Fischer, Hon. Robert
Progressive Conservative MLA, Wainwright
Robert "Butch" Fischer was born, raised and educated in Irma, Alberta. He is married and has five children and fifteen grandchildren.
Mr. Fischer has owned and operated Pleasant View Farms Limited since 1957. He also has worked for the Department of Highways.
Mr. Fischer's community involvement has included serving as president of the Irma Gold Club, as well as a director of the Irma Agricultural Society. He has served as chair of the United Church Board and is a member of the Elks. Mr. Fischer also has been involved in sports, coaching minor hockey and playing on a local recreational team.
Robert Fischer was first elected to the Alberta Legislature as MLA for Wainwright in 1982. He was re-elected in 1986, 1989, 1993 and 1997.
Mr. Fischer was appointed Minister of Public Works, Supply and Services on December 21, 1994, and then appointed Minister of Transportation and Utilities on May 31, 1996. After the March 11, 1997, election, he was appointed Chair of the Standing Policy Committee for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Since 1989, Mr. Fischer has served as a Member of the Select Standing Committee of the Alberta Heritage Savings and Trust Act, and as a Director on the Syncrude Board. He also represents the Alberta Government on the Northlands Park Board of Directors. In addition to serving on various Caucus committees, Mr. Fischer's past appointments have included: Member of the Standing Policy Committee on Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Member of the Agenda and Priorities Committee; Chair of the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing; and Legislative Secretary to the Premier Responsible for Tourism.
