Gerhardt Juskowiak "Opa"
Gerhardt passed away the morning of Monday, January 19th, 2009 with family by his side at Fairview Home in Brandon. He was born to Ernest Schultz and Maria Juskowiak on January 20th, 1917 in Magdeburg Germany. Gerhardt’s mother Marie passed away just 3 days after his birth while his father Ernest was away at war. Gerhardt was raised by his grandmother Schultz in Tangemunde Germany.
Gerhardt served in the German army from 1936 – 39 then again for six years during World War II. After the war he worked on an experimental farm where he met his bride-to-be Wanda Sader.
It was the wish of Grandmother Schultz that he should come to Canada to look after her son Otto Schultz. So in January of 1952 Gerhardt left Uelsen Germany and traveled to Glenella Manitoba where he took over the operation of the farm from his uncle Otto.
Wanda moved to Canada on October 23rd, 1952 and she and Gerhardt were married soon after on the 31st of October at Christ Lutheran Church in Waldersee.
In 1953 they purchased an additional quarter section of land and a few milk cows. Winters were cold and the hours were long and hard. Gerhardt also sought out work in the community to earn extra income for their growing family.
Due to Wanda’s long battle with cancer they moved from the farm to Glenella in 1977. He then worked a few years at a Canadian Tire in Winnipeg.
Gerhardt always had a love for animals, thus even in his retirement he kept a few chickens and there were always cats or dogs around.
Gerhardt’s last few years were spent at Fairview Home in Brandon. Just as all through his life he was a fighter, whether fighting in a war or for the welfare of his family or against the Alzheimer’s that was creeping in on him he kept the nurses and staff on their toes. Nothing was ever so bad that a piece of chocolate wouldn’t smooth things over. He loved his chocolate. Special thanks go to the nurses and staff at the home for all your love and care of Opa through the years.
He was predeceased by his parents Marie Juskowiak and Ernest Schultz, beloved wife of 46 years Wanda (Sader) and daughter – in – law Rosanne Corbel
Gerhardt – Opa to everyone will be greatly missed by his family; his son Fred (Sylvia) and grandchildren Garhardt (Tina), Joey (Amanda) and Tamala; son George (Lynn) and grandchildren Jackie (Peter), Eddie (Tanis), Ricky, Sandy (Molly), Pamela and Samantha, and his numerous great grandchildren.

It was with great sadness when we had to say goodbye to our dear mother who passed away peacefully on April 15th, 2014 at the Swan Valley Health Center.
She will be remembered with much love and sadness by her daughters Doris (Joe) Burke; son Nelson (Cindy) Chess and daughter Shirley Chess (Ron Friesen); grandchildren Amy Potten and Greg Ilienko, Justin Potten, Nathan Chess and Deanna Martin, Kalynn Allan and Bryce Merritt, Mikaile Friesen and Chase MacDonald and Kaiden Friesen; great grandchildren Presley Potten, Britton Ilienko, Skyelar Ilienko and Lakelyn Ilienko; siblings Alexandria (Walter) Stesanko and Olga Golding; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins who will remember her dearly.

After her schooling, she worked on the family farm. In 1956 she met the love of her life, Emery James Chess and they married on November 15th, 1956.
They settled on Dad's farm in Saskatchewan. He worked on the fields while mom was the home maker tending to the gardens which she loved so much. She had the best gardens and was so proud of the things she grew. She would give away so much of the gardens bounty to family and friends that could use it.
Mom also attended to the animals on the farm. She loved taking care of them for many years. She always had her dog by her side, watching over her in the barn yard. Anywhere she would go, either her dog, or a few cats would follow.
Later on in life dad built her a greenhouse, which she was so proud of. We always knew where to find her in the early spring, in the greenhouse with the radio going and either planting or watering sometimes. Her greenhouse was her hobby that brought her much joy. She grew many plants over the years and made their yard a paradise. The flowers were everywhere. She also enjoyed her berry patch with strawberries and raspberries that she would pick and make into delicious desserts and preserves.
Mom and dad worked as a team on the family farm until his sudden passing on April 3rd, 2003. In the spring of 2004, mom moved into Swan River at the Midtown Estates. She loved her new place and just about everyday she’d be a regular coffee drinker at the co-op cafeteria.
Even after moving into town, she couldn’t forget her hobby. Her deck was always filled to the max with plants. In the evening you would always find her in the common room playing games with all her friends. She enjoyed this up until she was admitted into the Swan Valley Health Centre.
Evening service was held on Monday, April 21st, 2014 from the Chapel of Paull Funeral Home, Swan River, Manitoba.
