Dad was born on March 6, 1931 in Malito Cosenza, Italy. Dad was predeceased by his dear wife of 49 years Giuseppina; his parents, Pasquale and Francesca; his brother and sister-in-law, Amerino and Ida Gatti (Edmonton); his sister Annina Cassano of Italy. Dad was the last surviving member of the Gatti family of Italy. Dad's memory will be forever cherished by his loving children, son Pasquale (Maria); daughters, Franca (Sal) Cesario, Teresa (Frank) Cianflone. Luigi was blessed with adoring grandchildren, Josie, Francesca, Gino, Jill, Adriana and Ciarra. Luigi is survived by his brother-in-law Francesco Cassano of Italy; and numerous nieces and nephews, Maria (Guido) Abate, Rosalbino (Nella) Cassano, Frank (Teresa) Cassano all in Toronto; Amerino (Armida) Cassano in Italy; Pasquale (Agata) Gatti, Vince (Pat) Gatti, Luigi (Susanna) Gatti in Edmonton. Also his many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Maione family. Dad married Mom on December 23, 1951 in their hometown in Malito. They first moved to Chambourg, France where dad was employed for three years in construction. Dad along with his wife and two children, Pasquale and Franca moved to Winnipeg in 1966 and soon after the arrival their third child Teresa was born. Dad's commitment to his family was his first priority in life. Dad worked a variety of occupations that included barbering, construction, and retired from his job at the age of 60 from the University of Manitoba maintenance department in the science faculty. Luigi was a fun loving person and all the students enjoyed his company. Luigi was always the life of the party he loved to entertain and cook for friends and family. Luigi's hobbies included his love of gardening, winemaking, and spending his afternoons with his friends at Grant Park Mall. Dad was a very caring and giving person and never asked for anything in return. He was proud of all his accomplishments including building his own home. A heartfelt thanks goes to Margaret Polhammer for her care, love and support that she provided to both Mom and Dad over the past five years. Her dedication to Dad and the family was above and beyond the call of duty. REMEMBER.... God saw you were getting older and tired. A cure was not to be, so God put his arms around you and whispered come with me. With tearful eyes we watched you suffer and watched you fade away although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove he only takes the best. So when it's lonesome here without you, know that we miss you more each day. Life will be different now that you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely and everything goes wrong we seem to hear you whisper "cheer up and carry on". Each time we see your picture you seem to smile and say don't cry I'm in God's keeping, we'll meet again someday. So we don't have to worry I know we'll be okay because now we have Nana and Nono hear us when we pray. - Love your Grandchildren Papa we will love you forever and will be in our hearts, we know now you are truly happy that you are with Mama in heaven for eternity. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, June 17 at 10:00 a.m. also at Holy Rosary Church with Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano officiating.
