Rose Rey

Peacefully at the St. Claude Pavilion, with family at her side, Mrs. Rose Yvonne Rey passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the age of 85 years. She leaves to mourn, her loving husband of 61 years Leon Rey; eight children Leonel (Simone), Simone (Normand) Dacquay, Norbert (Donna), Arthur (Lorie), Roland (Lorraine), Rene (Lorraine), Richard (Janet) and Mariette (Grant) Campbell; 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn one sister Marie (Albert) Collet and four sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Sophie and Antoine Chappellaz, two sisters, four brothers and two grandchildren (Marina and Joey). Prayers will be said in the St. Claude Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, March 27, 2005 at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the St. Claude Roman Catholic Church on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 2:00 pm with Mgr. Roger Bazin officiating. As expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the St. Claude Health Foundation, Box 400, St. Claude, Manitoba R0G 1Z0. The family would like to thank the staff of the St. Claude Pavilion, the St. Claude Hospital, Dr. Gisele Viens and Dr. A. Lazarus for their care and compassion. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Rose by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are in care of arrangements.

Dorothy Williams (nee Parker)

Peacefully with family at her side, Dorothy Williams, formerly of Portage la Prairie, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2005 at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre, Winnipeg, at the age of 97 years. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Stephen, son Kenneth, parents Frederick and Lavinia Parker and siblings Jack, Maude, Lavinia, Fred, Ethel, Frank, Winnifred and Charlie. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Pearl (Donald) MacPherson of Richmond BC and Donna (Bill) Smyth/Beasley of Dade City, Florida, sister Daisy (Cecil) Clark of Neepawa, Manitoba along with seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was born in Kirmington, England and came to Canada in 1925. She married Steve in 1929 and they made Portage la Prairie their home. She became a member of St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church and was very active in her service. She was president of the W.A. for 17 years and was a Life Member, led the Junior Auxilary and her main love was the Thrift Shop which she organized for years. Dorothy always kept busy. She was known for her quilting skills, knitting many sweaters and afghans, keeping her cookie jar full and making gingerbread for Christmas. Her grandchildren were the centre of her life and she was the centre of theirs. She lived a Christian life with strong family values. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 1:30pm at St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church, 36 2nd Street SW, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba with The Venerable Norman Collier officiating. Interment is to follow at Hillside Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to St. Mary’s la Prairie Organ Fund, 36 2nd Street SW, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 2A2. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Dorothy by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are in care of arrangements.

David “Blake” Taylor

Peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2005 Blake Taylor, of Winnipeg, passed away at the St Boniface Hospital at the age of 77 years. Blake was born to Marjorie and Dave Taylor of Poplar Point, Manitoba on May 6, 1927. He spent his early years and received his education in Poplar Point. Blake began work at farms around the area of High Bluff and was also part of a ground crew at the Air Force Base #7AOS that is now Southport. He went from there to the mechanical trade at many different dealerships and garages in and around Manitoba until he made the move to the aviation field. He worked for Standard Aero in the Winnipeg shop as a rotary motor technician/mechanic until his retirement. Blake married Irene Smith in the spring of 1966 and they spent many years together until Irene’s passing in 1999. His hobbies began with motorcycles. He did a little racing and also built his own hill climber bike which proved to win him many trophies. In the later part of life he built and flew radio controlled airplanes. He will be missed by his friends at the Senior Club, special friend Mary, many other friends and family. Blake is survived by special friend Mary Schmit, sister Coleen O’Halloran, brother Floyd Taylor, nieces Jill Marchant (Tom) and Jane Taylor (Mark), nephews Randy Taylor (Frankie), Andy Taylor (Tracey) and Bob Taylor (Pam). In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private burial at a later date. If one wishes, donations may be made in Blake’s memory to the cancer care of your choice. ie Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St. Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8. Robert Arnold Payette

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Robert Arnold Payette on Monday, March 14, 2005 at the Portage District General Hospital. Robert passed away at the age of 68 years. He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Eva Payette; brothers Martin, Damus and Maurice; and sisters Kathleen Borley, Ruth Dack and Ida Smith. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved common-law wife Joni Bowman with her daughter Vicki, age 15, both of Portage la Prairie; son Randy Payette of Portage la Prairie and daughter Roxanne (Curtis) Sanderson with grandson Jared Payette, age 14, all of Portage la Prairie. He also leaves behind his brother Charlie (Delia) Payette and sisters Margaret (Frank Chester) Huddlestone and Mary Buck all of Portage la Prairie along with many nieces, nephews and special friends. Robert was born in Layland, Manitoba and attended the Kelvin school. He married Roseanne Fleury and together they had two children Roxanne and Randy. They later divorced. Robert worked at the MDC for 18 years on the grounds and in the laundry. After taking an early retirement, he has spent the last 10 years living with Joni and Vicki. Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, boxing, carpentry and creating works of art with wood. Music was important to him and he played lead guitar with different bands over the years. He will be remembered for collecting zippo lighters. Robert loved spending time with his family and relaxing in his chair and watching T.V. He was a very determined, single minded, proud and an independent person. He was talented in many ways and had a good sense of humor. He was a member of the A.N.A.F. Robert was a very loving man, devoted to his family with a special fondness for children and animals. Prayers will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 7:30 pm led by Deacon Bill Parrack. Funeral Service will take place on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 11:00 am at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel with Celebrant Father Michael Wollbaum. Robert will be buried in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Robert’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8. Morris “Moe” Cartman

Peacefully, on March 13, 2005 Morris “Moe” Cartman passed away at the Lions Prairie Manor at the age of 74 years. Moe was predeceased by his beloved wife Lorraine (1992); brothers Melvin, Hughie, Frank, Allan and sister Ada MacIntosh. He is lovingly remembered by daughter Karen (Trevor Found) of Portage la Prairie, sons John (Bev) Cartman of Carman, Bradley of Winnipeg, and son-in-law Gump Wiebe of Portage la Prairie and his grandchildren Stephanie, Mike, and Ashley. He also leaves behind his siblings Delores (Norman) Kaminsky of Winnipeg, and Edna Cathcart of Winnipeg, and many nieces and nephews. Moe was born on October 30, 1930 in Portage la Prairie, and started working at Vopni Press as a carrier and worked his way up to the linotype machine. After a number of years he was offered head of production. Then came the opportunity of being a Sports Editor after complaining he could do a better job. He showed Portage the importance of sports right up till the year his wife Lorraine passed away in 1992. He did continue to keep Portage informed though through his “Moe’s Mumblings in the Shopper paper. On October 13, 1956 Moe married the love of his life Lorraine Johnson. They lived in Portage all through their marriage which produced three children - his “favorite” daughter Karen, John and Brad. Moe was very proud of John’s golfing abilities and Brad for his writing. Moe came across as grumpy but had a heart of gold. He was not the most patient man, if he was scheduled to take a picture at 7:00 and the team wasn’t ready, he left and the picture would not be taken. He participated in curling, baseball in his younger years and enjoyed golf and fishing later in life. Many times a dollar was passed among family members through the cribbage games that went on. You weren’t even in the door and he was shuffling the cards. One of Moe’s favorite times was going to the Terriers games. He had a great love for them. He would be offered tickets to the Winnipeg Jets games and would always say “why when I can get better hockey here at home.” Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 1:00 pm. at the Portage Centennial Arena, 390 1st Street NW, in Portage la Prairie. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Moe ’s memory to the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N OK8 or to Portage Terriers, P.O. Jacques Alexandre Allard

Suddenly on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 Jacques “Jack” A. Allard of Newton was taken from us. In the company of friends and family, Jack succumbed to a sudden heart attack at the age of 48 years. He is predeceased by his father Laurent Allard on March 14, 1995 and his father-in-law Micheal David Tomlinson on November 16, 2000. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Catherine (nee) Tomlinson, and his children Tom, Jacie, Jesse, Crystal, Jonathan, Justin and Caleb all of Newton MB. Also left to mourn is his mother Laurette Allard, seven brothers and sisters, Dennis Allard of Portage la Prairie, Michelle (Florent) Beaudin of St. Laurent, Sylvie (Ralph) Piche of Fannystelle, Luc (Diane) Allard of St. Francois, Marie-Anne (Bill) Fitzgerald of St. Eustache, Veronique (Brian) Gibson of Winnipeg and Elisabeth Thomas of Vancouver BC, the Tomlinson family, mother-in-law Glady Tomlinson, Barb (Rick) Brown, John (Verlie) Tomlinson, Teresa Tomlinson, Darrell Tomlinson, Violet (Marty) Polson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was born November 11, 1956 the fifth child of Laurent and Laurette nee Bernardin Allard of St Francois Xavier, MB. Jack grew up in the St. Francois (Lido Plage) area. The Allard farm was the site of many pond hockey games, dirt bike races, baseball games and just spending time with neighbors, friends and family. People would just drop in and soon they were off on some adventure. Jack graduated from St. Paul’s Collegiate in Elie in 1975 and soon was employed with MTS with whom he was employed at the time of his passing. Jack was employed with MTS all his working life. A faithful and hard working man, Jack will especially be remembered as a loving and caring husband and father. Jack and Cathy are home teaching their children and Jack was instrumental in their education and up bringing. Jack was a Christian, a deeply religious man; church and God were always at the center of the Allard’s family life. Jack will be deeply missed by family, friends, co-workers and anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His strength of character, devotion to God and family and love of life have inspired all of those who knew Jack the husband, father, son, brother and friend. A time of viewing and visitation for family and friends will take place on Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Community Fellowship Church in Newton, MB from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and prior to the service. Funeral Service for Jack Allard will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, March 14, 2005 at Community Fellowship Church in Newton, MB with Pastor Ramsy Unruh officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Portage la Prairie. In lieu of flowers if friends so desire donations may be made in Jack’s memory to World Vision P.O. Box 1000, Stn. Streetsville, Mississauga, ON L5M 9Z9 or Gospel for Asia 245 King St. E, Stoney Creek, ON L8G 1L9. The Allard Family Trust Fund has been established at the Portage Credit Union, 19 Royal Rd. Richard "Dick" Hamilton Garrioch

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Richard “Dick” Hamilton Garrioch on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 82 years. Left to mourn is his wife Celine Espenell of Portage la Prairie; his children Willy (Tannis) Espenell and Jacki Hutlet both of Portage la Prairie; and his grandchildren Shea, Tracy and Kristy. Dick was born March 18, 1922 in Portage la Prairie. He received his grade three education and claimed to do everything the hard way to receive the rest of his education. In his early years, Dick worked for various local farmers and later moved to Drydon, Ontario where he was employed in the lumber mill. When he returned to Portage, he began a farm operation of his own. He loved raising horses and breaking them to drive and found much pleasure in hunting and farming. Dick was known for tinkering with old tractors and trucks. He made the best out of what he had. Every year he and Celine would attend both the Morris Stampede and the Austin Threshermens Reunion. Dick was a quiet man who found his happiness in his family and friends. He enjoyed his life with others and was rarely ever seen alone. He and his wife Celine would visit the Co-op coffee shop almost daily, always having a story to tell someone or a good joke to share. Dick will be remembered for his unforgettable smile; the smirk on his face; and that special twinkle in his eye. A time visitation will take place on Thursday evening, July 29, 2004 at 7:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Funeral will be held on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 1:30 pm with Wilma Shirriff officiating at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Interment is to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
