Evans, Hon. Iris
Progressive Conservative MLA, Sherwood Park
Iris Evans was first elected Member of the Legislature for the Constituency of Sherwood Park on March 11, 1997. She was appointed and sworn in as Minister of Municipal Affairs, by the Honourable Lieutenant - Governor of Alberta, Bud Olson at Government House, on March 25, 1997.
Since becoming Minister of Municipal Affairs, she has given a keynote address to the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties; directed the audit of CKUA Radio and the formation of its new board; and introduced several amending pieces of legislation during the 1997 Spring sitting of the Legislature.
Iris' strong ability to build consensus is derived largely from her business consulting background and her eighteen years experience as a School Board Trustee and as President, Councillor and ultimately Reeve of Strathcona County.
Iris Evans was born December 31, 1941 in Calgary, Alberta. A daughter of educators, she is a former registered nurse, who graduated with distinction as the Valedictorian of the 1963 Holy Cross Hospital nursing class. She is also qualified as a piano teacher and taught music at the Regional Conservatory in Calgary.
Over the years, Iris has been a parent and a very active member in a number of local government, community and business endeavors including: Director, Edmonton Regional Airport Authority; Board of Governors, Grant MacEwan Community College; Member of Senate, University of Alberta; Former Chair, Strathcona County School Board; President and Executive Member, Alberta School Trustees Association (now ASBA) 1981; Medical Health Advisory Committee; Co-Chair, Municipality and School Boards Alternative Tax Strategy Volunteer; Chairman, 1996 Alberta Science and Technology Awards Gala; Director, Alberta Progressive Conservative Association, Sherwood Park; Former Vice-President, Sherwood Park Minor Hockey; Founding Member, Hockey Moms Sherwood Park (1976). Personal and professional: Member Mount Olivet Lutheran Church; President of her own consulting firm, You First Inc.
Iris is the parent of three sons, Kevin, Trent and Darren, daughter-in-laws, Vivian, Laurel and Lori. She has three grandchildren, Justin, Jarret and Madison. She resides in her family home, in Sherwood Park.
