Helen was born on October 7, 1917 in the Tarbolton District. She is survived by her son Derwyn Irvin Lowe, daughter-in-law Erna Lowe, daughter-in-law Marlene Lowe, grandchildren Yvonne Wynnyk, Jason Lowe, Leanne Frank, Lori McKerrell, Wendy Mondoux, Jason Feakes and nine great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Annie Seens, husband George Victor Lowe, son Darryle Victor Lowe, brothers George Seens, Lesley Seens and his wife, June Seens. Helen enjoyed crafts, baking, country fair contests, playing cards and bingo and dancing. She took great pleasure in living "the farm life" and she was a member of the Harding Horticultural Society. The memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, March 28, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. with Mr. Lawrence McInnes, Brockie Donovan Funeral Celebrant, officiating. Interment will take place at the Tarbolton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Helen may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Unit 3-824-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 5B7. LESACK: Violet Mabel (Haffenden) Lesack (February 8, 1925 - March 21, 2008). Violet passed away peacefully on Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba with family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Steve, with whom she shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. Vi came to Canada in 1946 as a young English war bride. She left her entire family behind in England except for her very special niece, Sylvia Wilkes, who also came to Canada as a war bride. Vi always thought of Sylvia more as a sister than a niece. Steve and Vi lived in Brandon until 1960 when they moved to Newdale to farm. Vi enjoyed her yard and worked tirelessly doing the things she loved most, tending to her garden, freezing and canning fruits and vegetables, making all kinds of jams and preserves and always baking her own bread and buns. We will never forget her pickled beets or her homemade perogies, she was a wonderful cook. When in Newdale, Vi enjoyed curling and square dancing and had numerous friends. After retiring from the farm, she and Steve built a home in the village of Newdale and Vi worked at the Leisure Inn. In 1990, they moved back to Brandon to be closer to family. Vi belonged to the A.C.W. for many years, and later volunteered her time in the activity department at Central Park Lodge (Valleyview). For the past two years, Vi resided at Riverheights Terrace in Brandon where she loved to participate in the activities that are offered there as well as watch curling and baseball on television. Her quick sense of humour will be missed and she will be lovingly remembered by her sons Leslie (Shelley), Brian (Brenda) and Jim (Lynne) as well as her grandchildren Sherry, Carla and Pamela (Bruce Klassen), Christine (Wesley Szabo) and David, and Terra (Rob Simieritsch) and Kyle. Violet is also survived by five great grandchildren Jillian and Tyler Szabo, and Alistair, Cameron and Courtney Lesack. A funeral service to celebrate Vi’s life will be held on Thursday, March 27th, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 402-1st Street, Brandon, with Rev. John Dolloff officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Friends so wishing may make a donation in Vi’s memory to a charity of choice. Balkwill of Brandon, beloved wife of the late Mr. Edward George Balkwill, passed away at the Assiniboine Centre on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the age of 92 years. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens on Saturday, September 27th, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Brown of St. George's Anglican Church officiating. BRIDGEMAN: Edith Eleanor Bridgeman (Murray) passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on September 2nd, 2008 with her family by her side. Edith was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan to Bill and Mary Murray, on March 25th, 1919. She lived in Moosomin until 10 years of age when her mother passed away. At that time, she went to Edmonton to live with an aunt and uncle Helen and John Murray. After finishing school, Edith worked at University Hospital in Edmonton and joined the Air Force in 1942 where she took her nursing. She was stationed at Halifax, Dauphin, Rivers and Edmonton. While nursing in Edmonton, she met Lorne Bridgeman. They were married October 25th, 1945. At that time, they moved to Moline, Manitoba to farm. Edith must have been very much in love to move from Edmonton, where she had running water and electricity, to having neither of those luxuries. She worked very hard helping Lorne with everything possible on the farm, milking cows, raising and butchering chickens, feeding pigs, driving the tractor, and the list goes on and on. During this time, she had four children. In 1958, Edith and Lorne moved to Brandon where Edith nursed at the Assiniboine Hospital. She worked at the Singer Sewing Center, the Brandon Co-op cafeteria and for fifteen years at Roger Mandzuik denturist's office before retiring in 1984. Edith and Lorne enjoyed travelling in their retirement, going on several bus tours which included the Maritimes, Alaska, Branson and Nashville. They also travelled to Florida and Whitehorse. Edith enjoyed quilting, bowling, curling, floor shuffleboard, knitting and playing games with the grandchildren. Edith was a member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Lodge for 25 years. In 1998, Edith was diagnosed with macular degeneration, but that didn't slow her down a bit. In 2002, Edith moved into Riverheights Terrace, after the passing of her beloved Lorne. She lived there until 2007, when her health declined following some major changes at Riverheights. At that time, Edith moved in with her daughter Diane and husband Brian. She regained her health, other than the macular degeneration and long time arthritis, and continued to be very active with her family. Edith was predeceased by her husband Lorne and her sisters, Kay, Jessie, Violet and Marie. She will be sadly missed by daughters Helen Ford (Dale) of Killarney, Diane Bergquist (Brian) of Brandon, son Harvey Bridgeman (Heather) of Brandon and daughter Rena Carnahan of Calgary, nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Edith is survived by sisters Evelyn Ayers and Eva Simpart, sisters-in-law Mary McLaughlin, Marg Bridgeman, Ethel English, Janie Bridgeman and brothers-in-law Earl Bridgeman (Evelyn) and Arnold Bridgeman (Greta) and numerous nieces and nephews. Edith's friendly, loving spirit will be greatly missed, we will cherish the memories. The Funeral Service will be held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood officiating. CHAPMAN: Shirley Mae Chapman, of Belfield Farm, Brandon, Manitoba, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully, at the Assiniboine Centre on Sunday, June 25, 2006. Shirley was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 26, 1927, to the late Jack and Flora Moulton. As a young lady, she served as the executive secretary to the Admiral of the Royal Canadian Navy. On July 3, 1976, in Brandon, she married a wonderful person, Robert S. Chapman, and embraced the rural community when she relocated to Belfield Farm by Kirkham's Bridge. There, Shirley was an active member of a caring group of people dedicated to better living through healthy and nutritional foods which blended well with her joy of cooking and gardening. Her cookie jar was always full. Being a cat lover all her life, the farm also provided an ample supply of furry friends. During her later years she experienced respiratory problems which limited her movement and ability to speak. This didn't stop her as she acquired a computer, discovered the Internet and found a communication path to her family and friends through the use of email. Even when reading became difficult, she found a way to read by getting large print books. Her spirit remained undaunted and shone through in spite of her limitations. Shirley will live on in memory through her husband, Robert S. Chapman; their children, John T. Chapman, his wife Karean, their daughters Mikayla Shae, and Shayna Brooke of Saratoga, California; Rob Chapman, his wife Alida, their three children, Amanda, Kevin, and Marissa of Edmonton, Alberta; Susan Linto, her husband Terry, their sons Ross and Ryan of Brandon, Manitoba; her sister, Carol Von Syberg of Halifax, Nova Scotia; her nephews and nieces in Halifax, Nova Scotia; and her two cats Cindy and Tommy. Shirley was predeceased by her brother Dick Moulton. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of the Assiniboine Centre and ICU, for all of their loving care and support over the years. Leadbeater passed away at his residence, Dinsdale Personal Care Home, on Monday, January 21, 2008 at the age of 93 years. Born and raised in Bunclody, Manitoba, Gordon left school at an early age to start his working life on area farms. He eventually moved to Brandon where he met his bride to be, Catherine Siesling. Gordon was a volunteer in the Canadian Forces and served in England and Italy. At the end of WWII, he returned to Brandon where he married Catherine and they raised their family of three children. Gordon worked for a number of companies in Brandon before joining the City of Brandon Water Works Dept. in 1958. He retired in 1979. In retirement, Gordon continued to work hard at the things he loved; doing improvements to their lake property, working in the garden and building and repairing anything that need fixing. He was active in the Legion, Branch 247, the Centennial Club and was a founding member and helped to build the Riverview Curling Club. Gordon is survived by his wife Catherine, son Dan and daughters Lynda (Young) and Cathy (Affleck), seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father Edgar and mother Julia, sister Janet (Latcham) and brother Clarence Bradbrook. A Memorial Service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, January 24, 2008 with Major Winnie Perrin of the Salvation Army officiating. Interment will take place at the Brandon Cemetery, Veterans’ Section at a later date. LEENSBAK: It is with great sadness that Miley and Kyle announce the passing of their Mum, Dianne Leensbak at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon on December 17, 2007 after a brief battle with cancer. Dianne was predeceased by her father Lloyd Halliday. She leaves to mourn her, her Mother Merna Halliday, daughter Miley Jowett (Andy), son Kyle Leensbak (Tammie), grandchildren Stephen and Ethan Jowett, and Logan and Taveon Leensbak, her brother Rande and nephew Jack. She also leaves behind many family members and friends that will miss her deeply. Dianne was born in Vancouver BC to Lloyd and Merna Halliday, the eldest of two children. She grew up on Vancouver Island, and would refer to Nanaimo as home. Dianne married in 1963. In 1972 Dianne bravely decided to close a rather difficult chapter of her life and she moved with Miley to Vista Manitoba to start over. Kyle was born that same year. Dianne started over with next to nothing, working hard to make a new and better life for her children. She went back to school and eventually moved her little family to Brandon in 1980. It was there that she settled into her job as a social services case counselor with the City of Brandon. After Dianne retired she was looking forward to a quiet life, puttering in her garden, pondering life’s little mysteries and plotting her return to her favorite province. Dianne was a fun, entertaining, and unique person. She was a loving mum who did the very best she could for her family. Anyone who counted her amongst their friends were lucky indeed. She had an endless curiosity about people and life, interested in everything and willing to listen to the stories people had to tell. She could be counted on to offer advice, sympathy or set you straight, depending on the situation. She was full of ideas and had a creative side even though she did not think so. She was far kinder than she gave herself credit for, and was supportive when you needed her. She had an impish sense of humour, and was a master of the sarcastic remark, firm about her likes and dislikes and did not bend to popular opinion. For all she had been through in her life she could be charmingly naïve at times. She was truly one of a kind. In lieu of flowers, those who wish can donate to the Humane Society. In keeping with Dianne’s wishes there will be no funeral service. A memorial will take place at a later date. "What a beautiful difference one single life made" LEBID: Caroline Lebid of Brandon, beloved mother of Mildred Hykawy and Pat MacAulay, passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon on Friday, March 13, 2009 at the age of 91 years. Caroline was born to Alex and Maria Galan on October 17, 1917 in the R.M. of Strathclair, Manitoba. She was raised on a farm with two older brothers, Mike and Steve, and two younger brothers, Peter and Harry. Caroline was raised in Wisla and attended school there until grade nine. She attended church at Dolyny. She married John Lebid in 1937 and they farmed at Seech until 1955. They moved to Oak River where she worked at the egg grading station for about ten years. Caroline then went on to work at both the Rivers and Shilo Army Bases. She retired and moved to Brandon in 1989. Caroline belonged to the Ukrainian Catholic Church at Seech, Rivers and St. Mary’s in Brandon. She enjoyed her time curling at the Oak River Curling Club, as well as gardening, crocheting, knitting, lawn bowling and watching hockey, baseball and soccer. Caroline is survived by her first daughter Mildred Hykawy, second daughter Pat MacAulay and husband Ron; two grandchildren, Richard and wife Valerie Hykawy and Aaron MacAulay; two great-grandchildren Richard and Angelica Hykawy. She was predeceased by her parents Alex and Maria Galan, husband John in 1992 and all four of her brothers, Mike, Steve, Peter and Harry. Prayers will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, Brandon on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Father Michael Tkachuk as Celebrant and Stella Fedeniuk as Cantor. The Cross Bearer will be Richard Hykawy Jr. Active Pallbearers will be: Russell Maduke, Richard Hykawy, Ron MacAulay, Eddie Pastershank, Aaron MacAulay and Nelson Baranyk. Honorary Pallbearers will be Melvin Maduke and Ted Maduke. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Carol may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation "Assiniboine Centre", 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3. LONGMUIR: Winnifred Longmuir passed away at the Riverdale Personal Care Home, December 11, 2008 at the age of 75 years. Winnie married Donald on October 8, 1955 and farmed in the McConnell District. Raising three boys and teaching Sunday School kept her busy. After selling the farm, they retired in Rivers. Here, Winnie worked at the Personal Care Home as a Nurse’s Aide. She was predeceased by husband Donald; son Gordon and an infant daughter; sisters Myrtle, Wilma and brother James. She is survived by sons Doug (Helen) and Ed (Cammie); seven grandchildren: Shellbea, Houston, Dallas, Sarrah, Wylee, Tanner and Tyler; great grandchildren Hailey and Marshall. She is also survived by brother Bruce and sisters Isabelle and Betty and many nieces and nephews. Up until her death she kept busy with family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held at Rivers United Church on Friday, December 19, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Glenna Beauchamp officiating. Interment at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Brandon will follow after the luncheon. Family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to doctors and nursing staff that cared for Winnie during her brief illness. CORNELL: Lois Catherine Cornell (née Rae), beloved wife of Bob, passed away peacefully with family by her side, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at the age of 67 years. Lois was born on July 22, 1938 at Arcola, Saskatchewan. She spent her early years in Arcola and Napinka, Manitoba. She met her husband, Bob Cornell, in 1957 in Melita, Manitoba. They were married on May 31, 1958. Lois worked for the Royal Bank until she and Bob started their family. She was a member of the Kinettes (Melita and Virden) and was active in the Brandon Curling Club. She shared many fun times with her "travelling" curling team: Lois-Skip, Opal-3rd, Judy-2nd, Beth-Lead and Gramma (Reita)-broom girl. Together, Lois and Bob enjoyed good times travelling and socializing with the Molson Pioneer Old Timers Hockey Team. Lois loved the game of golf and she was active on the Executive of the Clear Lake Ladies Golf Club. She also took great pleasure in caddying for Bob during the Tamarack at Clear Lake. Lois was a member of the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Marco Island, Florida, where she was proud to be a two-time champion of the "9 Holers." Lois had several passions – she was a big fan of the Brandon Wheat Kings. She loved a good card game, especially when she beat Bob. She enjoyed cross-stitching, aquasizes and walking along the beach in Florida. She took great pride in her flowers and yard at Clear Lake, and she delighted in watching her young grandchildren play in their special playhouse. She also enjoyed watching her older grandsons playing golf and hockey. Lois is lovingly remembered by her husband Bob; son Ron (Holly) and their children Duncan and Aidan; daughter Kathy (Brad) Mueller and their children Braeden and Tyler; daughter Nancy (Jayson) Uhl and their daughter Bobbi Rae; sisters and brothers: John (Freda) Rae, Marion (Fred) White, Bill (Joan) Rae and Donna Meadows (Gary). Lois was predeceased by her parents, James and Esther Rae, and by her nephew, Glen Meadows. A Celebration of Lois’ Life will be held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Paul Sakasov of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church officiating. A private family interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. CANCADE: It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Joseph Peter Cancade on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at the age of 94. Dad was born in Finley, MB in 1912 and was the youngest of eight children born to Regis and Marie Cancade. He attended school at Grand Clairiere, Virden and Belleview, MB. At the early age of 14, Dad decided he preferred working full-time with his brother Pete, than in continuing with school. With his God given mechanical ability, he began working in the shop, learning to repair Model T cars, and eventually expanding his interest to fixing and working with all things mechanical. On September 14, 1939, Dad married Bertha and together they built their first home in Belleview. By this time, his brother Pete decided that Dad was essential to the growth of the business and made him a partner. Dad always appreciated the confidence that his brother Pete had shown him. In 1946, they moved the business, Cancade Brothers Ltd. to Brandon, MB. Later, the business was renamed Cancade & Co., which continues to manufacture truck bodies and accessories today. Dad loved making and fixing all types of machinery, both for his business and for others who would come to him with special problems. His amazing problem solving ability was sought out by his own children in business or in home situations. It is in this way that Dad showed his deep love for his family. Dad also extended his charity to the community, particularly to St. Augustine’s Church where he joined the Knights of Columbus and was honored to become a lifetime member. Dad will be greatly missed by his children, Anita Armstrong, Judy, Edward (Sue), Raymond (Wanda Nadjiwon), Francis and special friend Teresa Henderson and Gisele McLachlan; his grandchildren: Randy (Kahori) Armstrong, Kevin (Kristin) Armstrong, Melanie and Jeffrey Cancade, Nonnie (Caroline), Randa, Breanne, Charity, Melody and Sheldon Cancade, Erin, Julie and Steven Cancade, Christopher and Jason McLachlan as well as great grandchildren. Many friends, nephews and nieces will also miss his presence particularly Suzie and Paul (Yvette) Cancade who have been part of our close family network in Brandon. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Regis & Marie Cancade, all his brothers and sisters, his son, Arthur and grandson, Arthur. Prayers and the Mass of Christian Burial were held at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, Brandon, MB on June 21 and June 22 respectively. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Paul Cancade, Ralph Redfern, Pete Ricoine, Jeffrey Cancade, Christopher and Jason McLachlan. Honorary pallbearers were Pete Bodin and Sing Oun.
