JOHN LEMAISTRE

JOHN BRAYNE LEMAISTRE John was born in Winnipeg on Thursday, January 2, 1920, the youngest to Frederick Francis and Edith Harriett LeMaistre. He had three siblings, Arthur and Gertrude and is survived by Edward (Ted). He attended Fort Rouge, Earl Grey, and Kelvin High Schools. From January 1942 to December 1966, John was enlisted in the Canadian Naval Service that took him to the training at University of Toronto, Cornwallis, and Halifax. He served on Corvettes and Fairmile ships escorting convoys in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and in the Atlantic, having his own command at the age of 24. In 1968, John retired from the Naval Reserve at H.M.C.S. Chippewa, Winnipeg, as Commander. He was involved with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, and was President and Honorary Life Member of the Navy League of Canada. His lifetime work included working in the banking business, which took him to the Lake of the Woods/Kenora. He then went into the commercial real estate management business and gave occasional lectures about the business. John was involved with the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), becoming Regional Vice-President and Certified Property Manager, and involved with the Canadian Property Management (CPM) and finished off his career with A.E. Le Page. During this period, he became active with the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and became a senior bureau member. He was also active with the Downtown Business Association which worked to revitalize the core area. He retired in 1985. John's biggest enjoyment was his almost 53-year marriage with Suzanne, (who predeceased him in December 1997), and his family and friends. He leaves to mourn his seven children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Arthur (Madalene), Janice (Sean), Brad (Erin), and Linda; Jim (Maureen); Dave (Liz), Jeff (Brandy), Chris (Dawn), and Michael (Kristina); Anne (Tim); Mark (Karen), Jill, Scott; Mary (Siert), Stephen, Marissa; Susan, Jackie, Carmelle; along with several great-grandchildren, and his life-long friend, Margaret (Peg) Tapley and enduring friends, Karl and Evalyn Triffo, and his close, steadfast friend in Charles (Chuck) Fry and his wife, Joyce. John was fond of animals and nature; he enjoyed camping, golfing, and curling. In 1998, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, then received a pacemaker. Early in 2003, John was diagnosed with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and CLL Leukemia. These diseases took their toll on his mind, body and soul - and finally on his emotional and medical health. He died peacefully after a long struggle with his illness on Monday, January 26. A very special Thank You to Dr. Sheldon Permack, Amber, all the Staff at The Waverley, The Rosewood, and the Kildonan Personal Care Centre (3rd floor). Cremation has taken place and, as per John's wishes, his ashes will be spread at sea, in full navy fashion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or the Cancer Society, in memory of John. FRANK J. SAGAN 1919 - 2004 Peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Concordia Hospital, we announce the passing of Frank Sagan with his family at his side. He leaves to mourn his wife Irene of 59 years, one daughter Christine, two sisters Margaret Kasian and Helen Choate and numerous family and friends. He was predeceased by his only son-in-law Lorne, parents John and Valerie Sagan, a daughter in infancy and a sister Mary Wnuk. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, September 1 at 8:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer R.C. Church, 264 Donwood Dr. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, September 2 at 11:00 a.m. also at the church. GRACE SCHWEEN (nee LYONS) Peacefully at home on Sunday, August 29, 2004, our Mom and Amma went to sleep with the angels, and a very special angel, Gaye. Mom and Amma will be sadly be missed by her children, David (Judy), Connie (Derek), and son-in-law Roy; her grandchildren, Leslie, David, Clayton and Shae; great-granddaughter Erin; sister Emily; nieces and nephews; and two very special Little Doggies, Jax and Corona. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. Her family will celebrate Grace's life and memories in private. Flowers are gratefully declined. FRIEDA SHARPE (nee JONATSCHICK) On Sunday, August 29, 2004, Frieda Sharpe, aged 81 years, passed away at the River East Personal Care Home. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Marilyn; son-in-law David Scott; grandchildren, Rob and Katherina; sister Eva Loewen; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Fred Sharpe (Schlamp); parents, Clementine and John Jonatschick; brothers, Jack, John and Norman; sisters, Blanche, Helene Turczak, Ella Laudinsky, Betty Polczer and Lily Cox; and good friend and companion Noble Downey. Mom was born on March 3, 1923 and was raised in the Elmwood area. She was baptized, confirmed and attended school at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. At the early age of 13, Mom became a maid to help support her family. During the Second World War, she worked at the CPR station, at which time she also put herself through hairdressing school. She operated a number of salons including Sharpe's Beauty Salon and later built and owned Artistic Beauty Salon. Mom was a member of a number of clubs including the McCalman Seniors' Club, West End Seniors' Centre and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Eagles until rheumatoid arthritis prevented her from attending. She certainly enjoyed playing cards with her sisters, bowling, singing and bus trips to the States. But what we'll all remember most was Mom's love for dancing, even as she got older and could barely walk! In recent years Mom resided at River East Personal Care Home where the staff was wonderful at making her final years comfortable. These great people encouraged Mom to continue to indulge in one of her greatest passions: ice cream! Mom often said that no one should cry for her because she has waited long enough. Well, Mom, your wait is over. May God bless you. JOYCE MARION SMITH (nee HAWLEY) On August 29, 2004 Joyce Smith passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband Robert Webster in 1978. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Ted) Kiesman and Shelagh (Gregg) Kovacs; grandchildren, Shannon (Michael) Martin, Carmen Kiesman (Rob Buchanan), Matthew (Jennifer) Kiesman, Heather Kovacs (Luka Jambrosic) and Jill Kovacs; great-grandson Benjamin Kiesman. Joyce was born October 6, 1920 and grew up in Riverview. She was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. Joyce was actively involved in Harstone United Church teaching Sunday School, Explorers and C.G.I.T. and singing in the choir. Later in life she attended Knox United Church. Joyce cherished her friends in the Ingersoll Street Koffee Klatch and enjoyed working part-time at The Bay. After retirement, she volunteered for many years in the medical library at Deer Lodge Centre. Joyce will best be remembered as a devoted and fun-loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin. Special thanks to the staff at West Park Manor for their loving care. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined.
