New Democrat MLA, Saskatoon Nutana
Pat Atkinson was born in Biggar. She graduated from Walter Murray Collegiate in Saskatoon. Pat received a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Honours) and a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Saskatchewan. After graduating from University Ms. Atkinson worked for the Saskatoon Region Community College, the National Farmers Union and the Provincial Department of Consumer and Commercial Affairs. Prior to her election to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1986, Ms. Atkinson was principal andteacher-therapist of the Radius Community Education Centre in Saskatoon.
Ms. Atkinson is an active member of her community. She was a member of the Nutana Neighbour to Neighbour Program, a past Vice-President of the Saskatoon Community Clinic, and a Founding Director of the Co-operative Housing Association of Saskatchewan. As well, she is a former representative to the Canadian Daycare Advocacy Association. She is a member of many community organizations.
She was first elected to the Legislature in 1986 and while in Opposition, served as Critic for Health, Education, and Privatization. Ms. Atkinson was re-elected in the 1991 general election, representing the Saskatoon Broadway Constituency. She was again re-elected in 1995, now representing the Saskatoon Nutana Constituency. Pat Atkinson was first appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Seniors. On September 20, 1993, she was appointed Minister of Education, Training, and Employment and Minister Responsible for New Careers Corporation and Saskatchewan Communications Network. On November 22, 1995, she was once again appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Education.
