HAROLD POIRIER
January 30, 2004
HAROLD (HARRY) ROY LOUIS (TRAPPER) POIRIER Harry passed away peacefully in St. Paul's Personal Care Home, The Pas, Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the age of 79 years. He was much loved, and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Harry was born Thursday, December 18, 1924 at The Pas, MB. Harry, known to many as Trapper, came to Wabowden in the 1950's while working for the Canadian National Railway. He was returning to The Pas when his job was finished, but when Mabel showed up at the train station, and as he told it, "he had to stay and marry her." Trapper was united in marriage to Mabel May Mallet, January 3, 1956 at St. Theodore's Church in Wabowden. Wabowden was home for the rest of his life; even at St. Paul's he asked about Dwyers and the girls at the store. They shared seven children, Madeline Poirier (Bruno Fiddler), Arnold Poirier (Isabelle Thompson), Harold Jr. "Don Don", (deceased at age two), Pauline Paupanekis (Reg), Joe Poirier (Kendi Clearwater), Janet Poirier (Andy Hendrix), Leona (Randy) Schwanke. They also raised Merrill Poirier, their first grandchild. Trapper was a strong man, kind, and gentle. It was always Halloween at Trapper's House as he insisted on always having candy to give out to the kids. His many grandchildren were an important joyous part of his life. Trapper was a pioneer, working in the bush, on the CNR, with Churchill Forest Industries, and Manitoba Hydro. He could fix anything and amazed people with his talents building a motorized three-wheel bike for Janet, building a generator out of a washing machine, and carving a prop out of a piece of poplar when trouble struck in the bush. All remember Trapper for his sense of humour; he had a cheery word and quick wit, and many stories about humourous encounters in his lifetime. Trapper worked hard all his life; he was a good husband to his "Sweetiepie", and a beloved father and grandfather. He is the last member of his immediate family of ten. Trapper has gone to join Mabel, his wife, and his family who have gone before him, and to be with his Maker and Saviour. Trapper is survived by Madeline (Bruno) and her children; Merrill, his children, Delaine, Merrill Jr., Centuria, Robert (Crystal) and his daughter, Amber; Laura and her children, Hayley, Rayna, and David Cole; Arnold Poirier (Isabelle Thompson), Pauline (Reg) Paupanekis, their children, Ryan, Tamara, Erin; Joe Poirier (Kendi Clearwater), his children, Jackie Becker, Wayne Fourre and Alana Ferland; Janet Poirier (Andy Hendrix); Leona (Randy Schwanke) and their children, Christopher, Jared, Destiny. Trapper was predeceased by his wife, Mabel; and son, "Don Don". A Christian Wake Service was held Friday, January 2, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at Hemauer Funeral Home led by James Hemauer. A Service of Remembrance was held Monday, January 5, 2:00 p.m. at the Ke Na Now Centre, Wabowden, MB with Fr. Martin Bradbury presiding. The Pallbearers were Christopher Poirier, Robert Poirier, Ryan Paupanekis, Merrill Poirier, Wayne Fourre. The Honorary Pallbearers were Charlie McLeod, Henry Garrick, Charlie Mallett, Dennis Dwyers, Donald McIvor, Jr., Solomon McLeod, Alex Bayer, Bruno Fiddler, Reg Paupanekis, Randy Schwanke, Lee Munroe, Joe Colomb, and all his friends who knew and loved him. The family wish to thank you for your kindness and attendance, and for all donations and well wishes, also to St. Paul's, Nurses and Staff, and the Wabowden Health Staff and Homecare Workers, for their loving care of our Dad. Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, in care of arrangements.
