James was born in Montreal, Quebec on May 7, 1936. He was the youngest of six children. He married his sweetheart, Monique Roberge, who was from a little town in Northern Ontario. They were married 48 years ago on May 28, 1955. In those 48 years of marriage they had five children: Della (Jeff) Enns of Steinbach, Steve (Janine) Boulanger of Grand Pointe, Man., Annette (Andrew) Moline of Hannibal, Missouri, Cindy (Jim) Gunther of Steinbach, and Nathan (Karla) Boulanger of Steinbach; as well as nine grandchildren: Rachel (16), Stephanie (15), Amanda (11), Meghan (6), Terra (15 months), Max (3), Matthew (19 months), Nicole (6), and Ashley (2). Life hasn't always been easy for James, but he always tried to look on the bright side of things. You'd often hear him say, "There are so many people who are worse off than we are." He was a generous man who was always willing to help someone in need if he could. He had many different jobs in many different trades and was well respected by all who worked with and/or for him. He was a hardworking man and was never afraid of a hard day's work. He was a miner for many years in northern Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. A mining accident took much of his eyesight, which left him unable to work again. He was forced to retire at the young age of 42. He loved to be outdoors. You'd always see him outside puttering around the yard or just sitting at the picnic table watching the world go by. He loved his music and he passed on his love for music to his children. He loved nothing more than to hear his children sing. He loved his family and was often humored by his grandchildren. He loved nothing more than to see them happy. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in those who loved him. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Bethesda Hospital for the excellent care they provided. The funeral service was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003. ALVIN REIMER Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, surrounded by the love of God and family, Alvin Reimer of Blumenort, Man. peacefully went home to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ with His Lord and Saviour at the age of 54. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Julianna; and children, Sheldon and Kim, Tim, Theresa; his grandchildren, Cassidy, Shayna, Caitlyn and Bradley. Waiting for Dad in heaven are his parents, Abraham and Marie Reimer, and one brother Ernie Reimer. Dad met Mom in 1967 and fell in love with her. They were married Oct. 9, 1970, and as the years went on they fell more and more in love with each other. As Mom was heard to say, "I married the groom at the wedding, but lived with the best man for the rest of his life." After Sheldon, Tim and Theresa came along that love only grew stronger and deeper. Dad was said to be, by his employers, one of the most dedicated employees one could have - he gave his all to the job. Dad loved to drive truck, as long as he could come home at night. During the past two years, as Dad fought his battle with cancer, he taught us all what bravery and courage were all about. Those of us who loved him and were with him the most, never heard a complaint or a grumble out of him. He took everything in his stride and always made sure that we were okay. The best blessing that we received during this time was watching Dad's relationship with God grow stronger every day. Dad's strength and courage came directly from God and Dad was always the first to give God all the credit. He was known to say "It's not my will or the doctors', but God's will alone." The loss of Dad will leave a huge void in our lives. The grandkids will miss playing hide and seek with Grandpa and we will all miss his love, laughter and advice. We want to thank Dr. Krahn and the rest of the staff at the Steinbach Chemo Centre for the wonderful care they took of our loved one, who in his times of weakness made his family so very strong. The funeral service for Alvin Reimer was held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2 p.m., at the Ridgewood EMC, with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment at the Ridgewood Cemetery. AGNES STAHN Peacefully, July 7, 2003 at Bethesda Place, Steinbach, Man., Agnes Stahn passed away at the age of 75 years, two months, 13 days. Agnes is survived by four daughters, three sons, 28 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren: Marge, Walter (Betty), Wally, John (Mary), Helen (Jake), Christie (Melvin), Bernie (Sandra). She is survived by one brother John and brother-in-law Isbrand. Agnes was predeceased by her husband Alfred in 1988, five children in infancy, one great-granddaughter, one sister Eva, son-in-law Dick and her parents. Agnes loved gardening and sewing blankets. She loved working outdoors and spending time with her family. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 11, 2003, 2 p.m., at St Paul Lutheran Church, 465 Henry St. in Steinbach, with interment at the Peters' family cemetery in Mitchell. Viewing to be held Thursday, July 10, 7-8 p.m., at Loewen Funeral Chapel, 5 Chrysler Gate in Steinbach. Devotional to be held at 8 p.m. The family wishes to thank the Bethesda Place staff and Dr. Kaethler for their care. Donations may be made to Bethesda Place and Parkinsons Society of Canada. Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach NETTIE BERG With her children at her side, Nettie Berg left this world peacefully to be with the Lord. Nettie was born May 25, 1913 to Diedrich and Marie Hildebrandt in Halbstadt, Man., where she lived until she married William Berg on July 9, 1936. Together they had eight children. Nettie was predeceased by her husband William in 1992 and two daughters in infancy. She is survived by three sons: Bill, Ben (Meryle), John (Jackie); three daughters: Mary, Susan (Murray), Gerdie (Vern); 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; also by three sisters and three brothers. Nettie lived for her family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The funeral service was held Friday, July 4, 2003 from the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church at Stuartburn, Man., with interment in the church cemetery. In memory of Nettie Berg, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0S6. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care Mother received in the Altona Eastview Place Personal Care Home from all the care givers. Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona, Man., in care of arrangements. THOMAS MALCOLM GARDNER Tom was born in Winnipeg, Man., Sept. 30, 1937 and passed away at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, July 2, 2003. For the past number of years Tom had been attending the Martha Rempel Centre, formerly the Development Centre, ACL in Steinbach, Man. The Lord blessed Tommy with many special attributes ­ among them a unique stubbornness, a special form of loving, confident arrogance, a quaint sense of humor and an unconditional love for all. But his most special trait was his judgement of character. You could often watch Tommy observe others in their daily activities, their responses and actions towards one another and not only him. He would base his assessment on these many tiny details and not on a person's social status, religion, color, or race, totally without malice or prejudice. Being held in high esteem by Tommy had a very special significance to all those who knew him and valued his much sought after approval. Tom could often be seen being mildly amused at how others around him could make small problems in life so large as not possible to overcome, for he knew that with the Lord's help these problems were nothing, if but a minor inconvenience. He had a great interest in the activities of those around him and was often eager to participate. Through all his troubles, Tommy would never complain. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Georgina Gardner. He is survived by his sister Joanne Fasker of Ottawa, Ont.; brothers Stuart Gardner of Stony Creek and Robert Gardner of Winnipeg. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his foster parents, Kim and John Klassen; his very special foster brothers, Matthew, Jordan, Marcus, and Marcus' wife Cathy; foster grandmother Mary Klassen; special aunt Edith (Madge) Mager; and Marj Guenther (friend). He will also be dearly missed by his many friends. For all the love and support given to Tom and the Klassen family ­ the family would like to thank the staff at the Martha Rempel Centre and Retirement Program (ACL), Dr. Dennis Giesbrecht and the nurses at Bethesda Hospital, Larry Hirst (Bethesda Chaplain), Gordon Reimer (social worker), Robin Stefanyshyn (public trustee), and Edith Bezditny and Rudy Wauhkowen, for being there for Tom. A private graveside service was held at Gary Memorial Park in Winnipeg, July 4, at 1 p.m., with Larry Hirst officiating and Thomson Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 11, 4:30 p.m., at Bethesda Place (Personal Care Home), Steinbach, with Larry Hirst officiating. In Tommy's own words, "I'm fine" and we are sure he is. ROSIANA DOAN (nee Stark) Rosiana Doan passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at River East Personal Care Home, with her sister Irene at her side. Rosiana was born Oct. 26, 1922 to parents Ferdinand and Mary Stark. She was predeceased by her parents; son Garnet; brothers, William and Edward; and sister Violet. She is survived by daughters: Eleanor (Don) Snitka, Betty (Nils) Bordal, Pat (Gary) Kozun, Paulette (Hans) Barthel, and Jennifer Doan; sons: Warren Doan and Keith (Jo-Anne) Doan; grandchildren: Scott and Tessa Snitka, Sheldon (Alita) and Todd Bordal, Cameron Kozun, Reece (Correna), Conrad Barthel, Charles and Nadine Granger and Melissa, Brendan and Gavin Doan; great-grandchildren: Donovan Snitka, Bailey Love, Austin Bordal; brothers: Alvin (Betty), Elmer (Anne), and Harry (Shirley); sisters: Irene (Ron) Davey, Grace (Dennis) Patterson, Shirley (Dong) Grey; special aunt Adeline Michaluk; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Rose was born in Hochstadt, Man. She attended a country school and at an early age went to Winnipeg, Man. to seek employment. She married in 1944 and raised her family with strength and guidance until her last days. She was an extremely hard worker and demonstrated equality long before the Women's Lib movement. Rose enjoyed women's baseball in Giroux in her younger days, and later she took up curling, especially enjoying bonspiels. Family always came first with Rose and she always made sure that whatever she gave to one was equalled by something to another. She loved us all the same ­ lots. Until poor health slowed her down, she loved traveling across Canada, visiting her children and grandchildren. Last August was her last holiday, when she spent a week at Dauphin Beach celebrating sisterfest, a reunion of her five daughters. Rose was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion in Steinbach, Man. The funeral service was held Saturday, July 5, 2003 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Special thanks to Aunt Irene for being with her at the end. The family also wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at River East Personal Care Home for the dedication and devotion that they showered on Rose during her stay there. OLGA JANZEN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Olga Janzen, July 6, 2003 at the Vita and District Health Centre. The funeral service was held Thursday, July 10, 10 a.m., at the Nativity of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Senkiw, with Rev. Father Miron Pozniak officiating. The family would like to thank the staff at the Vita and District Health Centre and St. Boniface Hospital for their care and kindness towards our mother. "A Mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take." ABRAM BRAUN 1926 ­- 2003 Abram Braun passed away at his residence in Steinbach, Man., July 7, 2003, at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Anna, six daughters, two sons, and their families. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Thursday, July 10, 7:30 p.m., with a devotional at 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 11, 2 p.m., at the Steinbach Chortitzer Mennonite Church. Katherina Barkman 1919 - 2003 Following a stroke Katherina Barkman passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Bethesda Place Steinbach, at the age of 84 years. Katherina is survived by one sister Helen Klassen, her nieces Janice (Vern) Falk, and Martha (Herman) Koop, and many other extended family members. She was predeceased by her husband Walt in 1992; three brothers, Henry, Diedrich, and John, one sister Sarah, one brother and three sisters in childhood. Katherina enjoyed traveling, reading, and handwork. She was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Auxiliary. She and her husband Walt were also faithful workers in the Steinbach United Church. The funeral service for Katherina Barkman was held Monday, July 14, 2 p.m., at the Steinbach United Church, with interment at Heritage Cemetery. Viewing took place Sunday, July 13 at Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bethesda Place for their incredible service and care for Katherina. Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel SIMON RIEGER Peacefully, on Monday, July 14, 2003, surrounded by friends at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Simon Rieger slipped quietly to be with his Lord and Saviour at the age of 91. Simon, the third child of Sebastian and Eva Rieger, was born May 16, 1912. He lived and worked in Steinbach all his life. When Simon was 15 years old he accepted Christ as his Saviour. He was baptized and joined the EMB Church July 29, 1928 at the age of 16. The scripture verses which provided his guide to daily living were Romans 5:8-11. "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." Simon married Helen Regehr August 9, 1936. He joined his father-in-law at J.E. Regehr garage, where he was a manager until selling the business in 1961. He worked as a bookkeeper at various other businesses in Steinbach until his retirement at age 70. He leaves to mourn his children George (Kathy) Rieger, Dorothy (Craig) Harmon and Veronica (David) Klassen; grandchildren Nathan (Kendra) Rieger, Teresa Rieger, Steven (Jeni) Harmon, Ruth Anne (Tony) Brott, Paul (Kerry) Klassen and Rebecca Klassen; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Sebastian (Tien) Rieger and one sister Nora Rieger. He was predeceased by his wife Helen in 1999, his parents, two sisters and one brother. The funeral service will be held at Cornerstone Bible Church, 290 First Street, Steinbach, MB on Friday, July 18, 2003 at 2 pm. Interment at Heritage Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Rest Haven Nursing Home for all their love and care of our father these last three years.
