ELIZABETH IRETON

June 27, 2004

ELIZABETH BETTY IRETON February 14, 1921 - June 23, 2004 On June 23, 2004, peacefully and with family by her side, Betty passed into the loving hands of her Lord. Survived by her husband of 61 years, Tom; children, Pat (Bonnie), Maureen, Cathy, Colleen, Janie and Bridgid (Peter); nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Betty was born February 14, 1921 to John and Anna Stadnyk and spent her very early years in Arborg, MB, one of 14 children. After Betty and Tom married, they moved to Winnipeg where mom devoted her life to family. Betty was actively involved in church and school parent teacher's associations, always volunteering time and talents, whether it be canvassing, sewing, baking, telephoning; a member of the Catholic Women's League in St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Ann's RC Church in St. James, and eventually as convener of St. Vital Parish CWL with over 45 years of active service. When the opportunity came to re-open St. Maurice Parish School she took an active role in representing the Re-opening Committee at School Board meetings, and at City and Provincial government levels. Mom's determination to help in any way she could was always displayed along with a never ending supply of compassion, understanding and sincerity to every task she encountered. Nothing could get her down. In 1962 Mom and Dad built the home they live in today in Fort Garry and about this time Mom got involved in local politics. In 1969 she was elected as the first woman member of Fort Garry Municipal Council; received the Order of the Gate Award in 1973, given for contributing substantially to the betterment of the people and the community of Fort Garry. Betty was a City Councillor for Fort Garry Constituency from 1974 to 1977. Shortly after completing that term, she was appointed Chairperson of the Manitoba Government's Social Service Advisory Committee, who advised the Minister on matters relating to legislation, policy and programs and acted as an Appeal Board for social allowance recipients and applicants. We would like to thank the Fort Garry Care Centre, one and all, for their tender love and care of Mom these past five and a half years. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass to celebrate Mom's life will be held Monday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vital Church, 1629 Pembina Hwy., with Fr. Pat Morand officiating. STEVEN MALISKI

June 27, 2004

STEVEN MALISKI Born on September 29, 1911, Steven Maliski passed away on June 25, 2004. He was predeceased by his daughter Cathy, wife Helen, brother Joseph and Betty Maliski, sisters Helen Sacks, Anne and Hilding Nelson, Jean Crisko and Mary Smith. Steven is survived by his twin sister Julia Kiel (Peter) and brother-in-law Adam Sacks and Joe Crisko. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and their families. A man of infinite kindness, Steven will be remembered for the quiet comfort that he conveyed to those around him. He dwelt on the positives of life and living. He showed an inner strength in shouldering the burden of the illness and death of Cathy, his only child. While the pain of this tragedy lasted a lifetime his devotion and love towards Helen got them through the difficult times. In memories of Steven are recollections of the vibrancy of the North End. The neighbours, the corner store, the tailor, the doctor, the bakery, the church down the street and the proximity of Selkirk Avenue shops and streetcars, defined his familiar and friendly part of the world. The Maliski home was always open for company and always a refuge for nieces and nephews showered with warmth and affection. The garden was Steve's refuge and his flowers the proof of an intensely green thumb. At Helen and Steve's fiftieth wedding anniversary a song was written and performed as a tribute to this special and inseparable couple: The sun is shining - Steve is in the garden He's sowing seeds with patience into rows Steve plants with precision a finely tuned vision Of life and the loving he knows. Steven's career with the City of Winnipeg spanned thirty years. He worked as an engineering draftsman, primarily on detailing street profiles for construction. He always said if the street alignments were imperfect or the rain water did not flow to the catch basins, it invariably meant that the survey crews or the engineers made a mistake. Following retirement in the early days of Unicity, Steve and Helen acquired and operated a paint store on Henderson Highway. It was the little store that could. Master Painting Supplies became a neighbourhood institution. In the early 60's Steve and Helen moved to East Kildonan where they comfortably resided for the rest of their lives. When Helen was admitted to a nursing home, Steve's devotion continued with lengthy daily visits until she passed away last September. He lived in his own home and drove his own car (although a tad slowly) until six weeks ago. His wonderful neighbours and home care workers allowed him to maintain independence. The family is truly grateful for this support. Steve's life ended peacefully in the North 1 Wing of Concordia Hospital; a place of caring and compassion. Sincere thanks is extended to the hospital medical, nursing and support staff. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 29 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Bannerman Ave. and Arlington St. with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery alongside his loving wife Helen and daughter Cathy. Down the path the unknown lies Where destiny finds the soul And raises high the gleaming white Of infinite tomorrows. Not faith, not chance nor circumstance Can alter what is fat For He decides for all of us, When to swing the gate. By Noah Yauk CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
