 4th Class Power Engineer. He was employed and supervised in many different workplaces in Manitoba. He supervised processing plants at Pembina Poultry in Morden and Boissevain. As well, he worked at Macey Foods, Burns, Pool Packers, Simplot and finally St. Michael’s Academy in Brandon, where he retired in 1997. Dad spent most of his life living in Brandon and officially retired to Killarney in 1997. Dad had many great loves, firstly was his family, spending many visits to the west coast to visit Diane, dropping in to Morden to assist Bruce with a home project, dropping in to have coffee with Dave and most important of all, spending the day with Mom. Dad always made a special effort to visit during family occasions and special events of the grandchildren. Great memories were created vacationing, camping, watching his kids in all kinds of sporting events and just being in his presence. His special alternative love‚ was the game of golf. Since his retirement, he was able to play golf, the way it was meant, whenever he felt like it. Playing golf to a handicap of 8 to 10, the last couple of years, it was his opportunity to get out and enjoy the fresh air, green grass and companionship of fellow golfers. He was a member of the Killarney Lakeside Golf Course and played in the Senior League. The Senior League allowed him to enjoy playing on several of the different golf courses in southern Manitoba. This fall, he and mom joined the 5 pin bowling league in Killarney. When living in Brandon, he 10 pin bowled two nights a week and he always got a kick seeing his name in the weekly newspaper, for a good performance. He was a man of many talents when it came to fixing things. Around the house, he knew his way around carpentry, plumbing, electrical and could fix almost any household appliance. You just had to give him time, because he was never in a rush. This is most evident when you see how he and mom transformed their current house from the “Carpenters Special”‚ to the updated home it is today. He enjoyed the simplest of life, never in a hurry, always waving to whoever he knew, having coffee with the guys, staying abreast of current affairs, puttering in the garage and spending quality time watching television. Dad started life with humble beginnings, he worked hard, he shared his knowledge, gave his love to the family, allowed us to make mistakes, was there for support, was a great provider, quietly taught and was a great mentor, for all that knew him. He spent 68 glorious years on this earth. He was taken from us far too early, please Lord take care of him, until we can meet again. Rest In Peace.
CHARLES:
It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Monica “Joan” Charles (nee White) aged 79, on Friday, January 19, 2001 at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Joan is survived by her daughter, Karen and son-in-law Lloyd Paulson of Wawanesa; two grandchildren Kris and Angie Paulson of Wawanesa; four brothers Arthur and Dell White of Ottawa, Bernie and Gladys White of Binscarth, Les and Dorothy White and Gordon and Gail White of Brandon; two sisters Imogen Pizzey of Foxwarren and Phyllis Shaw of Brandon; sister-in-law Ivy Charles of Carman and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her husband Don, her parents, George and Agnes White, her sister Muriel Scarrow and her brothers-in-law Murray Pizzey and Roy Shaw. Joan was born January 12, 1922 in Binscarth where she completed her early education. During her school years she was active in the church, helped her mother with her many younger brothers and sisters and helped her Dad at the filling station. She began teaching on permit at a small country school near Inglis in 1942-1943 and decided that teaching was a career that she would love. She attended Normal School in Winnipeg in 1943 - 1944. She taught one year at Alpine School in 1944-1945 and then Oakville from 1945-1948. During her time in Oakville she met her future husband, Don Charles. Don and Joan were married on December 27, 1947 in Binscarth. They began their married life in Rathwell and made that community their life long home. They had one daughter, Karen. Joan returned to the career that she loved, in 1953, and continued to teach in Rathwell School until her retirement in 1985. She remembered and loved all of her students very much. She spent many hours perfecting her teaching skills. She was one of the first teachers to make use of computers in an elementary classroom. Her classroom was a model for other teachers and she was often called upon to do in-service presentations. Joan was very much a family person. She loved her grandchildren so much and was so very proud of them. They have many fond memories of doing crafts, baking and sewing with Gramma. She had infinite patience for small children. We often thought she was like a living activity centre. Joan was always willing to learn and try new things. She decided last year that she would like to learn about the Internet that Kris and Angie talked about so much. She got a computer and an Interment account. She was really enjoying emailing her family and friends. Kris and Angie always got a chuckle out of Gramma's computer questions. Joan and Don had many happy years together. They loved to travel, spending many winters in Victoria and always remembered their trips to Bermuda, Hawaii, and the British Isles. Many happy times were shared at their cabin and Clear Lake. After Don's death, Joan enjoyed the company of her friends at Rathwell. The ladies were always busy doing things together and that meant a great deal to her. She was active in the church, UCW and the Legion. She was very proud this year when Angie won the District Legion Scholarship. Joan approached her battle with cancer with a positive attitude. She always had a happy smile on her face and was willing to try anything. We will all remember hearing her saying “Thanks so much”. She was so appreciative of all the help she received over the last two years. The family would like to thank the staff of the Treherne Hospital, Ward 5B of the St. Boniface Hospital and the Chemotherapy Department at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Thank-you as well to Dr. Nawrocka of Treherne and Dr. R. Wong of the St. Boniface Cancer Clinic. A very special thank you goes to Dr. Rochelle Van De Velde at St. Boniface Hospital. Her special kindness made a difficult time much easier for us and we will always appreciate all she did for Mum and for us. Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Haupt from the Rathwell Memorial Hall on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers were nieces and nephews: Calvin Pizzey, Linda Mooney, Maxine Plesiuk, Ken White, Barb White and Marie Smith. All family and friends in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers. Interment followed in the Woodlands Cemetery. HARRISON: It is with sorrow the family announces the sudden passing of Ronald Scott Harrison on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Ronald was born in Carman, Manitoba on September 29, 1919. He resided at Graysville, Manitoba where he received his education. In March, 1941 Ronald enlisted in the Canadian Army. He was assigned to the Corps of Military Staff Clerks, Department of National Defense, Ottawa. He attained the rank of staff Sergeant and received his discharge October 9, 1946. Ronald is survived by his brother, Harvey (Joan) of Fort MacLeod, Alberta and sisters, Eileen Johnson of Winnipeg, Iola Flanagan (Claude) of Brandon and Wilma Gray (Hector) of Carman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Ronald was predeceased by his parents, Sarah and William Harrison, his brothers Roy and Francis and brothers-in-law, Clarence Landles and Harold Johnson. A memorial service was held at Rideau Park on Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with Barb Douglas officiating. Interment will take place at Graysville Cemetery at a later date. William (Bill) G. Dunn died at the Deloraine Memorial Hospital on February 1, 2001 age 77. Memorial service will be held on Monday, February 5, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. in the Deloraine United Church, Deloraine, Manitoba. Interment at a later date in Del-Win Cemetery. BONCHUK:
Matthew Bonchuk of Birtle, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2001 at the Birtle Health Centre at the age of 82 years. Matthew is survived by three brothers: Mike and wife Stella of Birtle, Nick and wife Gladys of Birtle, and Peter and wife Jean of Birtle; two sisters: Anne and husband John Yaskiw of Shoal Lake and Nellie Maydaniuk of Kamloops, British Columbia. The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 5, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rossburn. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Prayers will be said Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. from the church. Rt. Rev. Canon John Lehky and Rev. Michael Tkachuk will officiate. John A. Berry, beloved husband of the late Hazel Berry, of Reston, Manitoba, passed away at Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, February 1, 2001 in his 80th year of age. CROSS:
With deep sadness the family of Marion Cross announces her passing at Fairview Home on January 31, 2001, in her 97th year. She was born Marion Catherine MacIntosh at Dalkeith, Ontario on July 8, 1904 to Catherine and Norman MacIntosh, whose Scottish grandparents had settled in Glengarry County in the early 1800’s. Her husband to be, Jonathon Cross was born at Caledonia Springs, Ontario, November 11, 1889. Marion and Jack were married March 5, 1928 in Ottawa. They moved to Woodrow, Saskatchewan, where Jack had lived since 1910. They then moved to Griswold in 1937. Marion was a tireless worker for the United Church for fifty years. She was active in the Eastern Star, was a past Matron and a life member of Concord Chapter #39. She received her fifty year pin on December 11, 1997. Marion was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem in Brandon and the Crocus Club in Griswold. Her family and friends will lovingly remember her for her strength of character and her devotion to family and community. Marion loved to play her piano and to quote poetry, even into her 90’s. Surviving are two daughters: Jean Farley (Earle) of Douglas, Winn Campbell (Bill) of Calgary and five sons: Stanley (Iris), Archie (Kay), Joe (Lorna), John (Dorothy) all of Griswold and Evans (Candace) of Brandon. Also surviving are her fourteen grandchildren: Cindy Locke (Bruce), Souris; Barbara Bell (Tim), Calgary; Kenneth Cross (Sandra), Brandon; Dawna Sawka (Geoff), Calgary; Beverly Cross, Winnipeg; Dwayne Cross (Christine), Virden; Donald Campbell (Sandra Lee), Laguna Beach, California; Sandra Cross, Brandon; Marion Cross, Kuwait; Dianne Wooldridge (Robb), Virden; Christine Vik (Erik), Calgary; Ryan Cross, Brandon; Jody Cross, Calgary; Darlene Cross, Brandon. There are fourteen great grandchildren: Cori and Brett Locke; Meagan and Myles Bell; Braden, Teagan and Derek Cross; Landon and Brittany Cross; Alexa and MacKenzie Wooldridge; Haley Campbell, Logan and Alexandra Sawka. Also surviving are: sister-in-law Janice MacIntosh of Dalkeith, Ontario, nieces and nephews and many cousins in Ontario and the West. Marion was predeceased by her husband Jonathon Cross in 1966, her grandchild, Catherine Campbell in 1961 and her brother John MacIntosh in 1987. The ceremony to celebrate Marion's life will be held at the Griswold Untied Church, Griswold on Monday, February 5, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Pam Dean will officiate. GIBBS:
Kenneth Lyle, LT/CDR (retired) fondly known as “Gibbo” passed away on March 25, 2001 in Victoria, British Columbia, after a long illness with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). born in Winnipeg in 1924 he spent his early childhood in Cranbrook, British Columbia and Brandon, Manitoba. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1943, trained as a pilot and transferred to the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, serving overseas in naval air squadrons. On return to Canada he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in Shearwater, Stadacona, Magnificent, Quebec, Niagara, Bonaventure, Bytown and other ships and shore establishments. He also served two exchange postings with the US Navy in Pensacola and Key West, Florida, and in the aircraft carriers USS Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Leyte, Valley Forge, and Antietam. While on duty with Canadian Joint Staff in Washington, D. C., he met and married his wife Jacquelyn. In 1959 he commanded HS-50 Helicopter Aquadron operating from HMCS Bonaventure for two years. After that he instructed at the Maritime Warfare School in Halifax, followed by duty on the staff of the Flag Officer Atlantic Coast as Project Officer coordinating the fitment and trials of helicopters carried by destroyers. On retirement from the Navy in 1968 he worked as a computer programmer until 1974 when he accepted employment with Beautiful British Columbia Magazine, retiring as a Publisher in 1988. Upon retiring from the magazine he worked tirelessly for research into the cause of ALS and awareness of the disease. Ken is predeceased by his father, Alexander, mother Roberta (Butcher) and is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn, daughter Karen (Daryl), grandsons Benjamin and Fisher, granddaughter Emmy, son Donald, and brother Len (Betty) as well as many special friends from the Navy, Beautiful British Columbia Magazine and the International Regional Magazine Association. He was a member of the Naval Officer's Association, Rotary Club, Royal Canadian Legion, and several Aviation Museums. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in the Cadboro Bay United Church, 2625 Arbutus Road. A reception will follow at the New Naden Wardroom on Esquimalt Road. At his request cremation with cremated remains scattered at sea. ESPLEN:
The death of Ronald Adam Esplen, of Forrest, beloved husband of Donna, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, March 30, 2001. Ron was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Claude and Jean Esplen on July 8, 1930. Ron attended school in Regina and Kipling, Saskatchewan. Ron had several different careers over the years, taxi driver, bartender, farmer, bus building to his most recent job as delivery driver for Palmer Enterprises (Rick and Sue Palmer of Brandon). He enjoyed working in the yard, taking care of his lawn and flower beds. Ron loved to visit and play with his grandson, Bailey (age 2 years). He loved to visit and have coffee with numerous friends. Ron is survived by his wife, Donna Lynn; stepson, Jim Powne; stepdaughter, Krista (Scott) Dreger and grandson, Bailey; son Scott (Sandy) Kehler, grandchildren, Chloe, Lexine and Dylan; son Howard (Noel) Kehler, grandson, Jakson and brothers, Brian (Laura) of Hawaii and their children, Brian Jr., Cathy and Donna; Barry (Shirley) of Moab, Utah and their children Terry and Carlyn. Ron was predeceased by his father, Claude in 1959 and his mother, Jean in 1966, as well as nephew Dale Winter in 1988. The ceremony to celebrate Ron's life was held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. Urnbearer was Jack Espy. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery.
