WIESLAWA SZCZERSKI

August 14, 2004

WIESLAWA ZOFIA (SOPHIE) SZCZERSKI Finally free of her limitations and frailties of age, our Mama, Babci and friend peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2004. Sophie was predeceased by her parents and husband (1996). She is survived by her three children and six grandchildren: daughter Benna (Sandy) Thornton-Trump; sons, Ed (Doreen) and Tom (Yvonne) Szczerski. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren, Ian (Marcella) Thornton-Trump, Ellowyn (Jason) Nadeau, Carl, David, Michael and Andrea Szczerski. Born on January 2, 1923 in Janow Lubelski, Poland, Sophie was the only child of Maria Lodzia-Michalska and Kazimierz Dybczynski. She was educated at home until at the age of 14, when she left home to attend the Urseline Convent in Lublin, Poland. During her time in school and living in an occupied Poland, she developed fortitude of spirit that would become a defining characteristic throughout her life. Sophie met Mihal Edward Szczerski during the war and they were married in 1942. Circumstances of war caused numerous separations until 1949 when Sophie and her daughter arrived in Canada via Halifax at the now famous Pier 51. Making her way in February to Winnipeg, the newly reunited family finally settled in the Fort Rouge area and bought a house on Nassau Street, which was home for many years. Sophie and Edward had two sons to add to their family: Edward and Tomasz. Sophie worked for many years at Quinton's Cleaners before she left for a career at Manitoba Telephone System. She worked in the Directory and Traffic Departments, retiring in 1987. Her joy was to walk with her dog, Brandy and explore the neighborhoods she lived in. In her recent move to Catherine Place, she felt the sharp loss of having to give up her little four-legged friend, whom she missed deeply every day. Before her loss of vision she greatly enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, knitting, sewing, reading and before it was deemed unhealthy, sun tanning! Her loss of vision in recent years restricted her activities, yet it did not diminish her spirit or interest in the world. She had a sharp mind and loved to engage her visitors in stories from the past and news in the present. She had an opinion on everything and was not shy to share it with others! The family wishes to thank Dr. R Hayward for his long continued care and express our appreciation for the compassion of Dr. Mowat and the staff of the Emergency Unit of the St. Boniface Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be said at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. on Wednesday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Missionaries of Charity, 167 Aikins St. or the Heart and Stroke Fund. May Dad and Mama be reunited and rest in peace. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 McGillivray Blvd -1-877-230-0438

RONALD WATSON

August 14, 2004

DR. RONALD K. WATSON, M.D. (F.R.C.P.) Peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2004, at his West Hawk cottage, surrounded by the love of his family. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn; and children, Don (Tracy Love), Debbie (Rick Martin), Rick (Claudia Watson), Linda (Cam McFadyen) and Ron Jr.; grandchildren, Kira and Hunter Watson, Jason and Liana Martin, Ashleigh Watson and Terri Newman, Karlyn and Devyn McFadyen; sister Sheila (Bill Milner); mother-in-law Mary Burrows; sister-in-law Norrie Ricthie. Predeceased by his parents, Alice and Herbert Watson, and Wilf and Don Burrows. Ronald K. was born and raised in Winnipeg, graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1953. He began his medical career in Flin Flon, MB, where he met and married Marilyn. After two years, they moved to St. Louis, MO to specialize in Otorhinolaryngology under Dr. Ogura and Dr. Walsh at the Washington University School of Medicine. After four years of training Ron moved back to Winnipeg with his wife and three children. Ron joined the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at the Winnipeg Clinic in 1960, where he continued to work, up until this past spring. Ron had privileges at the General and Misericordia Hospitals and was Head of the E.N.T. Department for a number of years at Misericordia. Ron taught many new doctors his chosen specialty, attracting a number of them from afar, to learn from him. Ron and family returned to Flin Flon each July, for many years, where he saw patients each morning, and joined the family vacation for the rest of the day at Beaver Lake. For many years, Ron went to Norway House, to see patients in the northern community as part of the Northern Medical Unit. He also spoke to a larger audience as medical expert on a local radio station. Others will know these aspects of his life better than us because to us he was Dad. With five children Dad was very active at the River Heights Community Club. As a family, we spent Friday evenings at family skating. Dad was a regular spectator at hockey games, speed skating and other activities. Dad served two terms as President of the R.H.C.C. Later in life, with children grown and many grandchildren, Dad enjoyed semi-retirement, travelling and puttering. Most weekends he would go to the cottage at Whytewold, and summer was spent where he passed, at West Hawk Lake. He spent hours walking around the property, poking the rocks with a knife, looking for a small hole so he could plant a small tree. Now, most trees on the property are ones he planted, and most are very big, with good strong roots, because Dad helped them get a good start when they were young. The stable influence in our lives is gone, but the uncertainty brought by Dad's passing is only temporary because he gave us all a good start when we were young. Donations to Cancer Care Manitoba, or the Winnipeg Humane Society, in lieu of flowers. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Church, Oak Street at Kingsway Avenue.
