Gardom, Hon. Garde Basil
Lieutenant Governor of the Province of British Columbia
Hon. Garde Gardom, Q.C., KStJ., B.A., LL.B. was born in Banff, Alberta on July 17, 1924, the son Basil and Gabrielle Gwladys (Bell) Gardom. He was educated at the University of British Columbia where he obtained his B.A. and LL.B.
On February 11, 1956 he married Theresa Helen Eileen Mackenzie. They have children Kim, Karen, Edward, Brione and Brita.
On April 21, 1995 sworn in as Lieutenant Governor for the Province of British Columbia.
Mr. Gardom was called to the Bar of B.C. in 1949; elected MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey in 1966 and reelected in 1969, 1972, 1975, 1979 and 1983. Government House Leader 1977-86. Attorney General in the Social Credit Government from 1975-79; Minister of Intergovernmental Relations 1979-86; Chairman of the Constitution Committee and the Legislation Committee 1975-86; member of the Treasury Board and Planning and Priorities Committee 1983-86; Minister Responsible for Official Visits to Expo86; Policy Consulting Office of the Premier 1986-87. Agent General for British Columbia in the U.K. and Western Europe 1987-92.
Director of the Crown Life Insurance Co. 1992-95; Member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Vancouver Bar Association since 1949. B.C. Sports Hall of Fame; Phi Delta Theta 1943.
Member of the Anglican Church.
Recreations include fishing, racquet sports, history, riding. Clubs: Union Club of B.C., Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club, and the Royal Overseas.
