John Paul Moose-Pitts
Tragically on Saturday, June 19, 2004, John Paul Moose of Portage la Prairie died at the age of 20 years. John Paul was predeceased by his grandparents Shirley and Charlie Pitts and MJ Pitts of Meaford ON. Left to cherish his memory are his mother Joyce Moose, father John Pitts, along with family members special Uncle Ed Pritchett, Fred Moose, Margaret Moose, Nancy and Etienne Robinson, Edith Moose, Helen and Doug Prince and family, Russell Pritchett, Betty Pritchett, Adam and Allan Pritchett and many friends. John Paul was born January 17, 1984 at Thompson, Manitoba. He was raised in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie and attended PCI. He always enjoyed soccer, basketball and hackie sac and dreamed of one day opening his own sports bar. John Paul was smart and always there for his friends. He was also easy going and loved to be the life of the party, living life to the fullest. John Paul worked at the Mac’s Convenience Store here in Portage la Prairie and was a dedicated and honest employee who was well liked by his employers, co-workers and customers. “John Paul you will be truly missed by one and all but will never be forgotten in all our hearts.” A time of visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. There will be a private memorial service at a later time. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in John Paul’s memory at CIBC - 7 Sask. Ave East, Portage la Prairie, MB towards a Sports Scholarship at Portage Collegiate Institute. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of John Paul by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are in care of arrangements.
Newman Myran
On Saturday, June 19, 2004 Newman Myran, of Dakota Plains, beloved husband of Sandra passed away at the age of 58 years. Newman was predeceased by his parents Jessie Myran and Percy Chaske and sister Beatrice Pratt. He is lovingly remembered by his brothers Brian Chaske of Dakota Plains and Tom Chaske of Brandon, sister Dorothy Chaske of Brandon, aunts Grace Siha of Portage la Prairie, Gloria McKay of Peguis and Maggie McKinney of Swan Lake and many nieces and nephews. Wake will be held at Dakota Plains School, Dakota Plains on Thursday evening, June 24, 2004 with the Funeral Service to follow on Friday, June 25, 2004 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Donald Pratt officiating. Burial will take place at Dakota Plains Cemetery. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Newman by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are in care of arrangements.
Harvey and Lottie Brown

Lottie Brown (nee Bowker)
A number of years ago Alzhemiers took my mother from us but in so doing she gained a new family of very dedicated nurses and staff at the Lions Prairie Manor. There is no way that our family could possibly say enough thank yous to the entire staff for your love and wonderful care you gave to her, you have made the last six and a half years of her life so much more enjoyable and comfortable than we believe the family ever could have achieved. Also for the friendship and love shown to Dad on his many visits to be with her. In her 97th year on Monday, June 14, 2004 from the home that gave her so much love at the Lions Prairie Manor, Lottie Brown passed away. She was born in Howarth Yorkshire England on January 24, 1907 and came to Canada with her family at the age of 21. Mom worked at Fullers Bakery where she met the love of her life Harvey. They were married on May 24, 1937 and for 64 years were very devoted to each other. They moved to Niagara Falls living there for 8 years before returning to Portage. Mom continued to work at Fullers part time for a number of years. She became involved in teaching nursery school and was a leader with the Brownies as well as an Explorer leader. She was a worker for Trinity United Church and belonged to the women’s group there. Mom was always busy sewing, baking and knitting for her family, but her most treasured times were those she spent with her family and specially her grandchildren whom she adored and they her. Predeceased by her husband Harvey on April 25, 2001, she leaves to cherish the wonderful memories of her, her daughter Marion whom Mom was always there for and son-in-law Clark Campbell who she considered to be her son, both of Portage la Prairie; grandson Todd Campbell of Portage la Prairie; granddaughter Patti and husband David Carriere with great grandchildren Shae-Lynn and Brice all of Portage la Prairie; grandson Wade Campbell and wife Amy with great-grandson Griffen all of Winnipeg; brother Jack Bowker of British Columbia, Doreen Walker of Toronto ON and Mary Brown of Sudbury ON along with many nieces and nephews. Mom was also predeceased by her sister Marion Stahan as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law. In keeping with both Mom and Dad’s wishes there will be a Graveside service on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at Hillside Cemetery with Rev. Julie Baker officiating. Guests are asked to meet at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 9:45 am for the procession to the cemetery. Violet Elizabeth Breakey (nee Graham)
On April 1, 2004 at her residence in the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie, Vi Breakey, wife of the late James Washington Breakey, passed away at the age of 96 years. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Graveside Service will be held at the Brandon Cemetery - Lawn Section (on west side of 18th Street) at 10:30 am on Monday, June 21, 2004. You are welcome to meet at the cemetery or join in the procession to Brandon which will be leaving McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 8:45 am. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Vi‘s memory to Portage and District Foundation Inc., P.O. Christina Irvine Kowalski (nee Keddie)
Peacefully on Monday, June 14, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Irvine Kowalski passed away at the age of 77 years. Predeceased by hIrvine was a kind and generous person to all who knew her. A lover of animals, a keen gardener and very much appreciated for her sense of humour. She was always thinking of others in their time of need and remained a friend forever. Irvine was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #3. Irvine was a kind and generous person to all who knew her. A service to celebrate Irvine’s life will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 1:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Road S., Portage la Prairie with The Rev. Norman Collier officiating. In keeping with Irvine’s wishes there will be a joint interment for both Irvine and Bill Kowalski at Hillside Cemetery following the reception. Alvin Philip Williams
On Monday, June 7, 2004 at the Portage District General Hospital, Alvin Philip Williams passed away at the age of 84 years. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Flossie; brothers Orval, Vern “Bunny”, Gordon (Joan) and Jim (Doreen) and brother-in-law Eldon McMillan, he will be lovingly remembered by his wife Phyllis of Portage la Prairie; children Richard “Butch” Williams of Vancouver, Alvin Jr. Williams and David (Glenda) Williams all of Portage la Prairie; sister Lillian McMillan and sister-in-law Evelyn Williams both of Portage la Prairie; grandchildren Ryan (Lisa) Williams and Jenny Williams all of Portage la Prairie; great grandchildren Darius, Devin and Davyin Williams all of Portage la Prairie; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends. Alvin was born on May 26, 1920 the third child of Harry and Fossie Williams. He grew up on a farm where he helped the family until he enlisted in WWII in 1940. He served for five years and during this time he suffered from a dislodged heart. After the war he worked various jobs until he became an engineer and worked at the Portage Hospital. He loved the outdoors and spent most of his time fishing, canoeing and taking walks in the bush. He spent a great deal of time at a few relatives’ farms herding cattle, catching moles etc. Quite a stubborn man, Alvin wanted things done his way, although he was willing to listen to others opinions when he thought it necessary. Always a thoughtful neighbor he often looked for ways to help others, whether it be bringing over a care package of firewood or canned goods, or some tools to help fix a car. He was always willing and ready! Alvin was a truthful, thoughtful one-of-a -kind man. He will be greatly missed and his memory always treasured. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Alvin by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who were in care of arrangements.
Lillian “Loreen” Marie McFarlane (nee Demman)
With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Lillian “Loreen” McFarlane (nee) Demman on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at the Portage General Hospital at the age of 75 years. She is predeceased by her beloved husband William “Bill” McFarlane, parents Katherine and Allan Demman and son Murnie McFarlane. Left to cherish her memory are her children Charlene (Jerry) Lavallee of Winnipeg, Dellanne McFarlane , Cynthia (Stanley) Sharp and Crystal McFarlane, all of Portage la Prairie and grandchildren Christopher Lavallee, Azure-Dee Sharp, Brenin McFarlane and Ashley McFarlane. Loreen was born November 4, 1928 in Brandon Manitoba. On January 16, 1945 she married Bill McFarlane and they lived most of their lives in Portage la Prairie. Loreen worked as a clerk at Eatons and Hans Christian Toy Store and was also employed at Campbell Soup. She loved family outings, yard sales and gardening. Loreen enjoyed sewing and crocheting and her crafts were beautiful works of art. She shared her talents with the Portage After Five Club and spent many hours volunteering for the Fort la Reine Museum. Friends and family are invited to gather at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel for a Farewell at 1:30 pm on Friday, June 11, 2004, prior to leaving in procession at 2:00 pm to the Oakville Cemetery for a Graveside Service conducted by Pastor Larry Bird. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Loreen‘s memory to The Fort la Reine Museum , Box 744, Portage la Prairie, Mb R1N 3C2. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Loreen by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are in care of arrangements.
