Lorna Jean McMunn (nee Westbrook)
On Sunday, October 26, 2003 with her husband Dennis at her side, Lorna Jean McMunn of Portage la Prairie, has gone to be and ever with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 57 years.
Daughter of the late Ivan and Phyllis Westbrook.
Those wishing to pay last respects along with a Service of Farewell for the late Lorna McMunn are invited to the First Presbyterian Church on Royal Road S. here in Portage la Prairie on Sunday, November 2, 2003 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm with the service commencing at 7:15 pm. The Funeral Service will take place at the Virden First Presbyterian Church in Virden, MB on Monday, November 3, 2003 at 1:00 pm with viewing in the church from 11:00 to 11:45 am. Rev. Jean Bryden will be officiating both services. Interment is to follow at Oak River Cemetery, Oak River, MB.

Catherine Jean Ettinger (nee Boak)
Peacefully on Friday, October 24, 2003 at Lion’s Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Catherine Jean Ettinger passed away at the age of 94 years.
Born and raised in Edwin, Manitoba, Jean later moved to Fort William, Ontario where she married and began her family. She worked as a Red Cross Homemaker for many years helping others until her retirement. Jean enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as gardening and swimming.
She will be lovingly remembered by one son David (Brenda) of Thunder Bay Ontario; three grandchildren Tammy Bunk of Thunder Bay Ontario, David and Shannon Ettinger of Winnipeg Manitoba; six great grandchildren; sister Mabel (Ray) Voss of Burnside; brother Clarence Boak of Portage la Prairie; sister-in-law Margaret Boak of Edwin Manitoba along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her husband Waldo “Ray” Ettinger in 1983, parents David and Isabel Boak, two brothers George and Art and a sister Marion Rollick.
Cremation has taken place and a private burial shall be conducted at a later date.

Victor Allan Waddell
Victor Allan Waddell passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2003 with family at his side, at the Lions Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie.
Victor was born November 19, 1921 to John Robert and Nellie Waddell at Sperling, Manitoba. On November 19, 1948 he married Muriel Hunter.
He served in the R.C.A.F. in World War II and then farmed on the family farm at Sperling. In 1960 they moved to a farm at Portage la Prairie until 1979 when they moved to town.. In July 2000 Victor moved into the Lions Prairie Manor due to ill health.
He is lovingly remembered by his caring wife Muriel, daughter Betty Ann, son Terry (Ellen), daughter Kathy, son Bruce, daughter Mary-Lee (Brian) Chartrand and son Rickey along with 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Victor will also be remembered by his brother Wilfred (Joan), sister-in-law Olive, nephews, nieces and numerous friends.
Victor listened to the simple message of the gospel told by two of God’s servants, making his choice to serve God in March 1949. He was faithful to his choice till his passing.
A visitation will be held Monday, October 27, 2003 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Road S., Portage la Prairie.
Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at 2:00 pm in the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Road N., Portage la Prairie, officiated by Richard Knight and David Jury. Interment is to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Kathleen Louise Thompson (nee Shackell)
On Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at the Douglas Campbell Lodge, Kathleen Louise Thompson passed away with her children at her side.
Kaye was born on September 27, 1916, daughter of Douglas and Laura Shackell at Shaunovan, Saskatchewan, where she was raised and received her education. The family moved to Portage la Prairie in 1931. Here she and her mother operated a wool shop for several years. On December 27, 1939 she married Erwin Thompson and they resided in Portage la Prairie.
Kaye was a faithful member of the St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church and for a period was the choral director of the St. Mary’s la Prairie Youth Choir. She trained as a singer and pianist winning many musical awards at various music festivals. She also sang with her father’s dance band for several years and was a member of his “Sweet and Low Singers” choir. Kaye was a member of the O.O.R.P. Lodge #66 Portage and served as the Honourable Royal Lady and was presented her Royal Purple life time membership.
Kaye also was a member of the Altar Guild of St. Mary’s Anglican Church and a member of the Portage Hospital Volunteer Guild.
Special fun filled times were spent for many years at Delta with her family and friends.
Predeceased by her husband Erwin, grandson Dennis Thompson, she leaves to mourn her passing her son Dennis and his wife Kathy, daughter Linda Blake, grandchildren Douglas (Jill) Thompson all of Portage la Prairie, Richard Blake (Christine) of Darcy Birken, BC and Robert (Georgette) Metcalfe of Darcy Birken, BC as well as seven great grandchildren Adam and Charlotte Thompson of Portage la Prairie, Sadie and Bailey Del Bigio (Blake), Clara Del Bigio of Winnipeg and Harrison and Wyatt Metcalfe of Darcy Birken.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 3:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel with The Rev. Norman Collier officiating.

William Bert Kilbourne “Sharkey”
With great sadness we announce the passing of William Bert Kilbourne better known as Sharkey on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the age of 81 years.
He was predeceased by his parents Eva and Bob, sisters Velma Foulds and Mabel Harrison and brother Harvey. Sharkey leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 57 years Lou of Portage la Prairie; brother Art (Eileen) of Winnipeg, sisters Dot Hunter of Nanaimo BC and Gladys Brown of Brandon MB along with many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, cousins and special nieces and nephews and their families.
Sharkey will always be remembered for his quick wit and story telling. He loved people and especially children and had a story for everyone. One could never be quite sure if the story was the truth or otherwise. He loved to tell you that he only had seven dollars in the bank and was very proud to be an award winning member of the liars club. As well Sharkey would proudly proclaim that he was the “mayor” of 16 Street. Sharkey and Lou enjoyed the card gang who turned into the happy gang as they shared supper together.
Sharkey joined the army at the age of 18 years and soon attained the rank of Sergeant. He received five medals during his 5 and half years of service. He served with the Princess Patricia Light Infantry. He served in nine different countries and was proud to be a part of the liberation of Holland. Out of his great respect for those who served, Sharkey was very instrumental in establishing the Wall of Honour at the Fort la Reine Museum. He found much pleasure in volunteering at the Fort. He was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Elks BPOE and was very active in the Masonic Lodge Assiniboine #7 achieving the office of Worshipful Master.
Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at 1:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel with Rev. Margaret Scott officiating. Interment is to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Denise Marie Jeanne Boudreau (nee Bohemier)
June 19, 1943 - October 14, 2003
Denise was an exceptional mother and spiritual person who lived her faith by loving unconditionally. She had a gift for making people feel loved and valued. Her life was a gift to us and inspired us to achieve our goals in life. Denise was a warm, caring compassionate person who was always willing to help. She was a beautiful person with a radiant smile, laughing eyes and a good sense of humor.
Denise worked for Globe General Agencies in St. Boniface for 15 years providing exceptional service to the tenants whom she got to know personally. She retired from that job in 1998 and relocated to Portage la Prairie to be close to her only son and family. She adored her 2 grandkids and created many fond memories with all her nieces and nephews.
Denise loved to take drives out to the country where she visited many teahouses and restaurants, collecting “rare gems” along the way.
She leaves to mourn her husband Roland of 22 years of Portage la Prairie; her only child Gilles Lorteau and daughter-in-law Carol and grandkids Steve and Paul all of Portage la Prairie; her sister Claudette Veinotte of Winnipeg; and her sisters-in-law June Bohemier of Winnipeg and Florence Bohemier of BC. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers Ray and Gilles. She also leaves her many special nieces and nephews Marc, Michelle (Tim), Erin (Miguel), Essence, and newborn Xavier, Ron (Angie), Joanne (Paul), Rick and Gisele and their respective families.
The family would like to thank the nurses and the support staff at the Portage General Hospital and at the Douglas Campbell Lodge for the unconditional love and care shown towards Mom. A special thank you to Dr. David Kinnear and Dr. Jim Ross for their expertise and advice in managing Mom’s illness.
Funeral Service to be held on Friday October 17, 2003 at 1:30 pm at the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, 1125 Sask, Ave E. in Portage la Prairie with Prayers beginning at 1:00 pm. The Celebrant will be Father Michael Wollbaum.

Marion Stahan (nee Bowker)
On Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 11:00 am, a graveside service will be held for Marion Stahan (Bowker), formerly of Portage la Prairie. The cremains of Marion will have final resting place alongside her husband Frank Stahan at Hillside Cemetery in Portage.
Marion died peacefully at Ottawa-Carleton Hospital, Ottawa, Ontario on May 13, 2003 in her 93rd year of fulfilled life. Her family was at her side. Marion was born in England. Her family immigrated to Portage in 1927. Settling on a farm in Poplar Point, the family eventually moved to Portage where her father operated a butcher shop. Upon completion of school, Marion worked in Fuller’s Bakery. Marion and husband Frank relocated several times during their lifetime, living in Sudbury, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Toledo, Ohio, USA. Marion had a reputation for her knitting, sewing, and crocheting skills of which her handmade gifts were greatly admired. A full time homemaker during her child rearing years, Marion had a business career later in life as a box office manager for 15 years in an events area in Toledo. Marion was outgoing, enjoyed working with the public and meeting people. Upon retirement, she and husband Frank relocated to Ottawa. Sharing her joy of life and gracious offerings helping others are welcome surviving sons Ralph (Elaine) of Stittsville, and Jay (Andrea) of Boston, USA; grandchildren Jaedra and Jaral of Boston; sister Lottie Brown of Portage and brother Jack of New Westminster, BC. Surviving nieces in Manitoba include Marion Lynn (Clark) Campbell of Portage la Prairie and Shirley Mickoski of Minnedosa. Friends and family are asked to gather at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie at 11:00 am. on October 16.

May Porter (nee Carroll)
On Sunday, September 28, 2003 Gertrude May Porter, widow of the late Jim Porter, passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Douglas Campbell Lodge at the age of 83 years.
Born on August 14, 1920, daughter of Allan and Gertrude Carroll of rural Portage, May grew up on the family farm and attended Mount Pleasant School. After her schooling, she continued to work on the farm until her marriage on June 1st, 1943 to James Fairly (Jim) Porter. The couple then made their home in the City of Portage where they worked and raised their family.
In 1964, May went to work at the Portage Correctional Centre for Women where she would remain employed for 20 years. Among her other duties, she was instrumental in implementing a crafts program for the residents and upon her retirement in 1985, she was honoured with an Exemplary Service Medal for long and distinguished service in the corrections field. She was the first woman to receive this award.
After retirement, May went on several bus tours with a group of friends; she volunteered at the McKenzie Mission Thrift Shop and the Herman Prior Centre. She loved to play cards and belonged to a group of ladies that met weekly for many years. May was a lifelong member of the Ruth Rebekah Lodge.
After Jim’s death in 1991, May moved to the Oddfellows Towers where she was active on the Recreation Committee for several years. In October of 2002, she moved to the Douglas Campbell Lodge where she has spent the last year in the excellent care of the staff there.
May is survived by her daughter Elaine and son-in-law Rusty Rutherford; son Earl and daughter-in-law Terrie Porter; and grandchildren Mathew and Cole Porter, all of Portage la Prairie.
Predeceased by brothers Oscar, Roy and Bob Carroll and sisters-in-law Clara and Edna Carroll, May is also survived by one brother J.D. Carroll, sister-in-law Mae Carroll and brother-in-law Don Gray, all of Portage la Prairie as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 2:00 pm with Rev. Keith Boughton officiating. Interment is to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
