Alexander J. "Alex" Thibodeau
THIBODEAU - the death of Alexander J. "Alex" Thibodeau of 325 Main St. occurred unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, August 31, 2007. Mr. Thibodeau was born in Saint John, a son of Alyre and Jacklyn (Malley) Thibodeau. He had been employed at Your Sub Shop and was an avid drawer. Besides his parents he is survived by his brother, Edward Jules Thibodeau (Elva) of Saint John; his sister, Yvette Thibodeau of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews.
Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Service will be held in Fitzpatrick's Chapel on Thursday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Eleanor G. Hughes
HUGHES - the death of Eleanor G. Hughes of 32 Riverdale Drive, Hampton, wife of T. David Hughes, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 1, 2007. Mrs. Hughes was born in Sussex, a daughter of the late Bernard and Gertrude (Long) O'Connor. She was co - owner of Hughes Home Construction and had been a lifelong devoted Catholic. She was predeceased by a brother, Paul O'Connor; and a sister, Yvonne Simkins. Besides her husband, she is survived by her son, Matthew Hughes (Andrea) of Quispamsis; her daughter, Monica Hughes of Quispamsis; her brother, Joseph O'Connor of Hamilton, Ont.; three sisters, Imelda O'Connor of Saint John, Anne O'Connor of Moncton, and Elizabeth Campbell of Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews.
Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday morning at twelve o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Edith May Malley
MALLEY - the death of Edith May Malley of 19 Kingfisher Rd., wife of Francis J. Malley, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, September 16, 2007. Mrs. Malley was born in Saint John, a daughter of Josephine (McNulty) Hartling, and the late Orman Hartling.
She had been an avid bowler. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Madison and Eric Grondine. Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by one son, Kevin (Corinne) Malley of Saint John; one daughter, Shelley Grondine (Mike) of Quispamsis; two brothers, Rickey Hartling (Sharon) of Saint John, and Orman Hartling (Linda) of Belleville, Ont.; one sister, Wendy Hartling of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews
By request of the family, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
Leo J. McCluskey
McCLUSKEY - the death of Leo J. McCluskey of 299 Gilbert St. occurred at St. Joseph's Hospital on Friday, September 21, 2007. Mr. McCluskey was born in Saint John, a son of the late Patrick and Jean (Rae) McCluskey.
He had served overseas with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 53. He retired as Superintendent in the Works and Engineering Dept. of the City of Saint john in 1979 after 35 years of service. He had been National 1st Vice - president of C.U.P.E. in the 1960's. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Ellen Pike; and a daughter, Mary Ellen Denton. He is survived by two sons, Francis of North Bay, Ont., and Patrick (Dianne) of Saint John; one daughter, Veronica Harvey (Donald) of Quispamsis; one brother, Melville (Shirley) of Saint John; two sisters, Madeline O'Hara, and Jean Vaughan, both of Saint John; seven grandchildren; 14 great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
By family request, there will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday at 12:05 P.M. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. P. Morton "Mort" Grover
1931 - 2007
GROVER - it is with great sadness that we announce the death of P. Morton "Mort" Grover of Mount Hebron, N.B. at St. Joseph's Hospital, Saint John, on Monday, October 15, 2007. Mort was born in Kentville, N.S., on May 14, 1931, a son of the late Percy and Nellie (Morton) Grover. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Ewing) of Mount Hebron; son Brian (Pamela) of Moncton; and daughters Kim of Gainesville, Florida, and Susan Hill (Jamie) of Mount Hebron. He is also survived by his sisters Emily Bigelow of Kentville, and Shirley Stewart of Vancouver; brothers Harold (Freda) of Lakeville, N.S., and Dr. Downey (Carol) of Avonport, N.S.; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
P. Morton "Mort" Grover
Mort served with the R.C.M.P. from June 1950 retiring as a Staff Sergeant in September 1977. After retirement he managed the Internal Audit Dept. of Irving Oil in Saint John and worked for some time with the Federal Business Development Bank. Mort spent his last years enjoying life and working with the horses on the farm in Mount Hebron.
Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Lakeville, N.S. at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society; St. Joseph's Hospital Cam Unit; or a charity of the donor's choice.
Sister Mary A. J. Callahan
CALLAHAN - the death of Sister Mary A. J. Callahan (Sr. M. Francis Clare) occurred at Ruth Ross Residence on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Sister was born in Woodstock, N.B., a daughter of the late Daniel and Elva(Sharkey) Callahan.
She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on May 24, 1940. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick and an M.S. in Education from Fordham University in New York. Sister Callahan taught at St. Peter's Girls' School, Holy Trinity School, St. Patrick's School, and St.
Vincent's Girls' High School in Saint John. For three years during her teaching time at St. Vincent's she also served as Guidance Counsellor.
Following early retirement due to ill health, Sister Callahan served as a tutor and mentor for many individuals, both children and adults, in Edmonton, Alberta, and Saint John. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Imogene Goode (Harry). Sister is survived by several cousins.
Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Evening Vigil Service will be held on Monday evening at seven o'clock. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Chapel on Tuesday morning at ten o'clock.
Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Edward L. MacKenney
MacKENNEY - the death of Edward L. MacKenney of 30 Sussex Drive, husband of Alta (Rideout) MacKenney, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, October 21, 2007. Mr. MacKenney was born in Saint John, a son of the late Cornelius and Mary C. (Ryan) MacKenney. He was employed in the food - service industry all his life and had owned and operated Mac's Meat Market for many years. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He was predeceased by three brothers, Malcolm r., George C., and J. Calvin MacKenney. He is survived by one brother, Donald MacKenney of Saint John; two sisters, Florence Lawrence of Calgary, and Lois Slattery of Saint John; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Memorial Service will be held at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., on Thursday afternoon at three o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
FR. THOMAS O'BRIEN, C.S.s.R.
1904 - 2007
O'BRIEN, C.S.s.R., FR. THOMAS - the death of Redemptorist Father Thomas Stephen O'Brien occurred at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, on Tuesday, October 23, 2007. He was in his 104th year. At the time of his death, after a long life of faith and service to the people of God, Father O'Brien was residing with the Redemptorist Community at St. Patrick's Church, Toronto. Born in Saint John on February 19, 1904, he was a son of the late John V. and Mary Ann (Bradley) O'Brien. Educated at St. Malachy's', St. Vincent's, and Saint John High School, graduating in 1923. After spending some time as a butcher at the Saint John City Market, he continued his studies at St. Mary's College, Brockville, Ont., and St. Alphonsus Seminary, Woodstock, Ont. He made his profession as a Redemptorist pm August 2, 1929 while in Novitiate at St. Peter's in Saint John , and was ordained on June 17, 1934 in Woodstock by Bishop John Thomas Kidd. A native son of St. John the Baptist Parish, in what he always referred to as Lower Cove, he celebrated his first Mass there.
In various capacities throughout the years of his ministry Father O'Brien served in St. Joseph's Parish (Moose Jaw); as an RCAF Chaplain (Western B.S. and Alb.); Second Novitiate (Woodstock); St. Patrick's Parish (Quebec City); as Burser (Brockville); Holy Redeemer Parish (Sudbury); as Chaplain to the Congregation ans Archivist (Toronto); and at St. Peter's Parish/St. Bridget's Mission, the former during the sixties and the latter for the final years of his active ministry from 1972 through 1997. Father O'Brien was the chief catalyst for the growth which took place at his beloved St. Bridget's and he took great pride in the personal, professional, and above all spiritual accomplishments and milestones of his flock at "The Grove". A tremendous supporter of the arts in Saint John, Father Tom relished classical music and those special evenings at the Imperial Theatre as a patron of Symphony NB, the Saint John Symphony, and Opera New Brunswick. As the last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by brothers, John L., Joseph S., Dr. James B., Bradley S., and Francis G.; sisters, Irene A. Carney, M. Kathleen O'Brien, M. Evelyn Melliday, Mary A. Matthews, and Ellen T. Maxwell; nephews, John C. O'Brien (Clara)and and John C. Matthews; and great - nephew, Stephen M. Maxwell. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families along with his Redemptorist Confreres in the Edmonton - Toronto Province and beyond.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church on Monday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will follow immediately in the Calvary Redemptorist Community Cemetery on the grounds of St. Peter's. Frances Patricia "Fran" Flynn
FLYNN - Frances Patricia "Fran" Flynn, of 14 King Sq. South, widow of Willis Howard Flynn, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Gertrude (McAllister) Shiels. Fran was a long time parishioner of the Cathedral.
She is survived by two sons, Sean R.(Leisa) Flynn, of Saint John, Kevin G.(Debbie) Flynn of Saskatoon Sask.,two daughters Catherine A.(Michael) Brun and Carolyn P. Flynn, both of Saint John, one brother Jack Shiels, of Hamilton, Ont., seven grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Brun, Kathleen, Olivia, Connor, Kylie Flynn, and Nathaniel Jamieson - Flynn, several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Frans caregiver, Mary Bradbin and Family, for all their kindness.
