DR. ROBERT AUREL JACQUES January 3, 1914 - July 15, 2004 He was a lifelong learner; he healed; he sang; he loved and was loved. Dr. Robert Jacques (Bob) was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba in 1914. Bob took great pride in his Franco-Manitoban heritage and at age 78 received a degree in French Language studies from the University of Victoria. Thanks to the support and mentorship of the Late Dr. L.D. Collins, Dr. Jacques completed his medical studies at the University of Manitoba. In return, he routinely assisted and encouraged young doctors. After practicing in Flin Flon and St. Boniface, in 1950 Dr. Jacques and Dr. J.M. Huot co-founder the St. Boniface Clinic, today a major multi-lingual health care participant in Winnipeg/St. Boniface. Dr. Jacques was a dedicated healer. He practiced at the St. Boniface Hospital and was valued and trusted by the Grey Nuns for whom he had great respect. Besides daily house calls, Dr. Jacques travelled to small towns in southwestern Manitoba to assist local physicians. In later years, he established a small practice in Oakbank, Manitoba. After his retirement, Dr. Jacques used his medical knowledge and supportive manner in visiting and comforting the aged and those in ill health. In these visits, he was accompanied by his wife, Mae, always a smiling "spark" in any sick person's day. Because of tragedy in his early years (the untimely early deaths of his mother and a brother), Dr. Jacques placed a special value on family life. He encouraged his children to pursue excellence. The Jacques household was always open to those who for some reason or another needed a temporary base from which to operate. These included new Canadians, young students from rural areas and even "adopted" friends of their children. Dr. Jacques lived his adult life with Parkinson's disease. He accepted growing disability with patience and grace. Dr. Jacques is lovingly cherished by his wife of 63 years, Mae Davidson Jacques; and their children, Sharon (Richard) Driscoll of London, Ontario, Betty (Frank) Prosser of Parksville, B.C. and Robert (Pamela Waygood), of Nahanni Butte, NT and France; three grandchildren, Mike (Anita), Marsha (Greg), and Steve; and four great-grandchildren, Sydney, Erin, Arman, and Ronan. Dr. Jacques will be missed by his brother, Leo of Winnipeg. His brother Louis and his sisters, Cecile Vallee and Florence Zunic predeceased him. Thanks for all those friends who maintained contact with Bob over the years and especially, Roger Vadeboncoeur, who added such joy to his final years. Deepest appreciation is extended to those individuals at Beckley Farm Lodge in Victoria, who touched Bob in his final years and had the good fortune to be touched by him in return. Thanks for providing not only outstanding care but the opportunity for Bob to die peacefully "at home" with his family there. Dr. Jacques' family will attend the 10:00 a.m. o'clock mass and celebrate his life at the reception following at St. Jean Baptiste Paroise Francaise, 302 Richmond Street in Victoria on Sunday, July 18, 2004. THOMAS GEORGE LAST September 15, 1929 - July 16, 2004 Our loving Father, Husband, and friend passed away peacefully at Concordia Hospital on the morning of July 16, 2004. With his family at his side every step of the way Dad fought valiantly and uncomplaining against a lengthy illness which finally overcame him physically but was no challenge to his brilliant mind and strong spirit. In that sense he will be with us forever. Predeceased by his mother Hazel and father Sam, Dad is survived by his devoted wife of fifty two years, Gloria (nee Scinocca) and daughters Aurelia Last and partner Shirley, and Glory Dawn Last and husband Doug. He also leaves to mourn his sister Jerry McMeekin and brother in law Roy McMeekin with whom he spoke to almost every night on the phone just to give each other the gears; brother in law and sister in law Shirley and Ron Scinocca from San Diego; childhood friends Brian Flye and wife Jody Flye, friends since second grade. Dad also leaves many other friends, family, nieces and nephews who each held a special place in his soft heart including Granddogs Fysal and Bertie. His friends in the block have constantly asked about him and miss him holding court in the lobby while neighbours spanning every generation stopped to talk to him, pouring out their hearts and appreciating his careful but nonjudgmental attention. Dad was born in Chicago Illinois and moved to Winnipeg with his family at the age of two. He was raised in Winnipeg but served in the American Army in Kentucky as a Master Sergeant for four years from 1948 during the Korean War. His hilarious army antics were endless and formed some of the best years of his life. Dad left the Army to return to Winnipeg to marry Mom, the woman of his dreams whom he had met in grade nine. They married on June 18, 1952 and Dad was welcomed into the warm, loving, and hilarious arms of Mom's large Italian family. Dad and Mom's family hit it off immensely and this Irish-English and Italian culture formed a rich tapestry for raising their two daughters. Dad was the quiet one often sitting in the background taking in the lively and raucous behaviour around him. He loved to listen to Mom play the piano or watch her jitterbug around the living room as he just smiled and shook his head. We never knew when he was going to come out with one of his quirky one-liners but when he did everyone was in stitches. Although a man of few words he could always be relied on to participate in whatever practical joke was being planned if he wasn't the instigator in the first place. His life was his family and his preference in his later years was to spend time with the people closest to him. His often gruff exterior never fooled us knowing his heart broke in a million pieces to see anyone having a difficult time. He encouraged us to pursue our dreams, accept what unfolded in our lives, appreciate and love the differences in others, and always be on time. One of our last big gatherings was a party at Winnipeg Beach for Mom and Dad's Fiftieth Anniversary. Guests came from all over the U.S. and Canada on this special occasion. Friends and family paid tribute to this couple who had been a part of their lives for over 60 years and spoke of Dad's kindness to them and /or were compelled to tell a typically hilarious Tom story. Dad just sat and beamed through the whole event. Although confined to a wheelchair during the last ten years Dad never complained about his situation but instead set about making the best of things and being as independent as possible. He loved to get on a plane two or three times a year to stay with Glory and Doug in Toronto with whom he had a special bond. They would go for lunches, shopping, and his all time favourite outing was to Woodbine Racetrack. At Woodbine an entourage of friends accompanied him and they would rely on him to help them make their bets while they laughed and enjoyed the buffet. Dad's treat of course. In the summer Mom and him would drive back and forth to their cottage at Winnipeg Beach where he was surrounded by friends and family. We will always picture him sitting under his tree enjoying the flowers, birds, and other little four legged visitors. Thank you Dad for the wonderful interesting loving life you showed us and your unwavering love to Mom. We will talk to you every day and miss you always. Safe passage to you now until we meet again. A Memorial Service in celebration of Dad's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Klassen Funeral Home. Reception will follow. BRUCE LYLE Suddenly on Friday, July 16, 2004, Bruce Lyle beloved husband of Mae Lyle of Carman passed away at the age of 70 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Dale (Rhonda) of Portage, Ed (Mary-Anne) of Morden, and Kevin (Tayne) of Winnipeg, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Larry (Doreen); and two sisters, Fern (Brian) Swift, and Shirley (Larry) Bluhm; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Prior to retirement in 1992, Bruce was the Town Administrator of Carman and worked for many years in municipal work, including Winnipeg. In his retirement years, he was very active in many community groups and enjoyed travelling and socializing with family and friends. Funeral service will be held from the Carman United Church on Monday, July 19, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Catherine Waldie officiating. Interment will take place in the Greenwood cemetery, Carman, Manitoba. Memorial donations may be made to the Carman Active Living Centre of a charity of one's choice.
